It was more than just square. Their third party support in general was lacking for RPGs. Most major Japanese developers were still making RPGs and they were also releasing games on the N64, just wasn't a combination of both. JRPGs just weren't a priority of nintendo at the time on consoles, and the library suffered because of it.

At least we got Ogre Battle 64.

Golden Sun is drastically overrated. I mean it's a fine game, but it doesn't deserved to be praised for being this all-time classic. It was basically baby's first RPG for the generation after FF7's

golden sun had a really cool class system with the djinn and the puzzles were neat. I'd say this is enough to put it above bland jrpgs like chrono trigger, ff7, dragon quest 7, suikoden, etc. but the balance was poor (to the point where you could just ignore the class system and spam basic attacks and still win) which really detracted from the game. Also the writing could have been better. Overall it was okay.

Golden Sun was baby's first JRPG for the generation that came after Final Fantasy VII.
And there's nothing wrong with that. It's a great entry-level game for the genre.

Everybody acts like the N64's lack of JRPGs was some huge flaw -- lol dude, JRPGs are one of the shittiest genres known to man. I never once sat playing my N64 thinking "oh boy, I wish I had more autistic turn-based roleplaying games with cringey anime characters where you wander around a big world map running into invisible monsters!". I got to play actual good games, like Ocarina of Time, Perfect Dark, Doom 64, Star Fox 64, Quake, Banjo-Kazooie... you know, games that are actually engaging and fun.

The really ironic part though, is that while the N64 didn't have almost any JRPGs, it had the best one ever made: Paper Mario. The only reason Paper Mario doesn't suck too is because Nintendo knows JRPGs are shit and did everything possible to actually make it fun instead of following typical turn-based tropes.

I only care about good games, and the N64 had a ton of good games. The PS1 was, by and large, a trash can. The N64 did not lose to the PS1 because it lacked JRPGs, it lost because the PS1 had a fucking two year advantage and was vastly cheaper to develop for. Regardless, Nintendo still made more money than Sony did.

The thing is, people that like JRPGs don't actually like games. They want an interactive story, which is why JRPGs are. They want to experience a sweeping story where they can be a hero, have friends and acquire love interests. That's why every JRPG has "parties", because JRPGs are literally social simulators. There are a few choice animes that I like (mostly Western-geared stuff like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Big-O, etc.), and I also think that 99% of them are absolutely steaming trash, but it's not really the same thing. Anime doesn't put you in the shoes of anyone, it's just a story in the same way that a book or movie is. A game is different. A JRPG puts you in a role and makes you feel "immersed". Probably because of cost of development, available resources from the dev, lack of interest from Nintendo, and the fact that the game is in a delicate state because no matter which system they switch to, it's going to require a major redesign with any assets thrown out and redone. I never liked Golden Sun. Got the original when it first came out, played for like 30 minutes, and was bored out of my mind. I wasn't very picky about games back then so for me to abandon a game means it was pretty fucking boring.

Golden Sun/the Lost Age were both amazing games. Great graphics, unique settings, strange references to real world mythology [Lemuria], memorable characters, fun battle system, fun class system.

What's not to love? I remember my mind being blown as the plot thickens at the end of the first game, only to realize in the second game that we would actually get to visit Lemuria. Shit was cash.
