I'm aware this is a wholly ridiculous, fanwank statement to make, but playing this game felt like a dream come true to me. It truly is every great thing you could hope for in a JRPG. It's only been a year since I beat it and already I'm getting the urge to do it all over again.

Cloud/Tifa/Barret. It just feels right to beat the game with them since they've been through it all.

Everything comes together in FF7. 10/10 music, 10/10 art design. Love the backdrops, they are so colorful and full of flavor. Every one is memorable. I even love the 3d models in the battles. The Playstation can't do good textured 3d anyway, might as well have gouraud-shaded nightmares that look they are out of some modern art sculpture. Like the characters and the story, too. The best part is how no one fully knows what's happening, and Cloud taking the place of someone else messes with all the backstory recollections until it is resolved. The way the actions of the past interact with the current time is really good and results in one of my favorite JRPG narratives.

In my top 5 jrpgs, easily. Only negative point against it is that it is really easy for a jrpg. And jrpgs are easy, so it is REALLY easy. The sort of magic this game evokes you see very rarely, in games like Phantasy Star 4 and Lunar 2.

As a side note, I first played this game on PC, since I didn't have a Playstation. It was so good that I never stopped playing even though the PC version locked up every time an FMV started, and all the minigames ran at 5 fps.

It should run fine today. I first played it in 1999, on a PC with no internet connection (no patches), and mediocre specs. Most of my problem was the disc drive not reading the FMVs properly, I had to open and close it (sometimes for a very long time) hoping it would eventually read. That would never happen today.

I have the Greatest Hits version now, though, and use my Playstation 2. I picked it up for under 10 bucks at Walmart back when they were phasing out PS1 stuff in favor of PS2.

It's not my favorite of the series, but it's still up there. The materia system made for some interesting setups if you put time into getting AP, and thought into what you wanted to do with your party. Kinda the inverse of VI, in a way. Since there, you can do a great deal with equipment options. Part of why I like VI more, but I still hold VII close to my heart.

Has anyone here ever done a playthrough where they tried to make characters correspond to Job class archetypes? I feel like it's a common run, but nobody I know personally has ever done it, other than me.

>Jenova came to earth, fucked the ancients to near extinction, the ancients sealed her away

>Shinra has Jenova cells cucked into a baby (either to find the promised land or to intentionally create a super soldier, not sure on this)
>Sephiroth is the result of this cucking, he's a big guy, but not exactly what Shinra wanted
>at some point during all this, Shinra figures out that Jenova isn't good and seals it up
>Sephiroth learns of his origins, goes bananas and goes to Jenova's remains (not sure what he was planning to do)

You can beat Emerald AND Ruby without KoTR. For Ruby, use either Dazers (stolen from boundfats near Corel) or Hades and piercing attacks. Ruby is weak to paralyze, which Hades and Dazers cause.
With Emerald, I recommend having Demi linked with Hp Absorb, and another linked with MP Absorb, and another with Counter Magic. He is weak to gravity, so you can do 9999 each time and get all your shit back. Then have Final Attack+Phoenix (or Revive) on at least two people. You'll want to be at least level 99 though. OR, you xan get Lucky 7's and rek him

>> No.2363452

>>2363210
Oh, and ditch Vincent. Due to his limit break, he is a shit-tier character, unless you get his ultimate weapon to overflow, which is 30x the horseshit of getting KotR.
Yuffie is a good choice, though. Her Conformer is the only weapon in the game that does max damage while morphing. Also, when under Confu, it does 0 damage to allies. Finally, her Doom of the Living Limit Break is one of the best in the game, under Cloud, Cid, and Barret in damage. Finally, she can do full damage from the back row. Never take her from there.
To replace Vincent, use Barret or Cid. Cid's final limit break does the highest damage next to Cloud's, he has one of two Triple materia growth weapons in the game, and his best weapon's special dealy is pretty good. Barret is a back row character, has the best natural HP and stat growth overall, and Ungrmax is pretty damn good (use Ungermax instead of his level 4, it does more damage). Barrett and Cid are pretty even, but I loke Cid more.

