>Try to keep things /vr/ related: Focus should be on 5th Gen (+Dreamcast) games on back. Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.
>Produce OC! Bust out your camera and take photos of your CRTs displaying all sorts of games, featuring all sorts of tubes, using all sorts of signals. Getting good shots can be hard, but if you take enough, at least a few will turn out alright. Tips'n'Tricks™ coming soon.
>Try and give as much information as possible when asking for info on a specific set, or troubleshooting an issue to expedite and help you may receive. As always, Google is your friend and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either; Seriously, there's literally 6 years of backlog at this point.
>Share appreciation for other's choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. Always remember to show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

Thanks, me too. The general consensus among amateur CRT communities online is that you should never try to remove a scratch on a tube because you're only going to make it worse, but that doesn't sit quite right with me. I could see that being true if there's a decent chunk of glass missing, but I'm confident that hairline scratches (small enough that you can't feel them with your fingernail) are fixable. I get the feeling that this opinion only came about because people tend to half-ass things, and it's when you half-ass things that mistakes happen. That's why I'm trying to do everything right as far as securing it, using CeO2 from a good source, using a proper rotary buffer instead of a foam drill attachment, etc.

If it all goes well, the next hardest part will be finding a new computer desk large (and deep) enough to accommodate it.

>> No.5695101

>>5695095
i think a big reason people will tell you not to do this is because pc monitors and pro monitors have anti-glare coatings or a film. in that case you'd not want to do it unless you plan to polish the entire coating off or just remove the film. but in the case of an average tv i can't see why polishing the glass wouldn't work.

try to take a video or something if you can.

In a CRT Projector there are three separate small CRTs which each project a red, green, or blue image. These CRTs have a very high cd/m2 (nits brightness) rating compared to your average CRT and you should not look directly at one while it is in operation without strong sunglasses.

There are also informal DIY CRT projectors which use fresnel lenses taken from overhead projectors to enlarge the image. These have a drawback of having a very low lumen rating because only the light from the normal television is being scattered across a much larger area. They are also very hazy and only have good focus in the center of the image. And they are hard to set up and focus.

But... what would happen if one took one of the lenses from one of the best CRT projectors ever made, such as the 9" Barco units, and paired it up with a 9" color CRT monitor instead of the dedicated projector CRT?

The first thing I would expect is a massive loss in luminosity. BUT fresnel lens projectors have achieved acceptable brightness levels in completely darkened rooms. I would expect the light transmission rating of a pro lens to color CRT mating would be much better than the average fresnel lens set-up.

I -think- this is something here. I don't see any particular reason why it should not work, and if it does work it would be a way to have a *huge* (as in 40-60" before brightness becomes unacceptable even in a dark room) CRT which is actually somewhat portable, or at least much easier to get into smaller spaces. And it would have one massive advantage over traditional CRT projectors: no need for convergence.

>But... what would happen if one took one of the lenses from one of the best CRT projectors ever made, such as the 9" Barco units, and paired it up with a 9" color CRT monitor instead of the dedicated projector CRT?

you'd have an sd projector that's super dark. keep in mind you need to flip and reverse the image.

Touch the case, does it stop? If so, you need a very soft foam rubber washer between where the flyback screws to the case. I ended up using a toilet bowl to tank seal cut to size. I'm guessing it's harmonic resonance amplified by the shape of the case. I had this happen on a trinitron, forget the model.

It's something meant for cleaning glass stove tops, I don't remember what brand I used. It does a good job, my advice is just to ONLY use it to remove the coating and then stop. My mistake was trying to continue using it to polish out a single hairline scratch and I ended up with a bunch of microscratches -- I thought it was finer than it was. 90% of the screen looked great afterwards, though. Again, just don't rub in any location for longer than it takes to just get the coating off.
I can check what brand it was when I get home, if you like.
Also, to the anon that asked to see results: my friend that owns the rotary buffer wasn't feeling well this morning, so we'll probably have to postpone it. Anyway, whenever it ends up happening, I'll post here.

Maybe for the exorbitant prices they go for now but they're honestly great CRTs. Not only the best BVMs or PVMs either, most of them shits on 95% of consumer TVs in terms of image quality. The only drawback except the price is that they tend to be small, so they're typically no good for setups in big rooms. If you can find one for a reasonable price and don't need everything in a big room you shouldn't pass it up.

>>5695332
>upscaling with OSSC on a 31khz PC CRT monitor rather than displaying the original resolution natively on a SD PVM/BVM
>implying PC CRT monitors are as good as PVMs
PVMs didn't cost an arm and a leg for nothing. I bought one run of the mill model that last was serviced in 2004. It has many hours on it but still has an excellent picture and I haven't had to do any maintenance. All consumer CRT TVs I've had bit the dust after some years of use. I have a run of the mill PC CRT monitor too and while it does work it isn't even close in terms of image quality. The PVM is a workhorse even after 15 years since the last service.

Well chums, I got my new home cinema set up going.

Gear
>Epson Powerlite 730c
>100" pull-up projection screen - matte white 1.1 gain

Very sharp, but I have to tell you the contrast is NOT EVEN CLOSE to the image that I got with my NEC CRT projector on my shitty improvised screen without any kind of controlled lighting. The NEC absolutely blew it away, even though I had trouble getting convergence and focus set up correctly (and the truth be told I know that I was just trying to use it from too close of a throw distance and too high a resolution expectation).

Of course, I knew this would happen from the very beginning since this is just an old 400:1 contrast ratio LCD projector. 1900 ANSI lumens and 2:1 zoom range so that makes it pretty flexible to set up anywhere.

