I gotta at least give the Shadow Warrior mapping kit a look to see how useable it is. What I really liked about Shadow Warrior is how it and Duke made usage out of cheesy cliches of their respective parodied subjects but played it straight enough that it managed to keep an enjoyable experience even if you ignore the satire and take it at face value.

That said some of those levels / key hunts sucked ass.

I gotta play that. I played all the Quack episodes when the remaster came out and xpacks too but not the nightdive added ones. I will probably enjoy dimension of the machine a lot since I really scourge of armagon.

How does it lend itself to be played without mid level saves? And what should be a good difficulty level to pick for it if I completed the base game on hard?

I'm trying to muster up energy to play through the Quake 2 remaster's expansion packs and then maybe Q64 just so I can have all the steam cheevos.

Then playing Ion Fury : Aftershock and Dark Forces.

My backlog is pretty much all modding work for Doom 2. I would like to finish one project this year, but I have a lot of work to do before I get there. Right now the list looks like this:

>Finish GMOTA
>Take a month off
>Combined_Arms update
>Roland
>Take a break
>Relic
>Finish Combined_Arms

I should look into playing more FPS games rather than just modding them all the damn time.

They're not by Nightdive, Machine Games made them, the guys who made all Wolfenstein games from The New Order onwards.
Played them on hard with mid-saves. It's more difficult then Q or MP1, but not that much. Almost all levels are sub-20 minutes with all secrets hunting, so even if you die it's not the end of the Earth.

what are your favorite weapon mods/wads/pk3 that you use for other mods/maps?

I used to use Brutal Doom Lite but lately I've been using Quick Charge which is an offshoot of Super Charge. I like it because it ONLY changes weapons and I can use it with voxel doom and other mods without worrying it'll fuck with anything else.

I feel HR1 had much stronger highs than 2 when it came to the good maps. Almost all of the remakes in 2 were inferior.

As someone who prefers more ambient tracks like Suspense, Sign of Evil, The Demons from Adrian's Pen and the Hodges PSX/D64 soundtracks, I would say that Doom covers a wide palette of tones and moods and what "fits Doom" is highly subjective.

For sure, I tend to prefer the more ambient tracks as well actually, and I agree that it is indeed highly subjective. I guess what I mean is that to my ears custom midis with a few exceptions don’t come close to either the harder “metal” stuff from Doom, or the atmospheric.

You put the map and assets in the folder of the mod you want to play it with, but it’s very likely to be messed up if you’re not playing a vanilla map or something intended for a different mod. The “Episode Enyo” mod used Alkaline as a base and supports a chunk of its maps, but it doesn’t support all the custom Alkaline enemies.
I’ve also tried playing Copper-based maps through Reliquary, though the latter hasn’t been updated in forever.

I agree, although vanilla Doom is compatible with a wide range of tones I don’t think all midis fit it that well. Like BTSX music is great, but if pay attention to how it scores demon murder it doesn’t work.

Its partly why stuart rynn frustrates me. Great music, phenomenal even. But its not for Doom.

Funnily enough, that's how it's been for me not that long ago (DOOM Eternal was recent exception to that). If I'm playing the game, I'm sticking to it specifically. Nowadays it's been Stardew Valley and some random game with Heroes of the Storm regaining my attention every once in a while.

Finished the Watchtowers of episode 2 Evantide Wastes in Wrath, 3/5 down. Same shit, lack of enemy variety, great looking levels, etc. They introduced a shield bearing enemy that floats, and any enemy caught in its field is protected and you have to enter the field to kill the enemy itself, or the enemies under its protection. It's fine. It's not offensive. That's the most I can say about this enemy.

I think there should be more mancubus clones in video games; the scrapjack in modern Serious Sam games, the Zumbul in Serious Sam TSE, and now this Oppressor in Wrath are really fun to fight, just like the original big guy. Quake needs a mancubus.