>> No.2363454

>>2363452
Of course, it doesn't matter TOO much when you get all the best stuff in the game who you use, but if you're NOT getting KotR and the other gold chocobo stuff, you need to have high damage output limits, which Vincent does NOT. VINCENT IS NOTHING BUT A LIABILITY WHEN HE IS TRANSFORMED. Especially if you're using one of his forms that does elemental damage. He'll sit there and continuously heal enemies if they absorbthat eleelement, and I'm sure you've gotten fucked by him being last man standing and unable to revice anyone.

I played this game a while ago, not that great, there are definitely deeper games out there and they are simply better at immersing the player in its worlds.

The character development is terrible as well, I mean look at the main character! He starts off as an annoying douche and slowly evolves into being a pussy. The black just swears a few times and SPOILER! his WHITE daughter turns out not to be his actual daughter, the baby's daddy comes back and wants to kill the black dude and the girl, and the brunette with the dolly parton sized jugs pathetically remains in the friend zone, because the main character is obsessed with some cocktease in a pink dress who can talk to the ground, and SPOILER ALERT!!! IT TALKS BACK!!!!

If you just took Ferngully, and force fed it 90's animes, threw in a couple robots, lasers and cyberpunk shit, and had just randomly chucked swords and monsters in there and hoped for the best, you would've just formulated FF7. The conception for this game and planning for it is TERRIBLE now that I think about it.

FFVII has always been a close game to my heart. It just has this... undefinable feeling to me. I can't say it's nostalgia, I beat FFVI long before I finished FFVII. But there's something about this game - whether it be the backgrounds or the music - there's something, so real, so thoughtful about the world and the characters. It touches me in a way few games can.

I came across a list dealing with the "top ten games that deal with emotional issues". FFVII ended up being the number one game on the list; in fact, the writer even titled it as /the/ emotional game.

I feel his entry on the list sums up how I feel about the game well:

"Down to number one. I'm sure you've had one of these two reactions: 'YES! NAILED IT! FFVII FTW!' or 'Dammit! This overrated game again!' The very fact that FFVII is so much discussed vehemently today testifies to its greatness. Our 'emotional game' could only be this game. No other option exists. The game is a festival of true emotions, deep characters, memorable events. Unlike other games, you'll live with this game. You'll recognize its characters as real people. It's the most human game out there.

You walk with the game's protagonist, Cloud, with his arrogance and cool attitude but grows to learn to value the importance of comradeship and his friends. You learn to respect the charismatic Sephiroth. You understand the emotional value behind the relationship between these two men, which is a complex mixture of respect and hostility. A dead character, Zack, shadows the events of game and injects a sense of loss. You are fascinated by the dark, sardonic character of Vincent. You fall in love with the sweet Aerith, and her death scene and funeral is one of the saddest most shocking scene in the history of gaming. And this is just tip of the iceberg.

FF Tactics is the ultimate pluralistic games which encompasses all ideas and philosophies. FFVII does the same with emotions, it contains all you've felt. It's a gigantic work of art."

FFT is utterly glorious and blows the piss out of FF5 thanks to its superior gameplay, addition of R/S/M slots, and storyline.

@OP -- Anyways, FF7 only "okay" in my book. The characters are too interchangeable gameplay wise and 3-person parties don't allow for as strong specialization.

The ending was garbage, and the Summon animations got old REALLY fast. If they spent more time focusing on the dystopia that was Midgard/Shinra and less chasing the token evil dude with an Oedipus complex the game would've been better off.

Then just keep shooting down Aeris for Tifa, you pretty much have to since Aeris' starting affection is stupidly high like the clingy basic bitch she is.
Then once you get to the jail in the Shinra building, just tell Tifa that you're a little bitch who can't find your way out of the cell. You can keep doing this as many times as you need to in order to secure your date with the BBC.
Happy cucking, friendo.

Am I pretentious if I say I despise this game? Even when I played it back in the day I hated it, before it became the "nightmare before Christmas" of video games. I just never got into it like other JRPGs. It started the whole "everything is esoteric and convoluted" trend in Japanese RPGs.

