Once as a kid.
Don't think I can claim more than once. But I know I did it once, because I remember getting right pissed off at a few certain jumps in world 8 a lot. As well as my determination to actually beat all the games I owned.

The one that I haven't actually done however; is TMNT. I did do it in recent years with liberal use of save scumming just because I wanted to at least experience the whole game and see how close we actually managed (very).
But there's no way in high hell we'd have ever managed to do the hallway of retarded doom before shredder. Who is about as much of a joke as Rocksteady was when you Donatello cheesed him from atop the crates.

Spelunker is epic. You have to pay attention all the time or a tiny drop can kill you. The controls are perfect for the game, but don't follow common platforming standards so you have to actually learn the game's mechanics to git gud.

>> No.5064135

Never as a kid, cause that game feels very longwinded and samey if you've already touched any of the immediate sequels (including SMB2J/Lost Levels). Did it as a grown up for completions sake and you know what? There's exactly one or two proper difficult sections in the game. Not entire levels, just sections, and all of them involve not being big and timing a run past hammer bros.

Beating SMB1 the "proper" way is in no way a big deal and I don't know what makes you believe it would be. Maybe you just need to play some videogames?

Hell yeah it's epic! I never got the weird disdain the game seems to spawn. Deadly Towers gets memed as a bad game but it's actually pretty good. The only issue IMO is common enemies need like a dozen hits to die. Also, the game pretty much REQUIRES you to draw maps. From my limited experience as a kid, Dr. Chaos was the hardest for me to figure out. I bought it without a manual and had never played an adventure hybrid before. After watching someone play it on youtube decades later I felt pretty stupid for not figuring it out. Still haven't gone back to beat it, but Halloween is coming up and it has the most badass spooky intro ever, so maybe I'll give it a go again.

I can't recall the hardest in difficulty. There have been a good amount of games I've had to give up on for a number of reasons. But I'll say Sub-Terrania for the sake of discussion, and because I remember my friend and I trying for weeks to beat this damn game. Good memories.

I assumed it was an antipiracy thing and the solution's in the manual. Some websites say it's there, and one typed copy of the manual has it. But a bunch of Spectrum/C64 mags posted the right items in their hints section (which they would never do if was about piracy), and I can't find it anywhere in pic related. Instead, there's

>Don't worry too much about selecting the freedom kit. There will come
a point in the game where you will go no further but it looks as if you
should. At that point take careful note of where you are, restart the game
and select the item from the freedom kit that will help you on your way!

3 of the items (the jetpack, gas tank and passport) are only needed near the end of the game. From what I can tell, you're expected to complete almost the entire game 4 times, or even more if you screw up the items.

I did not find drawing maps to be particularly helpful in Deadly Towers, because the dungeons loop at various points. Jedi power battles was the hardest 3d platformer I ever played and that was mostly due to the shit camera and shit play control. Unless you stood i na sweet spot the camera would not pan over to offscreen platforms and you constantly had to make blind faith jumps into the abyss.

There could be a platform above or below you, and even if you did guess correctly and made that blind leap, the odds were good you would simply fall through the edge of that platform since everything was round. Round platforms in theed city. Round mushrooms in the naboo swamp. Every jump was perilous and playing co-op made the camera even worse. One player would make the jump, the other would not and the camera would shift and both players would be fucked off the edge of the screen.

The crappy design was really the only thing that made the game difficult, once you learn where the game is likely to fuck you over jumps and screen transitions, and how to mitigate that mess, it's piss easy.

I could never beat Darth Maul as Plo Koon though.

I always found breakout clones like Arkanoid to be the most difficult.

Holy water (especially upgraded holy water) trivializes second form of Dracula. You can just stunlock him forever while whipping his head.

Hell, most of the game is completely trivialized by using holy water. The movements of medusa heads and fleamen can just be blocked, and any remotely difficult enemy/boss can be stunlocked completely with just one upgrade. Basically feels like the subweapons are an obfuscated difficulty select, with people opting for cross accidentally picking hard mode.

I thought 3 was the easiest(aside from 2 on "normal"). Only things that ever gave me a challenge was Shadow Man and one Rush Marine part because of the distance to a weapon capsule at the end of a run. Yellow Devil was so much easier as well, and Wily was a joke. I honestly think 1 is the hardest because the controls aren't as tight, but as you go through the series insta death bull shit becomes more common as well as new enemies spawning in new areas to knock you back into a pit. 5 also had that shitty Met looling thing in the circle that you could only shoot through the doors. 5 had easy robot masters for the most part, the battles were just so slow.

Life's only bullshit because of the RNG and bitch ass NPCs. Calling a government office or a utility company is the equivalent of hunting for info in a poorly translated RPG village.

played a few games way back on C64 (ie NZ Story, Creatures) that weren't necessarily extremely difficult, but they were REALLY long with tonnes of levels and you only got a few lives so unless you used a lives cheat (which weren't readily available/known att) there was no way in hell you were beating them or even making it reasonably far into it

>still enjoyed the fuck out of them though
