In the same way James Bond and Indiana Jones is cool.

She's this confident badass who can get away with shooting a t-rex in the face and pull off some impossible shit, just so she get to the bottom of the mystery. And I appreciate the fact that she's using her brains to solve problems.

And on the other hand, she's not an indestructable Mary Sue. She fucks up constantly, gets captured on a daily basis, is usually outgunned and more often than not has to think her way through various hazards.

I kinda liked the scene at the very end of TR2. After running through some crazy gauntlet with no time to rest, she has to kill the fucking dragon... and afterwards is so exhausted that she passes out on the spot. That was a cute little tidbit.

After browsing through the trle archive it seems that the levels made for competitions are your safest bet, because those are made with somewhat carefully put together assets that all competitors use. I can't find any up to date guides on which levels are worth playing thlugh, and the trle.net community seems a little too generous (and judging by the look of some levels, lacking in taste) for their ratings to be a reliable indicator.

>> No.5420431

>>5420341
I find that the ones with higher ratings do tend to be better quality overall, but there's a split sort of in the community. Some really prefer the abstract puzzle solving, some really prefer the more traditionally structured, themed levels.

The entire first page of highest rated maps for Tomb Raider 3 I think are completely recommendable.

Were there any in particular that you found to be rated too generously?

After recently playing through that section, I can safely say The Deck is best level out of the entire underwater section, maybe because you spend the previous 3 FUCKING LEVELS, caught in the claustrophobic ship interior.

I absolutely LOATHE Wreck of the Maria Doria (the level). 40 Fathoms and Living Quarters are eh.

I think there's a bit of a revitalization of the series happening due to people slowly leaving the 80's nostalgia and entering the 90's nostalgia, so it could get an HD remake. Hopefully just textures though.

Unless some dedicated modder that sleeps on money decides to do it, I wouldn't count on it.
Squeenix seems to distance themselves from the old TR games for some reason - maybe they still think that this nu-Lara is the hot shit that everybody loves.

Also, I don't think that would be profitable. Such games as Core TR won't fly with the modern audience who might get an aneurysm if they won't shoot something every five seconds. And old Tomb Raider games were always more focused on platforming, puzzles and exploration.

They are legitimately fun and cozy - if you are more of a fan of puzzle platformers, rather than action shooters. Some people complain about "bizarre" tank controls, but once you figure out how they work, they are very intuitive and tight. Combat mechanics can fuck off personally, but fortunately there aren't much shootouts in the series.

I would suggest either TR 1 or TR 3 as your go-to first TR game. Unless you are here for the story - then try out TR 4. I've personally started with TR 3.
TR 1 is also a lot of fun, but can feel legitimately dated and bare-bones now, compared to other games in the series. Still worth checking out.
TR 2 is IMO a bit more action-oriented and takes a while to get going.
And TR 4 is IMO the strongest story-wise and has some most interesting puzzles.

If there were no enemies they would just be dull empty puzzle rooms. Half of the excitement comes from the combat. One of the highlights of the entire series was the T-Rex you found in the first game.

I have never, will never, never want to understand this negative attitude about the combat in the series. Aside from the hit-scanning enemies, the combat and exploration go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly.

The inferior graphics actually help Tomb Raider a lot. Most of those environments are incredibly unrealistic in the games and with improved graphics the majority of casuals are going to be looking at these environments and laugh at how unrealistic they actually are. The worse graphics make these places stand out as familiar but very strange.

Basically in short the Tomb Raider games were designed around the idea of making very video gameish games only with a female protagonist. The modern gen doesn't mesh well with this idea at all because developers and gamers are obsessed with realism completely taking over the industry. DMC5 looks very odd because of this. Vergil is supposed to be Dante's twin yet doesn't even have the same face as him now thanks to this push for realism in gaming above all and that is just one example of many in the game.

