Happy 1st Birthday /vr/. Hard to believe it's been a whole year, huh?

Let's celebrate by amassing all the /vr/ games we can think of involving birthdays or cakes at any significant point of the game.

First one off the top of my head is Peach's Birthday Cake, one of the low-difficulty maps from Mario Party.

Thank you /vr/ for hooking me up with Planescape: Torment, one of the most immersive (and wordy) RPGs I've had the pleasure of playing. I've also gotten into playing PC Engine after frequenting this board, there's a lot of good entertainment to be had from NEC's console.

Also thoroughly enjoyed all the year's worth of nerd rage over the DKC series, Aladdin and emulators.

Princess Maker series. You start at her tenth birthday and the game ends when she turns 18. Every year you can give her a birthday present and new jobs will become available.
If you have a good relationship you will get a cake for your own birthday.

It's one of the few boards on 4chan worth vising. Luckily, due to the niche nature of retro games, it'll probably stay that way, but look what happened to /a/...

It's incredible how much difference there is in quality between v and vr.

On the topic of /vr/ birthdays and cakes:
There's lots of games which incorporate birthdays as a rite of passage thing like in RPGs where you get your first sword and stuff like that, but not so much as a traditional western birthday. Afaik harvest moon games have birthdays and birthday presents.

I know Super Mario 64 had a delicious looking cake.

I'm going to be that one dick that shits on everyone's parade. Don't get me wrong, /vr/ is a great board and I'm not planning on leaving any time soon because of it. But as someone who came from a non vidya related board /k/, there's a lot of shit-flinging that goes on around here. The overall quality has had a noticeable decline since it's creation, and is on a fast track to being a circle jerk of pseudo-nostalgia. Lot's of anon's on /vr/ have that "modern games are all pay to win sports and COD" mentality, as if older games didnt have shit titles and shovelware.
It's still nowhere near as bad as /v/, and is definitely the best vidya related board on 4chan. But it's far from the best, or nicest overall.
Think back to the Dreamcast shitfest for example, for a solid month or so it seemed like every thread turned into people arguing over how the rules should be applied to it. And look at where we are now, 2 threads. It's like the apocalypse is upon us, a whole 2 threads about the Dreamcast are going to destroy /vr/, lookout everyone!
There are more threads right now about beta/unreleased stuff than there DC threads. Hell, we almost have more threads about fucking bubble bobble games than that.
And yet I KNOW someone is going to reply to me saying that the DC STILL shouldn't be allowed. Actually I bet someone will reply saying even 5th gen stuff shouldn't be allowed.
And dont get me started on that guy that shitposts in every thread that has "general" in the title. Or the hyperkin conspiricists for that matter.

Are you trying to say /k/ doesn't have shit-flinging? It's just a bunch of wannabe commandos crying about people who come on the board only owning a pistol or two.

This board hasn't gotten better or declined since it started, it's just discussion of retro games. It does a good job of doing just that while keeping out cancer and shit-posting.

>> No.1478526

>>1478490

Nothing on this board is worth complaining about unless it's not a retro video game.

I can see why CRTs are allowed, but not why "internet nostalgia" is.

Frankly, what I don't understand is this: the board was established in 2013, and we arbitrarily picked 1999 as out cutoff point. Here we are a year later, so should we not move the cutoff up a year? And yes, I know that would allow PS2 discussion - which is now 14 years old.

>I can see why CRTs are allowed, but not why "internet nostalgia" is.
I wasn't saying CRT threads (or CRT's) are bad if thats what you're implying. And I can understand old internet threads as long as they pertain to /vr/ related sites, which they more or less do.
>arbitrarily picked 1999 as out cutoff point
>And yes, I know that would allow PS2 discussion
And there's the reason for 1999. Few people think of xbox/ps2/gamecube as retro.
GBA would probably be allowed had the ps2 not come out before it, because of how it's basically a portable SNES. But unfortunately doing so would create a gap, confusing people even more, and creating a Dreamcast 2: Playstation boogaloo.
Honestly, I can see a yearly increase for PC games, but not for consoles, given the PS2's extremely long life. At least not until 2015 or so.

Personally I will label a console 'retro' if it has not seen an official release (game store release or released by official commercial groups) in at least 5-6 years, which is when the main stores remove all their content from the shelves overall. Even though the Dreamcast was released not long before the PS2, I don't consider the PS2 'retro' yet because they are still very active in the official retail market, unlike the DC.

/vr/ came into existence a week after the girl i thought i was going to marry dumped me out of nowhere. i also was basically laid off a week after that, going from 60 hours a week to 8. /vr/helped me kill time that if otherwise hadn't been occupied would probably have ended with a gun in my mouth. Now I've got a better job and i don't care anymore about things that happened to me i still come here all the time. even weeks i don't have time to play games i still lurk and post. this board has the best community of any board I've ever been involved with. it's own odd sense of humor and family, being that this is an odd niche that most people don't get or pretend to get because in their minds it makes them look cool. Even heated threads don't usually result in "you're a retarded autistic faggot virgin shitposting troll" aside from a few here there. However you still have the issue that people would be able to talk about Xbox versions of games, but not ps2 versions. Which would just end up causing a lot of frustration and butthurt when an anon's thread gets deleted for using the wrong cover.
Personally, I would add to your definition
>and is not backwards compatible with modern systems
