I beat Sonic 1 perfectly once back in the day. You just need patience. 300 attempts? Nah, more like 10 x 3 lives per continue. So 30. That probably took a good day or two all added up.

I don't have proof, but getting a perfect on Sonic 1 shouldn't be too hard except for those damn bonus zones, which are cool, but falling sucks. Frankly, beating Sonic 1 perfectly or not is such a show of medium skill at best, I see little reason to devote time to it. Instead I'm going to beat the fuck out of Zelda II and back it with evidence.

You know i heard recently that some younger people wanted to get into retro games but after playing them they said they were to hard. I guess for me these games were fun because they were hard. It was the challenge of beating them that made them that way. Looking at many of the modern games I play I see a pattern that they give you a lot to do in the game but none of it is really what you could describe as hard in many titles.

Zelda II first. Sonic another day. I did say perfectly for Sonic which means all the emeralds, but it's totally doable. It'll probably take adult me a couple of days or more to git gud. Being conservative with my estimates.

All right, it's almost noon here, I better start on Zelda II soon. I can beat that much easier and have in recent years.

That's been done to death. And, not that you'd believe it, Donkey Kong can be found in the game if you beat the game without using warps OR shortcuts 360 times in a row. Now that one has not been done in years, but one of the big video game magazines from back in the day wrote an article on it. So many things are lost and forgotten in older video games through their sheer difficultly and cryptic nature.

Another one: There's a code that you have to input so fast that most refuse to believes it's real, but there is a code that allows you to play as Superman in Bad Dudes for the NES.

One of my favorite memories is beating this game with every Emerald achieved. I never did as well in Sonic 2. But Sonic 1 is the true template for a Sonic game. All the extra characters, and total bullshit they tried to put in the new sonics I don't consider canon.

The hardest thing about the run was having to start all over when I lost all my lives. The game is harder than I remember and I used to be able to have more keys at the end than one, but I got sloppy. Thankfully Nintendo mercifully allowed one to continue at the last palace if one lose all their lives. Getting through the dark zone was tough, but just took 3 attempts. It was down to the wire getting to that palace. And I feel ragged, but I did it.

The TV is from April 1980 according to the factory sticker on the back. It's a "Sampo" and it looks great in person, as pictures come out like crap. Yeah, I need to look into better visual/video solutions. Oh and the previous saves held for years; I've never opened it, but it may have had its battery changed, or maybe not. There's some freaky long-lived batteries out there.

Moments playing Zelda II today that felt like it took years off my life:

>1: The phantom boss nearly killed me on my last guy, and his level is not one I want to replay soon.
>2: Nintendo had a lot of guts calling something "continue" when it almost always made you start over at the beginning and having you trek a while just to get back to the point you died and learn from it.
>3: The Magical Key was put into the game to make it more fun, clearly.
>4: Having to rely on fairy power more than ever due to not having the Candle, Cross, and especially the Key makes the experience more like Ocarina of Time in a way.
>5: This proves that the game is far more fair than most believe and that collecting all the items is a normie run.

>> No.5277857

>>5276178
Sonic 1 was my first video game and I've beaten it many times on actual Genesis hardware.

It's not as hard as you think, it's just more about pinball physics than "gotta go fast" contrary to popular belief. Avoid using the shoe item that makes you go fast unless you're speedrunning; it makes the game a lot harder. Take your time when you need to. When you're moving fast, do a quarter-circle down on the d-pad to roll into a ball so that you kill enemies you run into instead of losing rings. Don't sweat it if you lose rings, just recollect what you can before they disappear and move on. When you get damaged you have invincibility frames (sonic starts blinking), but in the first version of Sonic spikes ignore that.

>> No.5277951

Sonic 1 is the hardest of the Genesis trilogy but that isn't saying much. Sonic 2 is a pretty easy game outside of the last boss, which is only challenging because you can jump right through him and die if you're not careful. Sonic 3 & Knuckles throws so many lives at you that I think it's basically impossible to get a game over. Both also allow you to get Super Sonic very early, which turns the game into a joke.

Sonic 1 has the whole drowning thing and scrap brain is definitely the hardest platforming in the series. But it's also a fairly short game that is generous with the lives.

It occurred to me a few years ago that I couldn't be sure that I'd ever beaten Sonic 1, so I went and did it. I beat it on my first try with a lot of lives to spare, and I've since done it a couple more times because I enjoyed it a fair bit. I think Sonic 2 is still the better game, but the fact that Sonic 1 actually puts up a fight gives it points in my book.

You need an authority, like Twin Galaxies and witnesses (who are filmed as well) viewing the insides of the cartridges and the consoles-including the controllers, anything less can be faked. It's possible anyway to cheat at gaming at various levels of skill ranging from the mildly clever to downright magician-like. As it stands, I'd say at least half of the stuff on Youtube is fake is some fashion.

There's one guy who is very, very popular, but now and then I swear he's cheating, but I'm not 100% sure, so I'll keep it to myself, but..

I think you mean it can't be proven definitely anymore through a video to verify a video game score. There's just too much that someone could do to give them an extra edge:

>doctored ROMs inside a chip on a game
>same for the console
>their controller may be modified to send secret commands

I like sowing doubt in scores because of so many YT cheaters.

Even based on this, Sonic 2 gives you about a million chances to get the emeralds. You can get all of them in the first level. Sonic 3 is a bit harder because you have to find the super rings but you still get multiple chances per act. Sonic 1 gives you one try per act and you don't get super Sonic, so the main game isn't trivialized.