This is reinforceable based on the fact that on the back of the first game's PS1 case it literally says
-Your arsenal includes: Pistols, magnums, a shotgun and uzis
-Battle wolves, bats, bears, alligators, raptors, and even a T-Rex in your quest for the Scion

2 out of 3 of the bullet points (which are literal bullets on the case) for the game revolves around combat.

They seem to have a fine time playing shit like Fortnite.

>The modern gen doesn't mesh well with this idea at all because developers and gamers are obsessed with realism completely taking over the industry.
I think Doom 4 proved the opposite. You had incredibly unrealistic environments complete with keycards and skull-keys. I think you're applying your own brand of out-of-touchness to justify your apprehension about today's gamer's. If they marketed the game not as being some drama-driven realistic exploration game and actually what it was, it would fair a lot better.

One problem, Tomb Raider games have tank controls and are supposed to function with them in mind. They wouldn't be able to just remaster these games because too many hate tank controls. Lara is a mercenary who gets inadvertently wrapped up in grand schemes to end the world.

Happens all-throughout the series really. Tomb Raider 1, she was hired by Natla to get the Scion, then gets double-crossed and breaks in to find out what she's after, tracks down Dupont, and then things fall off the rails.

In Tomb Raider 2, she's just doing a bit of exploring on her own about the Dagger of Xian, until she happens upon Bartoli's henchmen and gets wrapped up in that mystery.

Tomb Raider 3, she's investigating the Infada stone, which happens to be an ancient alien meteorite fragment which RX Tech also happened to be after, and is hired to retrieve the rest.

In Tomb Raider 4, she's looking for an amulet and accidentally awakens a dark god, and it turns out that Von Croy is still alive, and her guide was working for him and she gets in a battle against her old tutor.

Her endeavors were never really selfless. The plot is there if you want to look for it, but it was never really her intention to deal with the individuals she becomes involved with.

Based fucking retard. They have the highest rate of fire and absolutely have the highest DPS but only in close ranges because they are inaccurate as fuck and you will miss around 10% of your shots at a distance of a little more than a jump.

I would start with 1 just to get started. All of them on STEAM or GOG work pretty well and have very easy/simple fixes for controllers.

Start with any of them that you like, just be aware of these things:
1 - Least amount of moves and weapons, mostly puzzles and exploring with action every now and then
2 - Lots of urban environments, a shit ton of action, lots of underwater segments
3 - A 50/50 mix of exploration and action, a lot more variety in puzzle types and also a hell of a lot harder than the previous two
4 - Several sections that deal with non-linear level design (IE, you will have to come back to the level later), a semi return-to-form for the series
5 - Very uneven, sort of a grab-bag experience. Generally thought to be a very good game, if uninspired and going-through-motions

Yeah, you pretty much kill more stuff in the Italy section of TR2 than the entirety of TR1.
Having said that, I prefer combat in TR1. Majority of TR1 enemies attacked at meelee or with projectiles. So it was easier to avoid them. Those assholes in TR2 keep using hitscan weapons with deceptively long range and accuracy. And dodging, sidejumping and aiming was always quite clunky in TR games, especially with multiple enemies shooting at you from every side. And Lara consistently keeps shooting at dead enemies until you tell her to stop and shoot something else. And you can fuck yourself over with a bad dodge - by accidently hitting a wall for instance - and before you regain control, Lara is riddled with bullets.

In tr1, at least earlier, enemies were down below where you would fall into if you fucked up. In tr2. they're right fucking there, half the time don't even come out to be shot until you trigger them.

>> No.5435504

Still - TR2 had way more human enemies than TR1. I think the only human enemies in TR1 were the "boss fights" against Natlas henchmen.

Also, I wonder about the ratio of easy to challenging enemies in both games.
TR1 had a lot of bats and bugs that go out in one shot but still count as enemies. TR2 had disproportionately more "serious" enemies like guys with guns or scuba divers - and those fuckers were a pain in the ass.