The games that don't have enough mods / maps are usually that way for a reason.
It's not that those games are bad but usually it's a question of complexity of the mapping tools and whether the juice is worth the squeeze.

And besides the general tools issue, most games just have very... different appeal in their gameplay in a sense. Doom is the gold standard for attracting mappers because while you CAN make cool and functional looking techbases and city environment brimming with doomcute and sector toilets, it's rarely a requirement and it's usually often enough to have geometry that results in good synergy with the best rounded monster menagerie a first person shooter mapper could ask for.

Whileas in Ion Fury the bar for the maps is insanely high, they're pretty much all insanely detailed lived-in spaces with a lot of unique and sovl easter eggs / references, oft with sprites specifically made for them.

I find the Shadow Warrior project admirable, hopefully it will amount to at least something fun. Gonna have to look up a mapping tut for mapster 32 if there's anything cool I could cook up.

Spent last night playing through Func Map Jam 6 - Fire and Brimstone. It's short and simple but I actually like that - I don't mind a nice evening smashing through a couple 15 minute levels each with an interesting nice twist on the aesthetic. And the theme definitely plays into Quake's strengths.

Anyone know a good source port for Blood that has ammo staying in co-op? Me and my homies tried Fresh Supply but we kept losing our ammo and weapon supplies with each death, and it was getting pretty heated near the end. I want to do Death Wish with them, but every time I suggest Blood they talk about having no ammo and how it ruined the experience for them.

It's actually remembered better today than it was received back in the day I feel. People almost always cite the atmosphere in it which is really good or the graphics.

People's complaints even today among the doomers I've talked to tend to be either the darkness or the fact that it's not really a ''Doom'' game.

However, the conversation gets completely bogged down to those aspects instead of the bigger elephant in the room which is that the gunplay lacks satisfying feedback. Or much feedback at all. Half Life 2's guns might've sounded really gay even in comparison to Doom 3 but at leadt the enemies acknowledged being shot even before their HP hit zero. It's really aggravating to shoot an enemy only for them to not have any sort of pain flinch and they just continue shooting until either you or they die. Gun sounds are pathetic especially on the assault rifle and the model's design is not great imho either.

Game looks still great and I love the techy yet in some ways unrefined and workplacey feel of the Doom 3 UAC facility. When I am stuck somewhere bored and I cannot access a smart device to watch youtube or post on 4chan, I start daydreaming of my OC Doom marines in Doom 3 UAC facility style in their workdays at computer terminals, security checkpoints, going to gym and recreation afterwards etc.

One of my PCs' backgrounds and currently my ps4's background is a screenshot of an atmospheric location of Doom 3 with something else I find pleasant to look at edited in.

So I dig the vibe of Doom 3 but the gunplay is lame due to the poor feedback which is a shame.

I do like the game though it is obviously flawed. I have wondered before how the game may have turned out had it been a SS clone instead is all. Considering they went for a horror shooter game with tight corridors it probably would have been a lot better off if it was a clone.
>>10807884
>It's actually remembered better today than it was received back in the day I feel.
I'm not so sure. Seems like its still a mixed bag of reception to me. I think some definitely warmed up to liking it more while others never really changed their opinion on disliking it. To me its most primary flaw anyways is that the shooting combat doesn't feel as devastating or impactful as it should.

>> No.10807931

>>10807905
>shooting combat doesn't feel as devastating
I think only literally the civilian zombies react / flinch when shot. The rest will tank hits until they die and when they DO die they just poof away. Okay it looks cool when they sizzle in that firey effect back to Hell but.. man that game feels so damn static in your interaction with the environment that combat is the thing I look forward to the least.

I found it actually really spooky in a good way when those audio logs and emails sound like people beimg frustrated with normal relatable workplace frustrations coupled with some spookier relorts like machines malfunctioning or inexplicably turning off even when disconnected from power etc. I LOVE THAT. I love that vibe, I love the idea of working at UAC and things being at the same time... everyday work but with some unsettling spooky as a condiment.

