Who designed this font? And why was it visible everywhere during the 80's and early 90's?

>> No.2157361

Probably part of some development kit.

>> No.2157384

earliest instance i've seen her was on galaga or pacman, whatever came first

I find dev kit fonts fascinating, wish there was more info on it

searching 'console dev kit fonts' returns useless stuff

I want to know if Megadrive had a default font

Pac-Man, obviously. Galaxian came before Galaga.

>> No.2157479

I can't claim to know a whole lot about it, but my suspicion is that, since there were far fewer fonts at that time and they were painfully difficult to make for electronic use, that font was probably adopted as the standard for arcade games out of limited options.

Could've been because it was offered in formats that were most compatible with the hardware arcades used, could've been because someone got in on some arcade dev racket, who knows.

Theyre called 5x5 pixel fonts. Its not just a single type family its a way to emulate different kinds of typefaces in a 5x5 pixel format.

If it's not a man or a woman, you must use the pronoun "it". It applies to chairs, dogs, and even fonts.

I always thought it was some sort of coincidence, like this was the best they could do with limited pixels, so every game looked like it had the same font.

Fonts can identify as her/his/xir or whatever they want without catering to your bigoted gender binary system.

The OP font is 8x8

That's why there are fonts like these, they're readable at very low resolutions.

Basically, the size you wanted your text determines what font you use at low resolutions since there's not much room for variety.

>> No.2158127

I'd guess that it's just from some really cheap and widely used character set rom.
Since then it's been copied pretty much everywhere.

I imagine that can lead to confusing conversations though, you'd have to constantly refer back to the subject everytime to say their version of "it" or whatever it is.

>> No.2159042

>>2158914
As a native French speaker, I can tell you it's easy for us to learn which pronoun applies to which item/concept.
As children, as far as we know this is the only way to do things, so it makes sense.
When I found out English speakers only use "it" when talking about anything that's not a person, I thought it was genius. It's so simple and convenient.
Translating pronouns from English to French can be a giant pain in the ass, while French to English is easy.

In other words, I can see how confusing and needless it might seem to non-native speakers. Even we get it wrong sometimes.

While spoken, he/she/it sound exactly the same. While written, they are different (他/她/它), but while most words that had a gender variation lost said variation over time, he/she/it actually remained (the difference being noticable only when written).

>>2159016
It's usually clear, but the subject does come back a lot, as you said.
