Bring your repair, mod, and other technical questions here!

http://retroconsoles.wikia.com

RCW continues to grow, but there is still much to be done. You can help by adding content to the wiki or making requests and asking questions in this thread.

What the wiki needs:
+ Repair and mod guides
+ Motherboard pics and component lists (chips, capacitors, resistors, etc.)
+ Info about controllers and accessories
+ General information
+ Retro computer info
+ Programming/homebrew articles
+ Anything you can think of that fits in

Let's continue, shall we?

I've got an MM3 modchip that works with any Playstation coming in the mail soon, and I was planning on putting up an installation guide when it arrives. It cost $4 (+$5 shipping) from Eurasia. I tried to post a link, but it made 4chan think my post was spam. Just google "mm3 modchip" and it's the first result.

It looks like it requires some soldering, but from the pictures I've seen none of it looks too difficult.

I'm getting a Saturn modchip as well, and I'll put up a guide for that when I get it, too.

Not much point; there are 5-6 different type of units/drives and 1-2 dozen different chips with varying levels of compatibility.

To the guy who wanted motherboard pics for his 75xx Playstation, are you sure it's the motherboard you wanted pics of and not the power supply? I opened up my 7501 PS1 and the motherboard only had surface-mount resistors. If you lost one of those, then you're probably fucked. If you did mean the motherboard, which part of it do you need a close-up pic of? Part of my board is hidden by an RF shield soldered to the board, which is why I didn't bother taking pictures.

The dualshock 2 and 3 have pressure-sensitive buttons, and if you look at the contact pads, you'll notice they're dome-shaped rather than flat. I don't know if it's the shape of the contact pads that makes them pressure-sensitive, but it would make sense since more pressure on the button would mean more contact surface area which could affect the resistance. Using flat contact pad would still work in that case, but you might lose the pressure sensitivity. It's probably not a big deal though since the only games I've played that made use of the pressure sensitivity (at least in a way that mattered) are Metal Gear Solid 2 - 4.

Okay, so, the modchip for my Playstation came in the mail today, and I fucked up the installation.

I had two PS1's to choose from: a 75xx and a 9xxx model, and I chose the 9xxx because the 75xx had an RF shield soldered to the motherboard that I would have to remove. What I did not take into consideration was that the 9xxx model required me to solder directly onto two surface mounted capacitors, whereas the 75xx did not.. Long story short, I accidentally de-soldered one of the capacitors. I got the capacitor back into place, and the PS1 still turns on, but it violently spins discs in the wrong direction. I'm going to attempt to mod the other Playstation tomorrow.

Three-pin jacks will typically short two of the pins if there is nothing plugged in - for stuff like optional AC adapters putting the batteries in-circuit when you unplug them.

It should be fairly obvious which pins are which. Two of them are probably grounded and one is Vcc. The grounded pins will go to a big thick trace that goes everywhere and covers lots of the board surface area.

That resistor is unrelated, so don't worry (It goes to a backlight). The two wires go from the left and right outputs of the potentiometer to the left and right leads on the headphone jack and don't touch the chip at all (they shouldn't because that chip isn't even remotely related to audio, it's SRAM for the wave channel and bootrom).

It really SHOULDN'T have an effect on the speaker. There IS a modification to add another amplifier chip specifically for the speaker in a DMG, but there's no room for it in the pocket so I don't think it's possible.

There's rumors that the PSOne outputs Y/Pb/Pr (component) while the original PSX outputs RGB, but I haven't been able to confirm this anywhere.

And yes, the MM3 bypasses region locks. You need to buy the right one for your console, though.

No.

I am only using the backlight panel for an original gameboy, it wont work on a GBC, GBA since they use different screens.

Like the MM3 USA for a US Playstation?

Or is there more to it?

GBA cannot be backlit unless you can find the screen from the second GBA SP and the ribbon cable adapter.

Are both hard to find? I mean that guy up in the thread said you can get them from china or some shit.

And what about the first Game Boy? Whats needed to back light that?

Don't get a battery powered one. If it doesn't come with cutting wheels, get some.

But if you want to be ghetto about it, you can just rip the tabs out with some needle nose pliers.

But all these sites seem cool. I just wish they'd get some of their products back in. I'd love to get a snow back light screen for my GB and a new screen protector.

Yes, developing. Wow people are still making new bits for the gameboy. Unbelievable, I know.

>> No.1099586

The ones they offer now are separate diy-install modules where you have to risk destroying the screen, whereas these will eventually be drop in replacements for the entire front board with zero destruction risk.

If that's true. (Talking about the original game boy right?)

Also, I wonder when www.nonfinite.org is going to have the GBA back light kits in. Anyone got any information when that might be?

Fuck, they're out of snow? I wanted snow as well. The thing has godly contrast.

It's get Sapphire as a replacement since they're also out of emerald or whatever the hell they call green.. It looks nice while not being too showoff-y, plus it's easy in the eyes.

It sucks because I tried to backlight one of mine and fucked up in a really annoying way.

Nevermind. Green is in stock here (it also has pretty good contrast). This is the model I originally got, and it looked great disregarding my fucked up screen.

I THINK the only difference is just another LED, and that they offer a specific resistor, but you can use an LED resistance calculator to see what you need, like so.