Quake 2 64 is so good bros... I quite like the small simplified maps and the linear campaign with simple objectives. The maps look and play like Quake 1 maps with Quake 2 textures and enemies. There are no long slogs of war of attrition or backtracking just rooms with enemies to pew pew as it should be. There is no going back to the expansion packs now.

A mixed bag from the really early days of the community, talent ranging from quite good to not very good at all.

There's no one across the board consensus on TNT Evilution by itself, I like a lot of it, and so do many, but there's a lot who do not like TNT at all, and there's sincerely a lot to dislike.
In my opinion, about 50% to 60% range between "It's decent for its time." to "This is REALLY good!" but then the rest is either "This is pretty dull." to "This is inexcusably fucking bad." I am cutting TNT some undeserved bit of slack because of nostalgia, there's things in it I would not tolerate from modern works, but that's old games you grew up with.
Some say it stops holding up about half way and then the third act falls apart, some say only the first third has anything good to offer.

What a lot of people really agree on though is that whether or not they like TNT, it manages to capture a bit of a style, in large parts thanks to its cool new music which really sets a lot of good tone. People have taken inspiration from its visuals and used it for stronger works and 'sequels,' like TNT Revilution, TNT Devilution, and THT Threnody, to name just some. Very good stuff worth checking out if you liked TNT.
Another aspect of TNT which is celebrated is that The Plutonia Experiment exists because of it, brothers Dario & Milo had creative differences with the rest of the team and were dissatisfied with the direction of TNT, feeling creatively stifled, so they took a sample set of 8 maps, a few rejected from TNT, others which they had noodled away on on the side, and pitched it to iD Software. iD thought it was cool as fuck and asked if they could turn it into a complete 32 level set before the Final Doom deadline, so that it could be sold as a double bundle with TNT, 32+32, and the Casalis agreed. Working their ass off for a few months, they create what's commonly regarded as Final Doom's strongest and most influential half.

Something I've cooked up and got planned after talking with the boys during a few Sunday Night Shitshows. TL;DR I wanna make something lower key and simpler compared to the bullshit I do. Roland's just gonna be a pretty straight forward weapon mod but altfire'll make you throw a few punches before swinging a sword that has lifesteal, and your pistol will be an explosive energy magnum that recharges when holstered.

Relic's gonna be a continuation of that idea with the same character and a few other things, but that one will have essentially a devil trigger gauge that'll effectively tome of power your weapons.

Also, the music in arwop is played by some ambient entity, so it's not overriding quake music, and it doesn't react to music volume setting. Weird because other mods by him like Something wicked and Nyarlathotep have actual music replacements.
Recently replayed arwop on hard and shotgun start and I don't think it's designed for that, on some maps I couldn't get all weapons, even with all secrets. I wish more quake maps would use the Tome of Power - I don't think vanilla quake, the expansion packs or quoth/ad ever conceived a powerup as satisfying and creative as that one.

>I'm thinking maybe the open environments make it hard to design levels
You just need some creativity and artistic license to make it work like other FPSes - no one said the whole game has to take place in a town with small buildings. You could make up level themes and then make 1-2 levels for each one - a classic wild west town with a saloon/prison/bank to start the game, a trip to the mountains similar to the canyon level in douk3d(it is an open environment, but not that bad), a gold mine which would allow for a lot of closed caves and tunnels, a long ass train like in Blood, anything else you'd come up with, and then at the end of the game you'd come back to the town.
>>10811717
>lack of weapon variety
Same thing, you need to not take the setting too seriously and then you can make a lot more shit up:
>A knife, lasso maybe?
>classic revolver, you can akimbo it later
>a bow and arrow looted from the indians
>rifle for shotgun replacement, some historically inaccurate portable gatling gun as a chaingun replacement
>classic cannon? as a rocket launcher
>fire water for molotov or dynamite from blood as a tossable explosive
>optionally some goofy ass high scifi plasma weapon(put it in some sort of John Carter/Cowboys & aliens secret encounter)
>there's room for a lot more things, just use your imagination
Basically if you want to make it fun you have to forgo historical accuracy - you can add some arcanum style more advanced machinery even - just don't overdo it with steampunk because a lot of that genre is utter sovlless faggotry in style of "machine from modern times, but it's brass/wooden and has a cog randomly placed somewhere"

