I've read studies on it (yes, I have no life like that) but the biggest reason for the increase in furries is the cartoons of the 1970's-2000's.

Think of the infinite number of cartoons you saw growing up that had anthropomorphic animals as the main characters. Even worse are the cases where the female animals are clearly modeled to be more human like. When kids have their sexual awakenings they project their sexual fantasies on what they know, and what they know is anthropomorphic characters.
