Been playing Bonk 3 and Genji Tsushin Agedama lately.

Bonk 3 is a really good game due to how open it is. So many secrets. The only bad part is the music.

Genji is an easy auto scrolling run and gun with excellent graphics and cool charge attacks. You can also roll through enemies.

Youkai Douchuuki and Cadash are also great

When I was 13 I bought a duo solely for Dracula X. As I got older I started to like shmups more and more, and turbo is basically shmups: the console. But I'm also a weeaboo so I guess I'm just proving your point.

Also my duo has this weird issue where the CD audio doesn't work (the sound created by the PCE sound chip works fine) until the console has been on for some time, usually about 10-15 minutes. I know there's the cap fix for scratchy audio bit I haven't found anyone who has the same problem as I do. Anybody know if the capacitor swap would fix this or am I having some other kind of issue? I don't wanna go tearing my poor duo open if it's not gonna fix it for sure.

I'm sorry that I don't know for sure, but I've always heard that in general a cap switch on a Duo will do wonders for its reliability - especially since, as some people say, the PCB quality is higher than that of the Duo-R. It could also be an issue with the laser, but again, not too sure.

As far as console repairs, turbografxfan on ebay is known as a reliable PC Engine repairman. You could probably even shoot him a question or two via message and see what he has to say.

===

Right now I'm playing

Adventure Island (aka Wonder Boy 3)
-I've been on a big Wonder Boy kick on the Genesis, so this game is hitting all the right spots. I wish the sprites weren't recolored, but at least it's not as egregious as Bikkuriman World, redoing all of Wonder Boy in Monsterland's sprites as some line of collectible stickers, ugh.

Cotton (fantastic game)
-Had to sell a handful of games I hadn't played in a while to put together the funds for this. Worth it though, not only for cleaning out the collection but for getting in on an exciting shooter with a good, approachable difficulty. Cotton is cute! CUTE!

I've got an order of Mr Heli coming in; looking forward to some Irem charm.

Has anyone here played Alice in Wonderdream? Any opinions? I'm on the fence because platformers on the PC Engine are kind of in smaller supply vs. other genres (this problem doesn't exist on say, the Genesis/MD).

A few cards are a little iffy on my Duo-R. Sometimes I have to readjust their connections or pull them -slightly- out in order for them to work. It's annoying as it only happens on a few of them.

This list is even missing a few, notably Shoryou Sensen: War of the Dead. Now, it's not exactly a good RPG, but with savestates there is some charm to it. I kinda wish someone would translate it and the PC88 sequel.

Right now I'm playing Honey on the Road (sometimes spelled Hani/Hany). Its main conceit is that it's like SonSon where you have four planes that you navigate between, avoiding enemies and platforming.

It's not bad though your character feels a bit slippery and cannot stop quickly (leading to some cheap deaths). The variety of levels is nice, but dying after three long auto-scrolling levels, and forced to do them all over again at your last life can sap the enthusiasm out of you.

The base PC Engine (e.g. Core Grafx) can be anywhere from $40 - 80, IIRC (might be a bit off). US HuCards are unfortunately a bit much, so importing is a far safer solution. Games I've bought have typically been between $10 and $30, depending on completeness or rarity. I would stick to HuCard only for cheapness' sake.

If you want to get a CD addon, be prepared to shell out a few hundred more, and some of the games approach Saturn-level gouging. I am a bit torn on the CD addon (despite having it) because the library feels mixed in terms of quality, where it's not a clear case that the CD outperforms the library of the HuCard.

Saving from page 10.

What, in your opinion, is your favorite PC Engine platformer? Whether it be your bonks or paclands or what have you.

On HuCard from what I've played it might be Adventure Island / Dragon's Curse (aka Wonder Boy in Dragon's Trap). On CD it might be Valis 1, Shubibinman 3, or Rainbow Islands.