Well they got the Call of Juarez stuff, Outlaws, Darkwatch, more recently Blood West, Hangman's Rope and some lesser known games like Dead Man's hand etc. I feel like third person shooter is a more popular kinda genre because horse riding in first person is clunky af and if you're doing an old west game and don't include horses then wtf you doing mayn.

More recently the anti-fun political brigade has also made it a minefield for utilizing anything involving native americans in such games unless the portrayal is ''right'' aka you have to be sweet baby inc approved which you know you don't HAVE to do but if you can't use native american mythos and stuff then that's another big aspect you can't do anything with which is a big loss.

But yeah the Ol' West has a fuckton of possibilities and setpieces :
>ye olde main street with dusty road and saloon, maybe burlesque theater
>train level where you battle on board a train
>farms / ranches
>wooden military forts with cannon
>stagecoach gunner level
>steamboat level
>mine level with minecart rides
>dusty mexican military forts
>pueblos
>sniper section where you have to save someone at the gallows from being hanged

There are also a lot of different archetypes and motiovations to play with like gold rush, maybe cattle barons muscling small holders, the army either mexican us or both being involved, former civil war soldiers doing stuff etc.

Like half of all the conventional guns in that game are cowboy style ones, single action revolvers, lever action rifles and shotguns, and there's dozens of cowboy hats.

Most of them are held back by some gimmick like speedmapping, space, or sector art and the ones where the mappers have full freedom have the same flaws most community projects do where they have shitty maps that drag the overall experience down, even Ad Mortem. In the world of Doom WADs /vr/ community projects are pretty mid, people are just gonna gravitate towards the top shelf stuff.

The plan is primary fire will launch explosive shells with dropoff, using the same ammo as the hand cannon, but they'll be a little less effective compared to the hand cannon. Alt fire will emit a pulse that punts enemies away and parry projectiles.

>Take the weird segmented piercing laser thing and make it into a proper hitscan railgun that leaves a lingering trail that damages enemies
>Replace the Ruby Lash with that cracked out multi target stunlock/damage clusterfuck projectile I made for Telos in Combined_Arms Gaiden, webm related
>Keep the mega shotgun but make it hitscan
>Keep the hyperburst attack but make it shoot a few extra times per volley

Got the urge to play Hexen again, except now because of Steam's NUH-UH attitude to divorcing themselves from chrome, i've been using Linux Mint for a while and everything involving the operating system works fine.
> Ultimate Doom Builder doesn't support Linux

Ok
> New map, Hexen setup; Build something shitty, just a box
> GZDoom was installed through the software manager download page (flatpak)
> GZDoom doesn't recognize the external wad folder
> Attempt to fiddle-fuck with permissions and other shit involving flatpak
2 hours
> Give up and copy/paste wads into the directory that the SALTY CHICKEN demands i do
> Attempt to test map but Slade3 doesn't permit access to the pk3 in GZDoom's folder because Slade3 expects a windows directory, not a linux one
> Despite being "supported" for linux, Slade3 shits itself...
3 hours
> Thinking about killing as i struggle with the folders, ini files, text editing, and the ghost of some shithead who thinks they can support linux in their software without testing if what they've done actually fucking works or not
4 hours
> Shittube videos
> Jewgle misinformation searches
> Dead forum threads from the last decade (or two)
> ANYTHING from anywhere that could solve these launch problems
12 hours
> Finally discover Eureka map editor
> Zandronum was installed as a flatpak from the software manager, too
> Both able to recognize external wads in folders anywhere and open them without problem.
> The Hexen.wad loads and the pwad launches and Map01 is what i made

The final testicle-kicker is that Eureka has no internal ACS support like Slade3 does, Slade3 corrupts Eureka maps i load/save in it, and Zandronum has horrible screen tearing that makes it look diagonal on quick turns.
tl;dr
Fucking nightmare.

