Did it age well?

No, but seriously, is there any reason to play Final Fantasy 1 on NES, instead of the Playstation or GBA?

Nerd cred, I suppose. You can play the PSX version on Normal and toggle all the addon options to off for a purist experience.
There are still some differences in that certain mechanics were bugged and didn't function properly on NES. My favourite being that the success rate of running from battle depended on what the last two digits of the third and fourth characters' current HP was.

>>4432426
Yeah but I mean, is there any valid reason to play the NES original rather than a later port of it?

>> No.4432568

The ruleset/mechanic is different. It's closer to D&D. Also the speed of game. The loading is minimal but it still has some.

The only reason I can think of is if you want the original style graphics, but even then you'd be better off playing the Famicom version as it doesn't have all the bugs of the NES version. For English, PS1 is the best choice since it kept the original targeting style as an option and kept the Vancian casting instead of breaking the game with normal MP.

I recently beat it and enjoyed it a lot. There is a fan patch that fixes the bugs and some other tiny changes like being able to buy items in the store x10 instead of one at a time.

I think this is the best route because the remakes alter the game too much and if you're not getting the original experience than whats the point of even playing FF1

>> No.4433292

GBA version is trash, it changes the spell system and overall makes the game a casual slog.

PS1 version is a surprisingly great remake, you can turn off innovations like auto-target and make it basically a nice looking bugfixed FF1. Certainly the only port I'd bother with.

FF1 on NES is buggy, slow, and difficult. The only reason to play it is for the difficulty, and if you really love 8-bit graphics and chip tunes.

I played both the GBA version and the NES version to completion, I'd probably come back to the GBA version between the two of them.

But I think there's also romhacks that fix the bugs and make things more balanced that I'd try out first.

Depends on what you want out of it, and if you care about accuracy.

Play a trans-hack of the Japanese FF1 if you want the most "authentic" FF1.

Play the Playstation version if you want a mostly-accurate port with better graphics and music.

Play the GBA version if you want a streamlined experience that's not very accurate to the original game, but more in line with later FF games (spells use MP instead of D&D-style "spells per day", phoenix down exists, etc.)

If you play the NES/Fami version, make sure you have the manual, otherwise you won't know what half the spells do.

>>4432404
>is there any reason to play Final Fantasy 1 on NES
Well yeah. If you want to exprience the game in the form that actually metters. The game that actually had a bit of an impact on the genre. The remakes are not that game. They're like the Special Editions of Star Wars, kids like them more but ultimately they have no artistic worth.

>> No.4434437

>>4434427
What a retarded fucking opinion. Do you only play games for influence and impact? I don't. I play them to have fun. Playing a buggy, ugly NES game is stupid when I can play a version which plays 99% identically and is vastly superior in every conceivable way.

Maybe because some people don't want to play a shitty NES game? Some games should be played in their original format -- I would never tell anyone to play Star Fox 64 3D or Ocarina of Time 3D instead of the originals, because it loses all the charm. But this? No. There is absolutely nothing about the awful NES version that isn't vastly improved upon in the remake, and has even more atmosphere and charm than the original.

>> No.4434534

>>4434459
Your neutered casualized remake isn't an improvement at all, it was a shitty cash in at the time and still is. There are thousands of RPGs that do everything ff1 does better and cleaner. You can play any number of them, the only reason to play a game like ff1 is for the experience which put the series on the map, the bare bones imperfect nature of the game itself is what makes it fun to play. Sounds like modern games are more your speed.

>> No.4434548

recently tried to replay this, i could not beat it without using cheat codes to remove random encounters and i think i also gave myself gold but not experience. the artificial difficulty made from the stupid amount of encounters and how long it takes to gain EXP makes it a really shitty game to drudge through at the normal intended pace. im pretty sure i also frame skipped to try and grind out levels and shit. otherwise the game is literally like a vicious time sink and its not necessary to go through it.

>Your neutered casualized remake isn't an improvement at all, it was a shitty cash in at the time and still is.
Neutered and casualized? How exactly? By not being riddled with game-breaking bugs? I'm not sure how you can call it a "cash in" either, given that it's a complete overall of both FF1 and FF2 with entirely new graphics, music and features. If only most remakes gave such care to the source material.
>the only reason to play a game like ff1 is for the experience which put the series on the map
Lmao, yep, just like I thought. You don't actually even like the game, you're just a pseudo intellectual faggot who wants to appreciate the "influence" it had.
>the bare bones imperfect nature of the game itself is what makes it fun to play.
Oh my god, you are such a fucking faggot.
>Sounds like modern games are more your speed.
No, good games are my speed. Clearly gaming in general isn't your speed, all you're interested in is fellating your own ego. Have fun playing your crusty, buggy 8bit NES RPG, retard.

>> No.4434557

>>4434548
Sadly I agree for the most part. The first few hours were fun when you have a clear direction of where to go, but once you have to start exploring the experience takes a massive dive. I calculated that, on average, you run into an encounter every 10 steps. 10, fucking, steps. Even if you flee from every fight, that's a good 30+ seconds of time you spend on every encounter. I love the music, atmosphere and simplicity of the combat, but as a whole, the game is a fucking mess.

Isn't this one of those games where the manual basically spoils the whole game though? Wouldn't it be better to play without it?

>> No.4435613

>>4434563
You need the manual to know what spells do, though. Since you can only learn 3/4 of the spells and can't unlearn them, it's kind of necessary to know what they do before you buy them.

then there are all those weird US-exclusive bugs like LOCK always missing, XFER only working on your own party, HEL2 healing the same as HEL3, etc.

>> No.4436038

>>4432404
I think it's still good. It's super basic compared to later FF games obviously but I think it's fun at its core. I hear the GBA version completely fucks up the magic system by changing everything to use MP, don't know about the PS1 version.

>> No.4436216

Alright, on a similar note to all this.

The only Final Fantasy I have ever played ever was like a half hour to an hour of Mystic Quest, which has admittedly seared that delicious battle theme in to my mind.
Where do I give the series a proper start?

don't play the dawn of souls version is all i can say about the first game.
the new stuff is neat, but it's just too easy.
i only realized i didn't really enjoy anything bout it until after i beat it.
the original and playstation versions gave me that sense of accomplishment and growth.
i played the originals after the new versions btw, so it's not a nostalgia thing.
anyways, something i thought was neat in the original is that the castle in the sky was more science fiction oriented instead of just looking like your usual fantasy dungeon.

Then there are those spells that are basically useless simply because the situations that call for them are super-rare. For example AMUT cures silence, but enemies that cast MUTE are nearly non-existent.

Almost every spell level seems to have that one "basically never used" spell, which trivializes (or does it quadrivialize?) the tetralemma of having to choose 3 out of 4 spells.

Just because it's /vr/ doesn't necessarily mean the original version of a game is the best. Like, would you tell somebody to play the original DOS version of Doom instead of ZDoom?

FF1 NES is buggy as hell. It'd be better to play the Famicom version (with a trans patch if you're an ELO player), or the "Final Fantasy Origins" remake on PlayStation.

Of course I would. ZDoom changes the gameplay significantly, even if you turn all the new features off and all the compatability features on it is still incredibly inauthentic. So it is the exact same situation as FF Origins. Good comparison Anon, though it backfired on you.
