If I may suggest, the reasoning of this fellow was that if he claimed not to have seen anything substantially better than what was on the Atari 800, this would bait other forum goers to respond to his post with examples of NES games that in their opinion were substantially better than that of the Atari 800. Scrolling is easy and the DLI system means you don't need raster interrupts to do split screen scrolling. The sprites are the hard part because they're very limited compared with how they work on the NES and some considerable imagination is needed to pull it off.

Big problem back in the 80s was that you really needed 64k to pull off NES kinds of games and developers couldn't be bothered to support anything but the 48k Atari 800.

The Atari 8-bits can do a lot of the same stuff as the C64 and NES, but it's harder to pull off (the sprite system being one big reason) and won't look as nice due to the limited number of colors it can get on screen.

One issue is that the A8's char mode has 128 characters as opposed to the 256 characters of the other systems. Although SMB has pretty simplistic graphics so it's not too big an issue. If you were trying to port Konami or whatever games with highly detailed background graphics, then you might run into that limit particularly since some characters would have to be reserved for soft sprites.

Someone did a partial Sonic recreation on the Amiga. The OCS Amiga is a lot less capable machine than the MD so as I expected, you end up with a game that's a little closer to the Master System Sonic.

Also Sega were originally planning to licence US Gold to port home computer versions of Sonic, but backed out after seeing what a huge success it was.