Took a lot of polishing to get right. It's only clunky and fumble-prone if you panic or try to do it mid-combat under stress. Requires some practice at the range. But it feels satisfying as fuck once you get the hang of it, I can tell you that much, as long as you learn to do calculated and calm movements instead of frantic swinging of the computer mouse. If it's any future consolation, all features and reworks are done because something feels lackluster and could be better, rather than because "it'd be cool if". If something is not going to be a net improvement, it's not getting added to master. The idea is to make the mod better with each update, not worse. If it starts getting worse, it's time to stop and move on to something else.

NotBlood dev here. If by 'perfect' you mean demo compatible then it's perfect. You don't have to take my word, run the -validate argument and it'll chew through 11+ hours of demos, and compare the position, random seed and health of player values captured from the original DOS binary.
BloodGDX fails a few of these demos as there is some current inaccurate behavior with the tiny Caleb's swimming logic and hands.

It's kind of fascinating how Wolf3D mapping ended up taking more from Tom Hall's book than Romero's. Even the big name cream of the crop mods tend towards big meandering levels full of dead ends and copypasted rooms that only serve to make the space more "real", and when they want to do difficulty they typically do it E2/E4/E6 style with meat walls that you whittle down at chokepoints and reflex checks with mutants/officers around corners rather than Romero's preference for swarming the player from multiple directions with the full roster in play. Very strange to see coming from Doom where Romero's flow-focused design has such dominance.

Good question. Potentially Take Two might hope on finally being able to get some returns on Duke considering the money they spent on DNF, which Randy embezzled from them, but that depends on if they think he's still bankable.

Wolfenstein 3D has very limited stock gameplay, which is why it goes towards meandering mazes eventually. IMO the good Wolf mods all modify the gameplay by revamping or adding enemy types and weapons, because iD Software themselves already scraped the bottom of the barrel with the Nocturnal Missions.

>>10814970
DN3D is still moody as hell with Duke's chatter, and he's part of the game's feel and character. His brash and extreme personality is the little golden lining of levity which perfectly contrasts the otherwise gloomy and dark world of the game, and in Caribbean he compliments the much more cheerful and silly air of those levels.

I don't agree. Romero was really getting starting on the style he'd later use in Doom, creating much more exciting gameplay than Tom's mazes. It's just odd to me how the community seemingly completely ignored this development and kept making maximum size Spear of Destiny slogs and E2/E6 trial and error sadism. It's like if Final Doom came out exactly as it is but for some reason TNT was the one everyone took inspiration from while Plutonia got shafted.

It took longer than expected, but here's another set of 1994 maps bugfixed and made standalone
https://litter.catbox.moe/0ggyd7.pk3

The Innocent Crew's Slaughter Until Death and The Evil Unleashed (and all the others so far) in an easy to use package for wadsmoosh, including TEU's unique floating exit skull that UDB realy doesn't want to display for some reason. With this the .pk3 is at 62 maps, but there are still more 1994 wads that deserve a revisit in 2024. Next stop will most likely be another "Master Level" like episode focused on smaller mapsets

Totenkopf SDL is another great one, it expands and builds up the gameplay, while also putting a lot of work into detailing the world to make it feel more real and lived in.
Also, you can dual wield pistols and SMGs, which is cool. Something which you might only find in secrets is a Schnellfeuer machinepistol, and if you find two such secrets then you can dual wield those, which would be ridiculously dangerous IRL, but here it's just badass.