FFVIII is a game. It's an overrated game though. The plot is generic, the characters are original yet lack genuineness. The setting is nice. Gameplay is generic, and even with the materia system it's not exactly worth to change out specific party members at times.

It lacks strategy.

It's more pretentious to suggest it's a good game. Much in the same way it is pretentious to suggest Nightmare Before Christmas is a good movie as well.

Despising it may be a bit overboard. But both of these things aren't really very good but get held up in high undeserved regard. The definition of overrated.

That's not to say there aren't good parts about either, just as a whole they're not very cohesive nor well put together.

Usually the people who highly regard these things tap into a single element and ride that to their hearts content. Such as oh so gothic inspired and misunderstood -> therefore must be deep and relates to me, or oh so edgy and angry -> therefore so philosophical and relates to me.
I'm not suggesting the people who like these things are really bad, they're just really looking at these things through very subjective filters that resonate very deeply with them without taking in the quality of content.
Shit I used to love Karate Kid, Gremlins, and E.T. as a child and I would rewatch them over and over but I'm not going to sit here and try to pass them off as honestly good movies. They weren't. Because I can separate the concept of resonating and emotionally impacting me through shared experience with concept of plot, good writing, consistency, and direction.
It's kind of like falling in love at first sight. That's really infatuation and perhaps you base some of it on assumptions based on the persons belongings and style but ultimately you don't actually know that person. That's not really loving a person that's loving the idea of a person. That's what's going on here, people are loving the idea of FF7 and NBC and confusing it with loving the things without really getting to know them by perpetually keeping themselves in a honeymoon phase rather than sitting down and examining the flaws and problems.

I think one of the greatest things about FFVII is the way Sephiroth is introduced. Let's try to remember how it is when first discovering the game.

First of all, when you start the game, there is no Sephiroth. The main vilain is Shinra Corp, and everything points out that it's going to remain that way (although j-rpg fans know that it's a classic way to introduce the real vilain after a first sub-vilain, not everyone would expect that)

You get captured by the Shinra, you're in jail and totally failed your mission, after a very hard time getting into the HQ you can't even make it to the top.... But then Sephiroth gets in like it's nothing at all and kills the vilain, where you failed miserably, which establishes him not only as stronger than you (he succeeded where you failed) but stronger than what was the villain of the game so far, against whom you failed.

In that scene, it's a real massacre with blood everywhere and a fitting heavy, gloomy music. That's when you hear rumours about him. About how strong and evil people claim he is.

Remember, you still don't know how he even looks.

You finally discover how he looks during Cloud's first flashback; and at this point it's real genius. You fight alongside him in battle, except you're lvl1, barely do any dmg, get killed in battle, while Sephiroth wrecks the shit out of that strong dragon. You can even open the menu and see how strong he is, so the strenght comparaison with the protagonists is real genius.
Then of course we all know how the scenes in Nibeilhem during the flashbacks...

But I just wanted to point out how well told his introduction is. It's my favourite part of the game's story. I like FF8 more but in comparaison, Ultimecia's introduction, and even her being, is far from being as well developed and told.

One thing I never understood about the world of FF7. People talk about the world before Shinra took over like it wasn't that long ago, maybe 30 years or so.

BTW not specifically hating on FFVII. Almost all traditional JRPG's are shit as games. The battle systems are worthless and only seem complex when in reality 99% of the game is accomplished by just bashing X over and over again while occasionally healing. Materia, and the various systems, are just cover ups as they are nothing more than fancy menu systems designed to trick retards into think it is "complex" and "deep".

Final Fantasy VII and most JRPG's would be better off as point and click adventure games so they can focus on the only thing the designers are remotely decent at...the music and story.

And to be honest even the story isn't great but I'll give it a pass as I understand the appeal to young kids who had never seen anything like it at the time.

Yes, surviving is not an issue unless you're speed running it, so JRPGs usually are not 'difficult' games. Although they usually will squeeze you on boss fights unless you are an obsessive optimizer or just overlevelled.