BUT I don't plan on using it much because the contrast ratio is just everything.

You guys want to be blown away and you have the space I recommend going and getting one of those goliaths from NEC or Sony, but know what you are getting into.

No photos because it is entirely pointless. Please accept this image of Britney Spears instead.

Hi, /CRT/, I need advice. The CRT TV I have (pic related) is the same or similar to this anon, and I want to connect it to my PC for emulation. It has Component, S-Video, and Composite inputs. My GPU is an R9 380X (HDMI, DP, DVI-D, and DVI-I outputs) that apparently supports CRT Emudriver.

With the inputs/outputs that I have to work with, does anyone know exactly what I'd need to buy to connect my PC to my CRT TV? A converter? Just a cable?

If it's really not worth it or is too much of a headache, then I guess I'll just give up on the idea. I know the Wii is an alternative, but it seems a little more limited than I'd like. I'll have to go with it if I have no choice though.

After it is all said and done, autists sperg about the Wii not running PSX/Saturn. To each their own. A computer will run Emulation better than a wii/pi any day of the week however.

I use a wii. Because I already had one, and only was interested in quality 8-16 bit emulation directly to my CRT tv. It is only a bonus that there is VC games including the N64. This means that the Wii is capable of playing games from every generation of Nintendo in some fashion or another. After all costs are calculated, a Wii & Pi will cost about the same, even if you buy used.

Would I use a Pi for gaming emulation? Fuck no. I have used a few of them in the past, and was not impressed at all. However, if someone uses a Pi and it works for them, that is great.

1600x1200 or 1920x1080 is plenty enough. The big obstacle is the loss in overall brightness and the blurriness that is inherent to lower-quality LCD monitors. Contrast ratio doesn't actually matter as much as it is often talked about when it comes to video games. 1000:1 is fine.

Hello friends,

so I spend the best part of today lugging this beauty around, it's a CVM-1850. I had started to believe this model did not even exist as I had only ever seen the smaller 13 inch and larger 22 inch variants for sale.

The unit itself is in pretty good condition and still functional, the geometry is mostly fine - which is pretty amazing for a 42 year old TV which has apparently never been recapped.

However, when testing it, I couldn't get an NTSC signal to work in color, it only showed up in b/w. PAL worked fine. I know for a fact that this model supports NTSC, it says so in the original manual I got with it and even has a "hue" dial hidden behind one of the little doors.

What could be the problem here? Could it be a problem with the built-in signal auto-detection and switching? Or something with the NTSC circuitry itself? How should I proceed?

YPbPr aka component video is a type of RGB, and the results are visually indistinguishable in most cases.

Then there are the numerous RGB CGA monitors floating about that while not being televisions, still support 15khz video. And of course the famous production monitors from Sony, JVC, Mitsubishi, and NEC.

Arcade monitors were RGB for the most part.

All TVs with SCART were mandated to accept RGB on at least one of the connections. This was until 2015, so even LCDs with SCART accept 15KHz RGBS.

They are CGA monitors, but you don't have to use CGA with them. You can feed them plain 15khz RGB and it will work (sometimes).

And really I was thinking of monitors like the Commodore 1084 which are not CGA monitors, but instead designated "Color Monitor". That is my mistake.

>You can feed them plain 15khz RGB and it will work (sometimes).
No, it won't work, since "plain 15KHz RGB" uses a composite signal and CGA has separate H/V sync. Some cheaper monitors with improper circuitry feed the TTL signals straight into the RGB amps, those can sort of work if you use a sync separator. But proper CGA monitors (See: IBM 5153) won't work at all when fed such a signal, even with separate sync.
>And really I was thinking of monitors like the Commodore 1084
Which doesn't have a TV tuner, and thus isn't a TV set. Yes, you could plug a TV tuner into it, but that still doesn't make it a TV.
By the way, a better example would be the Amstrad CTM-664, which can take both RGBIS TTL and RGBS signals by tying the intensity pin to 5V, albeit it can't take CGA without a sync mixer. Well, and it's not American. and while we're at it, it's a piece of shit.

You just feed RGBHV into it (in 2019 most likely from a PC), no sync separator necessary.

Yeah, except these are cheaper per piece and a lot easier to work with. Cheapo cables might not even have fully populated connectors. Some of the nintendo cables don't. But do as you like.

Plus a lot of cheapo cables epoxy the entire housing so you can't work with it :/

Nice
>Max resolution of 1920x1440.
Might even be higher

I'm aware of this, but according to the specs the CVM-1850 can auto-detect and auto-switch between PAL and NTSC modes (I got the manual with it). I figured it could simply be "stuck" in PAL mode.

I've used one to do 320x240@120hz without issue.

If they were shallow I could still see continuing anyway, as from what I remember the initial scratch was somewhat deep. Polishing is usually a multi-step, multi-grit process anyway. Ah well.

Yes. They don't care about vertical refresh rate, only limit is maximum dot clock, they tell you the top res at 60Hz because that's what most normies will be doing.

I think that's actually the highest. The highest listed in the manual is 1920x1024, but 1920x1440 is the highest I can get it to go with arandr.

you could go stupid high with interlacing

>> No.5725260

monitors don't care about the resolution, mostly just the horizontal scanrate of the signal you send them.

>> No.5725456

>>5725260
Doesn't mean you'll actually gain anything by going higher though.

>> No.5725459

>>5725456
no, you're right. and at 1920x1440 you're already at a resolution that most monitors wont resolve anyways.

I tested SNES, N64, and GC with an RF cable to an LCD tv and didn’t notice any input lag.
