FF1 is absolutely the best, and I say that as someone who didn't even play it until playing many of the others first.

What makes FF1 so good is the pacing. Battles are quick and lack the painfully long attack animations of later games, there's no excessive dialogue with retarded anime shit, and you can traverse the overworld easily. The speedy gameplay not only makes it easy to jump in for either 15m or 3 hours, it also creates this highly satisfying gameplay loop where you're constantly gaining money, experience and items without sifting through constant cutscenes and the like. When you finally return to town with all of your goodies and you get to restock and upgrade, it's intoxicating.

Everything is made better by the amazing atmosphere and music, as well as the endless replay value associated with being able to form a new kind of party every time you play. Later games simply lack the refined simplicity of FF1, and that is why it will always be the best.

I don't care if a game doesn't have realistic depictions of sex and violence if the game has good mechanics and is fun for me. However in Japan it could be problematic if a game has too much sex, like the stuff published for the PC engine, the Saturn or the Vita, which were doomed to be known as the "porn game" systems and nobody who is serious about making games want to be associated with that.

Also >roots in Western RPGs
That is true, most early versions of Japanese RPGs were inspired by the Japanese ports of Ultima and Wizardry. The job system seems to be directly lifted from the class system of WIzardry for instance.

It's not really surreal, FF1 was the product of multiple people who liked RPGs (one of which was a massive RPG nerd) and wanted one chance at making something they liked since the company might have died after that, which is why FF1 ended up the way it is, it's a last ditch effort by a team that worked on a pretty simple but clear vision based on their passion, FF2 is the same but more ambitious.

IV is my favourite, but it's also the only pre-VII entry I've ever finished. I played the Chronicles version.

Never finished V, and maybe it's because I played the weird Anthology translation. FFVI's last leg was a slog, so I didn't finish it either.

I tried the DS version of III and somewhere past half-way in I was like "why am I playing this?" because all of it felt like trodden territory, even if what I'd played before came after it.

I suppose I should just play the first game to completion, at least, since I am a very big fan of some of the later games (all of the PSX ones, X-2 and XII).

I think I would really like to play II, because everyone says it's bad and I want to experience why for myself. That, and it establishes early on that one of the core features of the series is a willingness to experiment.

i love FF2 for trying some ambitious mechanics which, sadly, failed in execution. FF4 has a tight story but not a lot of replay value. FF6 kind of lost me.

personal favorite at this point is probably FF5. i still can't believe some fucking apetard came up with the idea to have the big bad evil boss be "an evil tree" and somehow made it work. i hate Exdeath way more than any other boss in any of these games.

Tactics and its goofy-hearted sequels are also a blast and a better implementation of the Job system. but i suppose those are different genres and don't answer OP's question.

5 and 6, but for totally different reasons. 5 has, in my opinion, the best Job system that the series has ever seen and, by extension, probably the best gameplay overall. The story is very basic, but it more than makes up for it with a likable cast of characters, including the debut of Gilgamesh.

FF6, on the other hand, has atmosphere in spades. The setting has a huge amount of personality, and it does steampunk well in a time before steampunk became trashy and overdone. The World of Ruin has its share of problems, though. I think it was a mistake making it as open-ended as they did, because that messes with the difficulty curve and means that most of the characters don't really have any stand-out moments in the latter half.

After that, I think it goes 4 > 1 > 3 > 2

I feel like this applies to every FF game I've played. The characters and plot are interesting enough if you're used to anime (except IV because it is dog shit), but the world building is always lacking. The overworlds are so empty, most of the towns are just small hamlets and nothing really happens that doesn't involve your party. The southern continent in FF2 comes to mind; it's absolutely massive, but completely empty apart from the one dungeon you need to go to.

Otherwise, though, I get what you're saying.

7 is the worst offender imho. There are cars but no roads, trains that don't go anywhere, and basically no large civilization outside of Shinra-built locations even though humans are implied to have lived there for thousands of years. Nibelheim exported coal before the discovery of Mako, but to who? And what did they use it for? What happened to the rest of Wutai? Why were there no port towns before Shinra, when sailing logically must've been one of the first modes of transportation discovered? How does everyone have a TV when seemingly nothing is ever imported/exported from Midgar?