>> No.5435505

>dodging and sidejumping was always clunky

No it wasn't, just don't be a no-skill pleb and know where to aim and you won't fuck up your jumps. You have to commit to your jumps and if there's something in the way it screws up your jump. Not that hard to remember.

>until you tell her to stop and shoot something else
You mean by letting go of shoot and then pressing shooting again? Not that hard?

>> No.5435528

>>5435505
The problem begins when you don't have a space to jump or dodge properly. And there are a lot of tight corridors in Italy. So in the end it becomes a game of "let's hope I can kill this guy quicker than he can kill me, because I will take damage regardless and any stupid move on my part may stunlock me".

Yes of course, AoD was the first with shaky platforming. Chronicles was solid too mechanically, it was just disappointing as a game. I still think Chronicles is vastly better than anything that came after, even if it's by far the worst of the first 5. 1 and 4 are tied as my favourites with 3 slightly behind.

Chronicles was a mess, I admit, but I love it for the gameplay systems that come with the old grid-based movement. They're puzzle platformers as much as they're action games. Everything since missed out on that. Shadows was cool but I hate how the rest have autosnap platforming and certain ledges that slide you off despite being visually flat. Everything Chronicles-specific sucked.

Dunno. I would take LAU games over 5. Chronicles legitimately felt like an expansion pack to 4.

2013 is fine as a game, I guess but it doesn't feel like a TR. It's a dark and gritty Uncharted game with a new protagonist and a TR brand slapped on it. I don't remember other TR games being so dreary and depressing - quite the opposite.

>takes at any range 1 shot from Deagle
>takes at short and mid range 6 shots from MP5; 8 at maximum range
>takes fucking 10 at point blank from Uzis, up to 30 depending on range
You were saying something?
The uzis have shit aim and when you jump, the aim gets even worse. That was always true in every single TR, but in case of TR3, they've nerfed the sheer stopping power of the weapon. So you have poor aim AND poor damage when you land a hit
This ultimately means shotgun is a better gun for acrobatics in TR3 than uzis, as unintuitive it seems to be. Also, Deagle is pretty damn good, but the ammo is to rare to risk it at acrobatics, when you can just stand still and everything but bosses and T-Rex drop at 5 shots max (and if you use cheats, then Tony dies at 10 shots).

Lol, no it's not, and the shotgun has an even shorter range than the uzis. Shotgun is good for enemies that take 1 or 2 full-hits to take down, out-side of that, it's not as effective as any of the other weapons. Uzis generally take down a human enemy in 3 seconds.

I wasn't insinuating that they were as good as they were in the previous ones at all, I simply said that you miss the uzis and you shit bed in pretentious smugness thinking you knew something when you didn't.

I just tested the uzis in-game against the MP5 and the Shotgun and the pistols, and they kill faster than the pistols, they kill at about the same rate as the shotgun give or take a few milliseconds, and they are slower than the MP5 in terms of damage, but they lock on quicker than the MP5, and you have the added versatility of using them while jumping.

Quite frankly, if you want to get rid of someone quickly and you don't want to waste your MP5 or deagle ammo, that makes the uzis a viable option at medium to close distances, where-as the shotgun is more effective as a one-shot kill for weaker enemies like dogs and snakes.

This was a discussion about the effectiveness of the uzis in the game, specifically compared to the MP5, and I literally just proved that half my original statement was correct. If they didn't do as much damage as the MP5, that still wouldn't make them useless, you thick-shit skulled mongoloid.

I rarely found a use for the MP5. I either use jumps/rolls to reduce damage taken, or I find an elevated position against non-hitscan enemies and don't need to waste my limited ammo. Maybe it'd be useful against close range enemies as they move in on you, but it still seems better to just jumproll while peppering them. I'm interested to know any specifics about when you guys use it though since I usually end up sat on a bunch of ammo for it by the end of the game. It always felt clumsy due to the startup time before firing and limiting your mobility so much.
