/vr/ - Retro Games

Sadly, /vr/ is mostly filled with American consolefags who are too retarded to operate DOSBox or setup these older games properly. Or they'd say that all wrpgs suck compared to their boring inferior DQ clones.

lol the sewers under Baldur's Gate are filled with dead bodies that you can pick up. I think I'm going to put them in a church or in front of a bunch of kids. or maybe just break into some random's house and fill it with bodies.

This game is finally starting to not suck. I don't understand why it took so long to let you get into Baldur's Gate. All the quests up until this point just felt like filler. I've realized that the infinity engine games really shine in dungeons and tight spaces, which is why I like BG2 and Icewind Dale so much. It's just not a good system for open world stuff.

And actually if you RP, you are supposed to be "on the run" and runing out of time to solve a conspiracy problem.

It would had been good for the game to have some "time constraints".
Maybe an easy mode without timers and a hard mode when you can actually take so much time that Sarevok end up being duche, makes his little war of sacrifices, get power (maybe just a power up and not ascension) and you lose / get murdered or something.

I hate how people take 3 months to reach the city and then they crie that the game is too easy.

I'm still super fond of Might and Magic 2. I loved the rest too but 2 in particular had a certain something that ended up with me having a little notebook with every nook and cranny mapped and documented.
That final cryptogram was a kick in the nuts because I could barely read English by then and I had absolutely no idea what to do, although I ended up figuring it out. But I didn't get what it was a reference to until I was a lot older, heh. More educative than all "edutainment" out there.

Also I'm fond of RPGs with technology so while all of the game is practically medieval barring Iron Wizards and such, knowing it's still a space station is enough to sate me in that aspect.

Agreed. Although I have to make an exception for the Ys games. They actually have good gameplay, don't bog you down with 30 minute unskippable dialogue about wanting to fuck 14 year olds and have pretty amazing soundtracks to top it off.

BG isn't worth RPing because to be honest: the story isn't good at all. It's generic as fuck even for the time, The quests are generic fetch quests and the characters are fucking annoying, and yes I played it around when it came out and I still thought that.

BG2 had cool cities to explore, organizations to join, political power struggles and at the very least a decently voice acted villian. It was much more suited for RPing than BG1

how is the new bards tale remake? ive never played the series. im in the mood for a good turn based blobber, and i find im too casual to actually finish wizardry 7.

My first playthrough of Baldur's Gate 1 was with a pure fighter and I enjoyed it, but I want to try a different class and use it to play through both BG and BG2. I tried a Bard earlier this year but I wasn't making enough use of the bard song and wasn't casting spells enough to feel I was getting much out of the character. What's a fun class? Gnome Fighter/Illusionist sounds interesting.

It's amazing how fast WRPG threads devolve into evident inferiority complex bitching towards JRPGs, coupled with the usual hypocrisy where you all pretend JRPGs are only FF shit.

Maybe you'd be less angsty and enjoy your life more if you actually played both, maybe we could also have decent threads about them, but noooo, must engage in the usual caveman tribal mentality and call anyone who disagrees a weeb.

The biggest problem people have with BG1 is that they started playing the series with BG2. BG1 must have seem like a godlike game on release, but its worse in most ways compared to the sequel and knowing that you have already seen things handled better elsewhere will make you resent the game.

Usually everyone have one JRPG that they really love. And that one will be the first one they ever played. Because at that point it will be original and interesting enough that you'll put up with the grind. Later installments will always look dull by comparison.

In my case it was Final Fantasy 8. Everyone complained about how much worse than 7 it was but for me there has never been a better JRPG.

It's good but not great. Half-Giants kind of trivialize everything, being able to see every encounter on a map is dumb, and overall it mostly makes me want to play Baldur's Gate instead. But it's really good.

Hmmm first jrpg i played was...i wouldnt count pokemon. .Hack i guess which i did enjoy. But i played Chrono Trigger FF7 Persona 5 this year and dropped half or 3/4ths the way through they werent bad but not good enough that i wanted to keep playing felt more like work cus i just wanted to beat them.

Those kind of covers are absolutely disgusting. The people responsable for this piece of shit being in the front cover should had be hanged.
