Why do so many people in /hhg/ hate Android so much? It's the most supported OS with the most native ports outside of full fledged handheld PCs, it has multiple frontends that make it as simple to pick up and play as any linux based device, and you get access to the app store which means a bunch of potential features.

Is there any real downsides beyond not wanting to take the couple hours out of your day to fully configure it one time?

I own a miyoo with onion and an Odin 2 with a nicely setup front end, so I'll give my opinion. First of all, the support android has is the frustrating part, it is the only way to play many emulators and games. You have no choice but to use android. The front ends feels like a cope when compared to a proper custom os. Onion os feels like an actual console, rather than just a front end. The facade of the front end is often broken, exiting a game will kick you back to the emulator list of games instead of the home screen list of games. Or a game will crash and put you back to the default launcher. Swiping around on the screen for quick settings and navigation bar is awkward. It just doesn't work like or feel like a console. It feels like a phone with a front end. Simple as that. I love android, but it isn't a console experience.

Then in the osd I selected reset and then after that whenever I boot into gb mode with a game inside, it would just show the screen all jumbled and be completely unresponsive. It was still booting fine on gbc mode. I just selected reset again in the osd and it seems to have fixed itself. So word of warning, don't select Reset in the osd.

It has the same chip as the rgb10 max 3 which indeed benches on paper a little better than the h700 in the rg35XX+, but in reality they get the exact same framerate in games. Maybe a 1 or 2 frame difference max. The chip in Smart Pro should bench the best based off the clocks compared to the regular A133, but again in practice it's around the same real-world performance.

I was the same, but as it turns out not only the RG353V didn't cover the systems it was advertised with, those shoulder buttons on verticals are fucking ass for active use and the d-pad was atrocious. So I went shopping for something else, the RP3+ looked great but the start and select placement ruined it for me, so I tried the other T618, X28, which had godly ergonomics and bigger screen... and fundamentally broken stick input, like jumping left while tapping right (picture it binded to digital inputs like N64's C buttons) that will never get fixed. Then I got the RGB30 which is fine for a side chinko, cheap build quality and d-pad isn't as bad as the 353V's but still not the general purpose machine I wanted. Finally snagged the RP2S and it made me feel like a sucker, the d-pad is great, the sticks are great, the performance is great (for the price). Got my Miyoo Mini Plus and I love it however there are a few things that I don't like but they are Onion OS related. First one is that it's too easy to accidentally press the save state/load state shortcuts while trying to take a screenshot and it almost costed me an hour of play but thankfully I somehow must have made a different save state by accident so I lost only like a single cutscene worth of time. I can't find it in tweaks but if there's a way to disable save/load state shortcuts altogether it would be nice (and fast forward too since that doesn't even require the "miyoo" button). Second gripe is that the gallery app kinda sucks and somehow file explorer is better for viewing images.

Feels fine IMO, as long as the games are made for 4:3 (or similar to 4:3) they'll look great. Keep in mind most 3.5" screens (if not all of them) are 480p which was the max res for everything up to ps2 and gamecube, so clarity's not an issue.

Hey guys I'm looking to get a handheld that can handle run up to PSX with some select DC games (Sonic Adventure 1 and 2) and perhaps a few N64 games (OoT and MM) but the focus will be GBA, DS, and PSX.

I have narrowed it down to the Anbernic RG35XX H or the RGB30. Battery life is important to me. I know lots of Anons like the RGB30's screen but I understand that the build quality suffers a bit.

I am also open to getting a retroid pocket 2s but I'm not sure I'd use the extra power for anything meaningful...maybe Wind Waker. The lack of custom firm ware on the XXH doesn't bother me since it will come eventually and the stock OS should hold me over just fine until then.

Id recommend the Retroid 2S. not for the power, since you said at most you'll be doing SA1/2, but because of the form factor. You'd be surprised at how uncomfortable some PSX games get without stacked shoulders, and if you get the grip the sticks aren't too uncomfortable either. Also androids touchscreen support makes DS emu a lot easier. Also android overall has better luck with N64 performance

I have two RK3566 chinkhelds (RGB30 being one), which I hear perform about the same as the H's chip and there's no sugarcoating it: they ARE bad at N64 and DC. What you might think as overkill performance is actually necessary for those, plus you get wiggle room for PS1 with Duck/Swanstation and all its modern bells and whistles that make 3566 and adjacents sweat. While you can probably squeeze wrong looking OoT on Rice video and whatever's the lightest N64 emu, MM too likely, RP2S is ultimately superior all around, d-pad you can rely on, analog triggers for the DC games that support it (don't think applies to SA, kart race on SA2 maybe?), good sticks (you'd be amazed at how bad they can get, powkiddy's tend to be on the lower end, I know some troglodytes who use RGB30's for digital input had to change Retroarch's settings for more reliable diagonals). Assuming it's like 20 or 30 bucks extra over the others, I consider the 2S an absolute no brainer. Again, RGB30 is not fit for beginners at all, LOTS of asterisks.

I also have the original and like it very much. Perks of the plus are additional power, bluetooth, better sensitivity on dpad and sloped L/R buttons. While I'm quite content with mine, I wish now I had gone with a horizontal handheld as it's most likely a lot more comfortable for prolonged sessions. The only downside here is the lack of sticks but the H has those so...yeah. Once CFW gets good for the XX+/H then the only real reason to get an RGB30 would be the screen. It sounds like you don't care as much about 1:1 ratio systems so this won't affect you too much.

Out of the two get the XXH. I imagine the menu button being on the top will get annoying though. The Pocket 2s is the better system but it is also more expensive. If you can swing the extra money go for the 2s. It isn't quite as pocketable as the H but it'll be fine.

Battery life on 2S is pretty alright, not as aggressive on idle power preservation as a chinkheld with GammaOS but still good, there's this feature (which I think is actually lifted from android's dev menu) that lets you timeout (and whitelist) apps in the background after X minutes. Me and some other guy here had data transfer USB connection problems which are supposedly solved by using USB C to USB C cables, but I ended up FTPing my stuff in anyway. Heard transparent units have a grippier finish than solid colors', haven't been able to get confirmation on that yet but my transparent black feels fine to hold. AFAIK the most complete android build with neat shit like hotkeys for enabling virtual mouse and a setup wizard that fetches the emulators.