Adventure Island is a neat game with a lot going for it - one of the coolest being it's a HuCard that actually can save onto your internal RAM. It's not quite as refined as Wonder Boy in Monster World, or MW4, but it packs in a lot of fun exploration into its design, and is very playable in Japanese (really just need to look up an item FAQ to understand how equipment works). It's short and sweet, with a few really tough moments sprinkled in.

Valis I like perhaps more for the aesthetics than the execution. That being said it is easily the most playable and enjoyable Valis game, having the least amount of cheap deaths, enemies guarding ledges, and other such "quality" Telenet design. The biggest problem is tht if you die, bosses are not balanced for you being at not-full-power, making for some practically unwinnable encounters.

Shubi3 is fun, if not tragically easy. So much Masaya creativity in its long 4 levels with all sorts of cool bosses; it's fun to play through but such a shame that everything dies with little effort. Still, I enjoyed it.

Rainbow Islands is classic Taito fun, though maybe the Genesis port is superior. There is something appealing about using rainbows to kill swarms of increasingly assholish aggressive enemies.

Watching videos of Shubibinman 2, I think constantly hearing a high-pitched SHUBI BEEEEAM would drive me craze, especially in a system known for its over-loud sound effects. Maybe you have a different experience?

So what do people like more - the HuCard library or the CD library? Obviously, there are 10/10 games in both formats, but I flip flop on what I consider a stronger overall library. Despite some great hits on CD, it feels like the system was losing steam in the later days where you see nothing but digital comics, mahjong, and dating games.

Pic related is a surprisingly good CD game - a clone of Bubble Bobble, but with its own charm all the same (and some nice boss fights). Even more surprising is that it's good and it was -made- by Telenet. Like, what are the odds?

>So what do people like more - the HuCard library or the CD library?
CD, hands down. The voice and animated cutscenes of so many CD games are what drew me to system in the first place, and while there are HuCard games I like, it's definitely not what I'm there for. The whole sprite art animation compared to FMV (I assume that the PCE simply wasn't powerful enough to handle video decompression, but I don't know for sure) made it one of the best systems ever for showcasing that kind of aesthetic before it was quickly replaced with pre-rendered video, and we never really saw much of it again barring some sprinklings on the GBC and GBA, and still then not on the level that the PCECD did.

I know it's kind of a silly thing to praise the system for, but it's hard to argue that the PCECD doesn't have the most popful games of any system.

I'm playing the Japanese Exile: Wicked Phenomenon right now. Holy moly it suuuuucks.

This is like every bad Telenet cliche that posts like >>2743702 like to joke about.

Bland level design. Ugly sprites. But the glitches and bugs kill me. Sometimes the game freezes before loading a cutscene, forcing you to manually power off the system and restart. Sometimes text box artifacts remain onscreen after conversations.

Sometimes you hit enemies, sometimes you don't. Sometimes enemies hit the space above you and hurt you. Sometimes you hit the space above enemies and you get hurt.

Sometimes you freeze in place. Sometimes you freeze in place after changing characters. You freeze in place when you kill a boss, but if you overlap the boss during their death animation, they still hurt (and possibly kill) you.

Rumi's daggers hit whenever they feel like it. Fakil's magic attacks must be anti-attack magic because they actively avoid enemies. The level cap is 16 and you will hit it before the final dungeon. Mercifully this means standing still and mashing the attack button kills all the bosses before they usually have a chance to hurt you.

For some reason it takes up multiple slots of save data on your RAM (so it seems to me). What a joke. The lack of translated item names makes it difficult but I guess i just tank more damage.

This game is a tremendous pile of shit. Its only two saving graces are its good music and nice-looking cinemas (mostly nice, since the artist who draws Sadler seems to think that an eye wraps around half the head).

I can only imagine with bemusement how pissed off people must be to play the harder WD release (or pay for it!!!), like adding insult to injury.

All the arcade cards are the same.

Turbo Duos/Duo-Rs have the System Card 3.0 built into them, which lets them play every CD game except for the 8 or so Arcade Card-only games. These aforementioned games include a kinda lousy port of Strider (Genesis port is much better) and Sapphire which costs as much as two Duos itself. and I think some VNs?

