What are your thoughts on the original Legend of Zelda?

Also, I noticed that the lighting in this dungeon is different from the others. What was the intention here? To make it seem brighter? Look at Link's coloration.

>> No.3588464

As for the lighting, I have no idea.

The action itself is decent, but stuff in shops costs way too much. Also, it's a guide-game. Completing the game without any sort of outside information whatsoever is not my idea of a good time.

YOU DON'T NEED A GUIDE TO BEAT ZELDA 1 OR 2 IF YOU JUST EXPERIMENT A LITTLE. THE HARDEST POINTS IN BOTH GAMES IS FINDING THE POWER BRACELET, AND THE HIDDEN TOWN OF NEW KASUTO. ONE INVOLVES ACTIVATING AND KILLING THE ARMOS, WHICH ISN'T THAT MUCH A STRETCH, and THE OTHER IS SUSPICIOUSLY EMPTY EXPANSE OF WOODS THAT YOU ONLY HAVE TO KNOW THE HAMMER CAN DESTROY TREES TO FIGURE OUT.

A great game, if a bit cryptic at times.

It was also great seeking out help for the game via Nintendo Power or hotlines, or just collaborating with friends and exchanging tips. Nowadays that magic is lost with a quick Google search online. Miyamoto intended for the game to spark that sense of discovery and community, there is no shame in saying you can't beat the game blind.

Even if we remove the map from the equation, the manual alone has a step-by-step guide on exactly where to go to reach level 1 as well as a map pointing you to level 2. After that finding level 3 is a cakewalk, 4 is easily found by utilizing a dungeon item, 5's location is given by an NPC, 6 is easily found, 7's location is given by an NPC, 8's entrance is hinted at by an NPC(this may be vague but the tree that hides level 8 stands out), and 9's location is also given by an NPC.

Limitations of the NES 128 colors. Funny thing is, whenever I replay the game, I always wait to get the blue ring under after level 3. Because I love how Link blends into the level. Green is also my favorite color so I'm a bit bias.

I played through all of Zelda 1 properly for the first time this year with a complete world map and save states. I enjoyed it, but there was the occasional moment where I thought that figuring it was pure chance. Like in Second Quest where you're able to slide through certain walls by pushing against them. I happened to do it myself by accident the first dungeon it showed up, but I can't help but think that an element of luck or outside help is required for something like that. I also played the FDS version, so loading screens were pretty interesting.

I've played through most of this game today.
Not only did I find all the hearts, and most of the hidden money stashes. I found all the fuckers who made me pay for their doors.

It's pretty intuitive where you can bomb and where you can't. Bombs are pretty cheep too.
After world 7, you have the red candle, and can torch the whole forest in a few moments.

Lastly, the world is pretty small and easy to cross. Doesn't take much to try everything in every square.

And with that, I'm off to buy another red potion and hopefully finish level 9 without dying again.

A Zelda title at it's purest. Game play wise it is amazing yet simple all around but also secretive something that is commonly neglected but to me really invokes the imagination. It isn't my favorite but it has no problems aside from cardinal only movement but the game play is designed around that so I give it a pass. I like it more for it's atmosphere than game play. Not the aesthetics of ingame as much as the artwork but the presentation it gives you making you feel like you are experiencing a legend. No other Zelda but the Adventure of Link really gave that impression.

>MUH BOMB EVERYTHING posters

Why don't you actually tell him how to get BOMBs you tryhards?

For such a necessary tool, you should know there's only two ways to gets bombs.

1. Kill 9 enemies in a row without getting hurt. The 10th enemy will drop bombs.

2. Feed a bomb to a Dodongo. Then drop another one in front of it right after. it will go off, stunning the dodongo. Kill with sword. This is a guaranteed 4 bomb drop.

>> No.3609292

Two ways is right.
So you're not wrong there.

Buy them.
Kill blue things. Blue things drop bombs more often than orange things.
Suppose you could do the dodongo thing. But fuck me if I don't end up feeding the fuckers or missing them entirely wasting my bombs instead of farming more.
Killing blue things or spending 20 rupees is much easier in my opinion.

>> No.3609775

>>3607909
Not quite true. If you kill 9 enemies in a row without a hit, killing the 10th will drop a bomb...IF you use a bomb to kill it. Otherwise it'll be a 5-rupee drop.

Enemies in the "Bomb-dropping" item group (most blue overworld enemies, most red dungeon enemies, plus Vires) can drop when the global kill counter is at 1, 3, or 6. The clock item only can drop when the global counter is at 4 - you can use this to gauge where your count is to make sure you kill bomb-dropping enemies on 1/3/6.

>> No.3609778

>>3609775
>Follow-up
It has been discovered that stabbing the old man in dungeons does increase your consecutive kill counter - so if you take a hit, then stab the dude 9 times you can force a bomb drop by bombing the next enemy you see.

Also keep in mind that enemies in item drop group C (which is the bomb-dropping group) only yields an item about 30-35% of the time. So if you're completely blind to the global counter's position, it's about 10% chance of a "random" drop.
