A true favorite is hard to say honestly accounting only retro games. Honestly all I can do is give a list of some of my favorites.

Doomguy (Doom)
Ershin (Breath of Fire IV)
Megaman and Protoman (Megaman)
Abe (Oddworld)
Slime (Dragon Quest)
Pac-Man (Pac-Man)

Mostly typical stuff I know but those ones really stick out to me. As you might be able to tell I have a bit of thing for Capcom's character's designs.
>>4383689
>>4383809
SMT has some really cool designs for its humans, though of these two I highly prefer teh SMTI hero design. Really though I think the Demonica suit from Strange Journey is Kaneko's best work, that is probably my overall favorite videogame character design.
>>4383693
The information we learn from the Labyrinth of Amala highly suggest he may be a reincarnated Aleph who is being punished for opposing YHVH in SMTII. The one thing you could argue is that this information was only added in the MAINIAX version of Nocturne which expanded on the story and character of the game. It just happened that Atlus was smart and published the extended cut of the game in the West before releasing the original.
>>4383819
I enjoy all of his eras honestly. It's interesting to see the evolution from his early art seen in SMTI/II/If... to his more refined style seen in Devil Summoner and Soul Hackers to the now famous style we know now in Nocturne and Strange Journey.

Play Strange Journey on the DS. It is like a mix of SMTI/II and Nocturne. It is a first person dungeon crawler like SMTI/II but has a more developed combat system and the quality of life improvements of later games from Nocturne. It was inspired by western movies like The Thing and Damnation Alley and was created with a western fanbase in mind. It is my favorite SMT game personally.

IV is more like Nocturne as it is third person but I find the overall game just weaker. It has some nice improvements in terms of combat and mechanics and one of the greatest soundtracks ever created, this is no hyperbole, but is just not up to the quality of the other mainline games.

IV: Apocalypse is a sort of "what if" universe of IV, they are totally separate games. This game is a real mixed bag. The combat and polish in mechanics is phenomenal but the writing and story are anime bullshit and absolutely terrible. This one is great but only if you look at combat, if that alone is your thing then this one will be great in that regard. Just be ready to have to deal with some cringy cutscenes.

Unfortunately, with the success of Persona, SMT has gone down the path of anime BS. It was eventually going to hit this point anyway since the seeds of this were planted all the way back to SMT IF.

>> No.4383978

We can't know for sure honestly. IV had some anime bullshit but not that much honestly. It's IV:A that literally has a power of friendship ending though you can also murder all your friends so the fact that option exists makes it not total bullshit.

I don't want to get too off topic but I think it has to be accepted that with the massive success of Persona Atlus will maybe try to make mainline SMT more for a wider audience. The real question is when we will have to accept that we are playing is not really mainline we know and instead is the spinoff that is now the mainline. Little has been seen of it but SMTV looks pretty cool from the teaser they showed.

>>4385880
I would say probably only P2 of those games really uses its story as a major aspect, maybe SMTII. SMTI's story is pretty simple overall, it begins with the Gotou and Thorman arc and eventually things keep scaling slowly. Nocturne's story barely fucking matters honestly. All of the reasons are shit which is where most of the "story" comes from. The MAINIAX version helped as they built upon the world and characters but still.

I feel SMT games have kind of vague plots, Nocturne included, it's mostly the atmosphere and the world set up for you to delve into that's fascinating. Not the actual plot.

Gargoyle's Quest 1 and 2 are fairly different from Demon's Crest. 1 and 2 are structured somewhat like a hybrid between a JRPG and an action platformer. Between stages you travel on an overworld, engage in pointless random encounters, talk to NPCs, and collect permanent upgrades. Rather than granting new abilities, most upgrades make you better at what you can already do.

Demon's Crest has fundamentally similar platforming action, but there are no random battles and the game is much less linear, both in terms of stage order and how stages are completed. It's also one of the most beautiful games on the SNES. Upgrades tend to give you new abilities altogether. You can go to the final stage very early if you want. Make sure you get a password before you do if you want to go for the better endings. If you get 100% completion you unlock a difficult true last boss. The stages frequently demand a specific power to proceed so there is quite a bit of time spent going to the menu to switch to the right one, which is an unfortunate bit of tedium in an otherwise quality game.

They're all good, none are masterpieces. Most people would say Demon's Crest is the best one.

SMTI is just really difficult for people to get into due to how it has genuinely aged in terms of combat. The game throws quite a lot of bullshit in the beginning and to someone not familar with SMTI they might not know how to abuse things in order to survive. For quite some time I didn't realize how insanely broken aliments are in this game, you basically need to abuse them to succeed.

I myself am like you and found the story fantastic, even from the very beginning it really interested me. But I think this really is a case where it only appeals to small, dedicated niche.
