yeah I played ff7 in 1999 in my cabin in the woods. My dad beat me with his belt for playing too much inside, but I helped him chop wood and carry water (we didnt have inlaid water at that time) every day, and also wash the dishes and cut the grass. I also cleaned the roof tiles of growths and painted the terrace. He allowed me to play then anyway.

FF VII is baby's first JRPG. Western kids weren't used to long games focusing on story and characters and it certainly helped that it had at the time cutting edge graphics and presentation.

The only problem is that the story is a clusterfuck that doesn't really make any sense and half of the cast is optional. Also outside of those pointless minigames FF VII plays like a regular 2D Final Fantasy but with fancier backgrounds. The reason it made such a fuss was because westerners weren't familiar with japanese RPGs.

The fuck are you talking about? There are literally 2 previously used tunes in the entire 4-hour FF7 soundtrack. One is called "The Final Fantasy Prelude" and the other is "The Final Fantasy Theme." Both are new arrangements. I don't think any sound effects are reused.

FFVII for me. Felt much more epic, has better characters, the music is best I've heard in gaming, materia is really cool. Probably PS1's best game.

I do like OOT a lot though. For its time it gave a level of freedom in 3D we really didn't see in games at the time. It was a great adventure game with fun dungeons, memorable pretty much everything. Would say it is second best game for the console.

I loved ff7 as a preteen. I like lttp and oot thematically, but I just can't get with the gameplay of zelda games; never could. I couldn't get through ff6 either; everything about it was distasteful for me.

I've seen a LOT more people claim that oot is the greatest game ever than ff7, or any other particular game even.

They were only really considered best games of all time shortly after they came out. After that sure, they're on top of lists nobody gives a flying fuck about. Since then dozens of games that are considered by many as "best game of all time" came out. Also, many older good titles were more widely available. FFVII and OOT have both unique "atmospheres" that make them stand out. I feel both are great games and I'll never say they're not good, but they cannot be the "best games of all time".

Let's start with FFVII. The setting is kinda unique, though it merges with the fantasy setting from other previous entries. However the writing is not that good compared to even other Squaresoft RPGs of the time. The most memorable parts about it fit the first disc for the most part. The materia system is also fairly flawed, and something that I found a bit irritating (though I admit that's down to preference) is how party members aren't that unique in their abilities. I like the approach from the new threat mod and I feel that's what they should have done, make some characters more suitable than others for certain roles.

About OoT, it's more cinematic and slow than it needed to be. It's also a bit more linear than I would have liked (without sequence breaking). I understand it's a more modern Zelda game, but ALTTP at least pretended to be a bit more open.

FF9 is designed as a back-to-basics sendoff for the series with a ton of small references to the early games, but I actually recommend starting there. It's really solid, and doesn't require any prior knowledge to enjoy. The references work just as well the other way around so the visual similarities between characters and classic sprites might help you click with the earlier barebones entries. It has the most final fantasy tropes in the series and the story takes you on a ride.

One is an action-adventure game and the other is a (nearly) turn-based JRPG, so I really don't think a direct comparison is possible. But if I had to say, I guess FF7 is a better example of its genre than OoT is just because it still stands out today. OoT still a lot of fun, it's just been outdone in every way I can think of. Meanwhile, FF7 is still pretty high up there in terms of atmosphere and characters, and the Materia system is a lot of fun. The only problem is it's too fucking easy, but OoT suffers from that too.
