>hide half your game behind not getting the bad ending
>give no indication that there is more to do when the player gets the bad ending
>intentionally design your game so that players could easily miss out on half of it, leaving them wondering why the game felt so short
What did they mean by this?

>Igarashi: It’s actually 200.6%. If you uncover the entire castle it’s 100%, and the inverted castle also has 100% (plus the underground waterway part for the extra .6%). We set the normal castle completion at 100% so as to put one “endpoint” to the game’s progression. What we were thinking is that people wouldn’t defeat Dracula on their very first playthrough; we wanted them to defeat Richter once. Then, after feeling like they’d beat Richter and cleared the game, they’d decide to aim for 100% completion in the normal castle and uncover all the places they didn’t get to; in doing so they’d discover the inverted castle and feel like they’d found something special. When players defeated Richter, we wanted them to be wondering, “What happened to Death? What about all of Alucard’s stolen equipment?”

Few games treat 100% exploration as mandatory since if you're not super into it it'll make the game outstay its welcome. There should be some kind of reward though, but literally half the game's content is a bit silly.

She gives you the item that helps expose what's really going on with Richter, but doesn't say anything about the second castle. However, the fact that the room where you meet her is designed upside-down can be considered a hint.

It's not impossible to discover the solution on your own if you're observant. You get the first ring pretty early and its description should prompt you to find the second. Both rings flat out tell you what to do to get the item you need for Richter's fight.

Also consider:

>you got 2-3 games a year and played the fuck out of each
>some kid found it out and told everyone at school
>TV ads showed reverse castle bosses
>vidya magazines flat out tell you
>helpline if you're desperate

I think the funny thing here is basically that modern gamers are all about finishing shit so they can hurry on to the next title ASAP. I wouldn't be surprised if the influx of people who try to shitpost this game are people who completely didn't even get the inverted castle.

Richter-mode feels like the true sequel to Rondo. Perhaps that's what the devs originally intended, with Alucard-mode being somewhat of an icebreaker for newer players.
It always seems like people focus too much on Alucard's run and never really play the game as Richter.

If anything, Richter's mode is the "I don't give a fuck" mode. You can just brute force everything, except for the fact you don't have any way to heal.

I get the reason now why people bitch about SotN being too easy. You people abuse the fuck out of it. It's like the only kinds of games that are hard to most players these days are the ones that don't allow them to them to abuse their inner cokefiend. It's like when motherfuckers whine about FFVIII being too easy because they played cards and abused the shit out of card mod. Well no shit it was too easy. You play like a speedrunner. SotN was easy? Because you got the Shield Rod or a Crissaegrim or some other bullshit. You do realize that you don't need to use or even get those items, right?

Inverted castle is fucking kino, retards don't know what they're talking about. Classic bosses mixed with cool new ones like Beelzebub, awesome gear and new enemies everywhere. Shame they didn't add a sideways castle as well.

>> No.5458210

>>5458202
Don't blame the player for using the options given to them. Any logical human being will play in the most optimal matter, that's part of getting gud. It's one thing to abuse glitches but when you're merely using an item or ability given to you that's entirely within reason to find without guides then it's simply a poorly balanced game. Why should the player do the developer's work and figure out how to balance the game? Here's a better idea: Don't put in stupid game breaking shit.

>> No.5458213

>>5458202
Speedrunner? Everything that Richter can use to fuck the game up is readily available, you don't need to go out of your way to find anything, or think about some ass-backwards way to defeat a boss. He already has all of his tools since the beginning.

The game was designed solely for Alucard and was not balanced for Richter at all. This is an ongoing problem in all the "Metroidvanias" where you can play as the side characters.

>>5458202
By the time the average player gets into the Inverted Castle, Alucard is so overleveled that even the weakest sword obliterates most enemies. Abusing tools has nothing to do with it.

100% agree. It's a design flaw that should get no praise, be it a new or classic game, popular or not. When it's no hard to test out whether or not something can make the game too fucking easy there's no excuse, and the shield rod is just like right the fuck there, don't give me that shit.

For your first time, unguided playthrough, yeah, I'm winding up pretty strong pretty quickly. It's a game based around exploration, so when you don't know where to go, you run around the castle, and running around the castle means defeating more enemies, and defeating more enemies means you level up a lot. I'm a small bit into the inverted castle, but for the most part I feel incredibly overpowered. So far the hardest parts of the game were the Doppleganger boss or whatever it is called, and the blue Venus Weeds.
