This. Sick of fags whining about the soundtrack when it's fantastic, experimental, and reflective of where underground dance music was at the time. As atmosphere it's great, slowing down in emptier areas and kicking in when shit gets wild, Only thing bad about this game was the US version being a hackjob - and nowadays you don't have to play it.

The soundtrack went wrong. It went so wrong that it may just be the worst videogame soundtrack in history - how many other soundtracks have ever been so bad that they've been widely blamed for the failure of a game?

It's technically impressive for the chipset, but at the end of the day it sounds like absolute ass if you're not into its specific niche genre, because to most people it's pretty much just random noise over the top of a melody, almost to the point of drowning it out.

On top of that, it's completely unmemorable. I've played through the game a dozen times and there isn't single song in it that I ever end up humming to myself. There's nothing that sticks in your head and goes round and round, nothing that gets you stuck into the gameplay loop.

>> No.4520580

>not the devs fault they didn't realize they were far to cutting edge for the average dork gamer.

Except it is the their fault. Their entire job was to create a product for a market, and they fucked up and created one for a niche of people into a weird genre that was popular for all of 20 minutes, and never got that big even at its height.

Your post is basically a bitter, holier-than-thou admission that yes, the soundtrack absolutely torpedoed the entire game. You just want to blame the players instead of the people who produced it for not being avant garde enough in regards to what they want to hear while pretending to punch punks and hookers in the face.

The fucking ignorance, detroit techno was big in the underground then, was exported to the u.k where it birthed literally multiple genres and movements and has become an absolute stable of music that pioneered massively, detroit tech is still very popular now you feral daft ignoramus burke cunt. >how many other soundtracks have ever been so bad that they've been widely blamed for the failure of a game?

Anyone who does that is an idiot. Whether you like the soundtrack or not, the game failed primarily because of WHEN it was released. The 16bit era was coming to a close and SEGA was eating its own market.

Now, in a pure "is this good or isn't it" sense, the gameplay had issues. There was a lot of polish in some places and a complete lack of it in others. You had loads more moves at your disposal, a weirdo "level up" system on your double tap forward + B special that loads of people didn't know existed because it kills the counter when you lose a life. Enemy AI that just wanders around keeping outside of your range then everyone decides to attack at once. The cheapest bosses to date, a hard time limit on a level that's a maze forcing you to grind your way back to it if you choose the wrong doors...
And of course, the fact that the Jap version had a proper story, cutscene artwork, better titles...

Sure, fun can be had out of it, but people get hung up on the soundtrack when it was the least of the game's issues.
