>Try to keep things /vr/ related: Focus should be on 5th Gen (+Dreamcast) games on back. Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.
>Produce OC! Bust out your camera and take photos of your CRTs displaying all sorts of games, featuring all sorts of tubes, using all sorts of signals. Getting good shots can be hard, but if you take enough, at least a few will turn out alright. Tips'n'Tricks™ coming soon.
>Try and give as much information as possible when asking for info on a specific set, or troubleshooting an issue to expedite and help you may receive. As always, Google is your friend and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either; Seriously, there's literally 6 years of backlog at this point.
>Share appreciation for other's choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. Always remember to show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

I picked up a Sony Trinitron KV-27FS120 for $10 in great shape. It has some geometry problems, and while I accessed the service menu and messed around I'm not confident enough to save changes. Anyone have a good guide for at least getting the picture straight?

I saw your post in the last thread too, it's a pass for me not only because it's likely on its last legs after being used for years, but it also has no RGB inputs. If you don't care about RGB you could look at Panasonic and JVC monitors, they usually at least have S-Video.

>it doesn't even have hdmi or dvi so i'd pass on it if i were you.
Toshiba introduced DVI on the 2003 models along with 720p compatibility, but that's also when they started scaling everything instead of maintaining distinct multiscan modes for 480p and 1080i. I would much rather have a 71 or 72 than a 73 for 6th gen, if not for the geometry problems (the reason I got rid of both of my HFX72s). The "X" also indicates it has a sub and sounds great, along with not being available at Costco or a non-boutique electronics shop, so the original owner probably paid $2000+ on it and hopefully would have taken appropriate care of it.

>>5679412
You want an SDTV for N64 but if you're ok with the geometry issues you get with a flat CRT, an HFX71 would be great for both Xbox (480p and 1080i) and Wii (480p). Both of those systems use component cables for progressive and HD; the DVI issue only becomes relevant for Blu-Ray, or for consoles after Wii U, PS3, and Xbox 360, which can all still use component cables.

If that's really what you mean, and you're talking about CRT HDTVs with DVI inputs, there's nothing special about them that would prevent that from working. You only want to make sure the DVI port is HDCP compliant (and on a TV it's almost sure to be).

I got a Samsung TX-R2735X for free at a garage sale a few weeks back, and finally got around to trying it out last weekend. I'm pretty impressed with it. I had an old JVC that was starting to go I think cause no matter what the picture would always be too dark, so it made any games ps2 era and up hard to play. Component PS2 looks so fucking great on this thing.

People often toss CRTs as soon as they get a scratch on them, thinking it's totally hopeless to restore them.
Despite this, I've undertaken the project of restoring a scratched Samsung Syncmaster 900IFT. This thing has some of the best colors I've ever seen on any monitor (including modern flat-panel technologies), 1600x1200 at 86Hz, and both VGA and 5-BNC inputs, so I've decided it's worth saving. When I got it, it had a damaged anti-glare coating and had spots where the brightness was significantly greater than the rest of the image. I had to use an abrasive glass cleaner to remove it, which did a good job, but I rubbed for too long in two places and created enough micro scratches to cause a moire effect. I've done my research, and to finally restore this thing to its former glory, I will be polishing it with a rotary buffer (thanks to a friend who works on cars, who will be giving me a hand with that) and a cerium oxide paste. I'm about to go to the hardware store and buy some lumber so I can build a harness-type thing to hold the monitor steady while I'm polishing it, and I'll probably get around to the actual polishing next weekend. If all goes well, I plan to make this monitor into a daily driver for years to come. Wish me luck, anons.

Are you sure the anti-glare coating isn't just a sheet of plastic bonded to the display, like on late Trinitrons and DiamondTrons? Removing such a layer on those tubes is relatively easy.
I have a 32" 16:9 Panasonic Quintrix with a scratched anti-glare layer and I think it's also the plastic film type. I'll have to get a couple of people to help me remove it, though. Great TV for watching LaserDiscs.

I've had monitors (With DiamondTron tubes mostly, though it also happened to some random Samsung with a flat shadow mask tube) that also had that kind of coating, but applied on top of the plastic sheet. I once tried to rub it off thinking it was just the coating on one of the monitors since it was also flaking off (I think it was a LaCie ElectronBlue) and then discovered it also had the plastic sheet.