I would look into getting a refurbished or re-capped Turbo Duo/PC Engine Duo, or a modded Pc Engine Duo-R from doujindance.

The former has a bit more durable build of PCB, so after a recapping (because the caps of vanilla Duos are notoriously prone to leaking which if left alone for a long time will damage the board) -and possibly a laser swap- it should be quite reliable.

The latter are already laser-swapped and region-modded, which makes them easier to jump into the HuCard library (CDs are region free).* The addition of a new CD laser adds some reliability but there can be occasional problems depending on the condition of the discs you use.

*Though to be honest American Turbo Chips are always more expensive and generally less desirable than a Japanese HuCard except when language is crucial to the game.

Though a point about cap leaking: this is a very, very slow process and in most cases can be easily fixed; people often get worked into a hysteria over the "dangers" of normal duos but choose the option that is the best balance of convenience and cost for you. To reiterate, your best bets:
-refurbished/modded PC Engine Duo
-doujindance PC Engine Duo-R

Strider is a bad port, though the extra level is decent

There's a Tengai Makyou fighting game.

Sapphire is great but you'll have to burn it.

Fire Pro Wrestling: Female Edition ;)

Battlefield 94 is another wrestling game

some NeoGeo fighters, also a neogeo mahjong game

Overall not worth it

thank goodness someone is here to set the record straight that Sega CDs have to be attached to Geneses and are not standalone systems no matter what fantasy marketers would have you believe.

I've been ripping CD redbook audio soundtracks to listen on my bus rides to work, and filling them as best I can with artist/year info. Would anyone be interested? =3

Currently got:
>Valis 1 - 4
>XZR: Exile
>Gotzendiener
>Fiend Hunter
>Xak I&II
>Fray in Magical Adventure
>Efera and Jiliora
>Wonder Boy in Monster Lair

If anyone has track names and artist names for these games, i would be really appreciative:

>Exile: Wicked Phenomenon
>Cotton Fantastic Night Dreams

Final Match Tennis is the best Tennis game ever, but it is almost simulator like, a game for tennis fans, and not for everybody, it is not Mario Tennis (not that Mario Tennis is bad)

"Final Match Tennis was awarded the "Best PC Engine Game in 1991" by the German computer and video games magazine Power Play on their February 1992 issue, scoring 91 out of 100 points. Video Games, another German magazine gave the game a 91 out of 100. The British magazine CVG gave the game 90 out of 100 points, complimenting the controls and the depth of the game mechanics. They also praised the game's multiplayer options and artificial intelligence. Comparing it with Kick Off II and John Madden Football, they called it a "truly stunning game" and "one of the finest computer sports simulations available on any machine.""

http://www.pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Final_Match_Tennis.htm
Final Match Tennis is by far the deepest tennis game in terms of gameplay on the PC Engine. In fact, its play controls are among the most sophisticated in a PC Engine game and in general, in a tennis game (what still counts to this very day). Don't get fooled by its simple graphics. There is everything in this game that tennis is about. Smashes, stop balls, volleys, back and forehand spins or lobs. At the top of it all, you can play it in every thinkable player combination (training, tournament, 1-4 players). By the way: in addition, its one of the best multiplayer games ever.

the only way to play both US and JPN HuCards is to have a modded system... or buy an expensive US-to-JPN converter or a JPN-to-US converter... These are usually as expensive as a modded system, so what's the point? CD games are region-free.

The overall best bet is in this post >>2750940

>>2757473
>the gameplay is 99% identical except the MD adds a warp spell, but you do not get back full HP and MP when you level up

No HP refill when you level up makes it sound like the game would be harder, because you sometimes rely on those HP fill ups... Exile was always a pretty easy game though.

The translation is pretty shoddy in the Genesis Exile ("...YIPES!"). I think the story is goofy no matter what version you play, but at least the turbo version is grammatically correct.

I beat Exile 2 and yeah it really blows. The story (even if it was in Japanese) looked like total trash - anime monsters of the week and the final villain is the California Raisin with a safe spot directly under him.