The drama in FFVII ranges from mediocre to pretty good but the drama is not the selling point. It is the film noir-like atmosphere of Midgar that sold me on the game. No wonder Square originally wanted to make FFVII a hardboiled detective story.

As for the battle system, yeah, it's primitive. In FFVII case it could have been pretty strategic had they explored the potential of combining materia.

I disagree with you that

I absolutely adore that world. I just love that kind of universe. That art style, the setting, the character designs, the monster designs, everything is just so good. Part of it is that it's the only FF game heavily inspired by anime, and it is inspired by some of the best anime ever. This was the time of cyberpunk, and god damn I LOVE cyberpunk cities.

Something I noticed while watching previews and demos for FF15. I didn't care at all. All the characters looked really bland. And I didn't care about what was over the hill. I didn't care about what the cities looked like. In FF7, I want to explore more of it. I want to get another game just to explore it more.

And here's something that even Square gets wrong about FF7's appeal. Every sequel has a grittier, realistic character designs. That's not it. FF7 is an anime. It's an anime world with anime characters. In any sequel, they should retain that art style.

Interesting observation:

1. The bigger character models make very little difference. The camera is so far away from most of them it doesn't make much difference.

Yes. FFVII is shit compared to Septerra Core.

I mean, the worst part of SC was
>horrible dungeon design
>lots of trash mob fighting

FFVII had both of those too but it also had worse characters, worse writing and worse setting.

sup guys. i had my third playthrough of ff7 last year after beating it in 2000 and then again in 2007 or so.

one thing i really noted for the first time for some reason was how flirtatious and playful and cheeky aeris was. she's not meek at all. i'm a tifa man but that playthrough really re-established my appreciation for her character.

No, I was imagining her low-poly model.

Well considering SC ripped off FFVII in the first place, it doesn't really count.

And before you ask no, I don't think FF7 is the greatest game ever as there are plenty of games which are far superior to FFVII i.e Chrono Trigger and Breath of Fire 4 which aren't piss-poor FF7 derivatives.

To be fair, just about every RPG at the time took something from VII in some way due to it's sales.

Except it didn't?

SC didn't rip off FF VII any more than it ripped off any other JRPG with that type of combat. It's plot and setting is nowhere near as retarded as FF VII's.

If anything, SC's combat is superior as well, since the game pauses when you select a character who can do an action.

That's what they became. But Team Rocket didn't murder hundreds.

You can change that setting in FFVII's options. And SC had tedious as fuck combat, much worse than FFVII's (or that of any other JRPG barring FFXIII and Ni No Kuni)

It only gets tedious late game, for the first 50% of the game it is much faster than FF VII.

I never found FFVII's combat tedious, probably due to the low challenge level.

I haven't played it but from what I've heard it plays like a WRPG despite manga-style graphics, right? Does it have a high-res patch like Planescape?

All wapanese games are linear.

At least with Septerra you can do a bit free will exploring once you get your own ship.

Worlds in JRPGs never made any sense, but it's fun to imagine what the writers left out. My interpretation of FF7's world before Shinra took over is it was some sort of post-peak-oil, post-apocalyptic libertarian society. This is evidenced by the lack of public infrastructure and large cities in most of the world, sort of like in Mad Max. Whatever infrastructure that existed before was destroyed through the ravages of time. Amongst these mostly self-sufficient, independent towns or city states, one eventually became powerful. This city state is named Shinra. It discovered Mako energy and the technology to harness its power. With the vast wealth gained from its energy business, Shinra was able to obtain a large military force and conquer the whole world with it.

FF7 they had no idea what the fuck they were doing and had to learn the PS1's quirks as they went.

FF8 looks the way it does because of what they learned making FF7.

So Final Fantasy VII was the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare of its time?

>> No.2385747

>>2385713
Yes. They were both enjoyable but vastly overrated games, both represent the jumping of the proverbial shark by their respective series, and both are widely hated by hipsters and contrarians not because of the games themselves but what grew out of them since their release (the frequently rabid and obnoxious fanbases, the impact they had on the industry for better or worse, the publishers milking them for all their worth and then some etc.)
