I'm playing the new Renaissance version, made by some dude in unity. All the original jank is still there, but with some QoL improvements, and a class overhaul.

It's been ~10 years since I played ANY version of the game, and I've never beaten the NES version.

A couple weeks back I bought VI pixel remaster, modded it to fit my preference and then played it twice for a couple hours. Somehow I just struggle to get invested in story based games nowadays. Like I want to play it but actually sitting down and playing doesn't seem to happen.

In this one, if your target dies, the remaining characters will randomly target another enemy.

SUPER helpful when you're fighting huge groups of enemies.

I had to run back to town. This game predates phoenix downs. The only way to revive dead people is the LIFE spell later...or going to a chapel in town, and paying for the res.

also, resting(via an Inn or a tent/cabin/house) is the only way to Save the game.

Since this was the NES, in order to save, you needed to hold the reset button for 3 seconds, then hit the power button, on this very specific screen.

also, holy shit control is SO GOOD.

gets easier to cast the lower the enemy's health is, if you control an enemy the rest of the enemies will focus it, and if the only surviving enemy is controlled, the battle ends and you get extra EXP.

It just doesn't work on humanoids or undead.

That wasn't a requirement for saving, but rather a preventative measure against save loss, because the Famicom/NES weren't designed with SRAM in mind.
When the Power button is pressed and the CPU powers down it starts to behave erratically once voltage drops below spec. For games without SRAM this isn't a problem. It might glitch or crash but it's shutting down anyway. For games with SRAM it meant the CPU also has a random chance or writing garbage data to it, corrupting saves.
It didn't happen all the time, but there was a non-zero chance that it could, so players were advised to hold Reset while pressing the Power button. Didn't matter when they did it, be it seconds or hours after saving, so long as they did do it. Holding Reset keeps the CPU in a "zero state" where it cannot read or write anything, allowing for a safe shutdown.
The system had a basic circuit designed to basically do just that automatically during the power up cycle, to prevent games from crashing as they booted. A more complex circuit that monitored voltage to reset the CPU when it dropped below spec was deemed both too costly and unnessary, since SRAM wasn't considered. Devs could've included such a circuit into their cartridges, but again it was far cheaper to just tell players to hold Reset. And of course later consoles would have better protections built-in.

tl;dr the CPU could go crazy and corrupt your save if you didn't hold Reset when shutting your NES off.

He can't control bosses, humanoids, or undead, but yeah, it's super good. His controlled enemies, as far as I can tell, also get an ATK boost while they're under his control; it's hilarious seeing a basic bitch WOLF doing 90 damage. His stats, however, are middling, and he can't equip much gear, so he's not super great when he's NOT fighting stuff he can control.

He does get a big Hit% boost while wielding axes though, so that's a boost to doubling.

It's always jarring to see things like basic QoL features just not in older games, or just things that have become outdated. Massive RPGs without some for of fast travel must have been a nightmare, and games like Wizardry have been described to be so bullshit that I can't imagine people ever willingly finished them without physically breaking the game.
Sprinting in diablo 2 comes to mind. As a kid it didn't feel as annoying to use because It was just accepted that it was part of the game, but last playthrough it felt a bit tedious. A lot of features can be head scratchers.

I wonder how many new enemies are in this. Wizard ogres are not in the remake bonus dunounes which add a shit load of new enemies.

Also a fucking wizard ogre srsly(inb4 its because of the char limit/bad translation)? was this a wizard that went insane and thought he was an ogre so he polymoph'd. Even mage orge or wtv they're called is just dumb. They look silly in every FF game they're literally wearing fursuits, yiff wild animals to fucking get them to submit or vice versa getting animals addicted to bussy and all sorts of other degen shit.
