Maybe because MGS2 isn't meant to represent an actual sequel of MGS, but merely another, even more enhanced re-experiencing of the original game. Ghost babel was already taking that route. Postmodernism m8, look it up.

Also MGS2 is the last game I see as canon. Anything after that is unwanted yet well made fanfiction. A guilty pleasure.

MG1, 2 and MGS are all part of the same canon. The Metal Gear series.

Then there's Metal Gear Solid, 2 and 4. I dislike these games.

Then there's the Big Boss series, MGS3, PW, MGS5.

I keep the continuity of these games separate.

Not that hard to understand, it's just incredibly stupid from Solid 2 onwards.

Then.....4 did its thing.

I think MGS2 should be put along MG2 and MGS1, since he's yet another take on the original Zanzibar/Shadow Moses course of events, at least spiritually. Also the Tanker part is a direct homage to MGS1 fans, ALL of it. Music, Game Over, stealth, Snake. Don't be harsh on the game, man.

MGS4 is the one I also barely dislike.

I've been playing the Metal Gear games for the first time, in fact I just beat MGS2 last night.

I liked MG1+2 and LOVED MGS, MGS2 was pretty good too I guess. I'm kind of worried to keep going through the series because I hear it gets even more retarded and "anime" than MGS2 was, but I want to play Peace Walker coop so we'll see what happens I guess.

Really cool series though, how are Policenauts and Snatcher just so I can keep this post /vr/ related?

Everything after MGS2 was after the point where Kojima thought the series should finish, so everything after that was made increasingly just because the series was so popular and people wanted him to. I just consider everything after MGS3 to be gravy.

This is how I view the series:

Official "Main" storyline: MG1, MG2, MGS1, MGS2. The original story ends here.

Big Boss storyline: MGS3, MGSPO (debatable canonicity), MGSPW and any other game where Big Boss is the main protagonist. This storyline shows how Big Boss became a villain in the first place.

"War has changed" storyline: MGS4 and MGR. Non-canon, alternate continuity which was meant to act as the series finale (for those who didn't "get" MGS2's ending).

Stand-alone storyline: MGSGB. Nice story, but doesn't fit anywhere else, therefore non-canon.

Ac!d series: MGA1 and MGA2. No comment. Non-canon.

Actually it was marketed more towards children in the west - the English dubs made a lot of changes to make it appeal to children as well as modify the script to make it more kid-friendly (e.g the English dub by Ocean Studios went so far as to try to censor death completely).

It wasn't just a hit in North America, you know. For example, DBZ was much more popular in Latin America than anywhere else in the world (including the US).

Sheesh, I've never seen a group wallowing more in their denial. MG 1&2, MGS 1-4, Portable Ops, Peacewalker are all definitely connected in the same canon whether you like it or not.
