I didn't play any Zelda games until well into adulthood but they're just really great games that capture the imagination.

It doesn't help that they don't have much competition. Like other older games like Shining Force, they're drawing from a western fantasy tradition that is no longer loved or respected like it used to be. The only modern dev delivering anything close to that is Fromsoft.

This as well

Copy-pasting just a few OoT things that felt new to me on my last playthrough
>devil skull outside of Ganon's Castle (deceased underling?)
>inaccessible(?) underwater cave in Zora's Domain
>3x ocarina notes if keeping Z or R pressed, allowing for complex melodies and maybe secrets
>field theme is adaptive and broken up into a set of 8-bar clips; relaxed if you're chilling and noisy if there's a lot of action
>Z-targeting sounds depend on location/context
>sound design is so awesome that you can even hear Talon's snores getting incrementally louder from a mile away
>can swim faster tapping B
>potion witch always turning her ear to you because she's blind
>all the Skulltulas in the world might be cursed humans
>can milk cows
>Poes remark that Link looks like Zelda and insinuate a connection with the royal family (Link and Zelda being siblings à la Star Wars would make a lot of sense)
>only need the Iron Boots like seven times in the Water Temple: For the boots to evoke so much scorn, it really shows how many people got filtered by the Water Temple
>Navi also isn't annoying at all if just trying to finish the game: Really shows how much people either loved wasting time in Hyrule or how many got filtered in general
>many characters die
>most if not all overworld mobs have a big alpha you can lure out
>lore-wise, Stalchildren probably still exist in the future but only hunt children (maybe how they're made)
>they also won't appear if young Link is walking on the road (or wearing the bunny mask)
>easily missable dialogue in which Salia remarks that your ocarina sounds different (Link likely lost hers in the current)
>all first three dungeons involve entering a huge creature's mouth
>Volvagia has a special boss theme and is the only spirit/guardian that's evil
>established resources like Deku Tree bark or Dodongo scales and stomach linings
>stealing the angler's hat
>the scratches on the Lake Hylia tree have a simple purpose

It always made me sad how much Rare tried to support Banjo as a new Nintendo IP with little direct references to other games and the expanded Mario universe and Nintendo was more the then happy to go with that, right up until Rare was sold and Nintendo just threw all their IPs out with them, not even trying to buy out the ones from the Rare/Nintendo collab era. Im sure they would have done the same for DK Country if it wasn't based on OG Kong.

The Stamper Bros. to be fair were foolish to try to outjew the Japanese jew Yamauchi. They intentionally sold 49% to Microsoft to have them at a stalemate believing Yamauchi would buy the remaining 2% from the Stampers at an inflated price to keep Rare, given their role on keeping the N64 afloat. They didn't expect the old man would actually sell Nintendo's 49% directly to Microsoft, forever and permanently fucking Rare into shovelware irrelevancy.

The faster you hit the wall, the more you'll bounce back from it afterward.

Hitting a wall fast enough, hard enough, will damage you.

The physicsfag in me really appreciates all of this. Not something you would expect an immersive first person fantasy dungeon crawling sim to care about, but they did.

Silent Hill is amazing at this, SH1 in particular is just amazing with how ridiculously complex or detailed arbitrary things are.
>the sound of the radio reflects how close an enemy is and which direction they're coming
>Harry has three unique falling animations that can only be seen near the start of the game in the only area with ledges
>the puppet nurses and doctors have three variants with a unique face texture and slightly different stats
>Infected Cybil can run out of ammo in her boss fight
Just walking around tbe town and seeing the stores on the street is entertaining, wish later SH titles kept this more open exploration.

In Mario RPG if you try to save into a used slot that is different from the one you are using it warn you that's not the slot of your previous save and if you are sure you want to overwrite it.

If you choose "No" at least about 10 times and then choose yes Mario will do a (random?) different animation than his usual victory animation. This happens in the remake too.

(Yes yes I know, horribly stretched video with ugly filters, but it was hard to find a video showing this)

Yeah BongoBongo was the evil interrogator for Hyrule, he used the Eye of Truth to find out spies and traitors against the Kingdom of Hyrule. I always figured that since the worst torture shit was found under his house instead of the shadow temple prison then he must have been doing really evil things beyond his job and when this was found out he was executed by beheading and his hands lopped off. I mean the entire area beneath the well can only be entered by one who has the eye of truth which would be him implying it was something he didn't want anyone else to know about.

That's my head canon on it anyway.

Makes sense that he was the royal torturer in life, the shadow temple and the bottom of the well both have cells and crucifixion posts. Maybe it started out at the bottom of the well then moved to the Shadow Temple, only for the Royal Family to find out he was taking his work home with him.

Since his spirit comes out of the well must mean they caught him at the scene of the crime and killed him there.

Then they blocked up the entrance except for the small child sized hole.

Course meant the Village was getting their water supply from an underground chamber filled with corpses.

This is what I love about the Zelda series along with others like the Thief games and Morrowind is there is a lot of enviromental story telling for anyone who stops to think about things enough. It shows true passion from the game developers and makes the world these video games set in seem real and immersive, sadly its something that is becoming more and more rare since it ultimately has no major bearing on the ultimate quality of a game for most people.

>> No.10433893

The problem is that these days game developers like most TV and movie developers think that the audience is too stupid to understand subtext and implications so they either have to spell it out in giant bold font like it's a Disney movie or simply not even bother because why create subtext if no one notices.

Like one of the largest things that disappointed me about Windwalker wasn't the graphic change but the fact that so many of the islands felt like cookiecutter islands for islands sake and so many of the ruins outside of maybe the forest ruins were ruins for Ruins sake.

Another thing is thanks to deadlines companies no longer have the time so spend time adding extras and secrets and clever points to flesh out a game, especially if they're trying to make a game changing game.

OOT was supposed to be a game changer so Nintendo was given plenty of time and support to put anything and everything to show this isn't the same Nintendo you knew, we're willing to be edgier now

so if you're going to talk about sovlfvl details zelda is a good start, but it isn't the only game series out there with these kinds of details. look at the catalogue. see how many threads there are related to zelda. it's too fucking much man. consider the following: i'd love to get around to playing OoT some day but i see it so much the game is starting to seem a little dull and generic, and i know the game isn't that.

I like this but one detail that doesn’t make sense for this theory is that you don’t need the Lens of Truth in order to enter the well; you cause the windmill to drain the well so that you can enter and retrieve the Lens of Truth from within it.
Another theory I’ve heard which works pretty well is that Bongo Bongo is a vengeful spirit similar to the manifestations of powerful emotions (Onin, I think) which cause other spirits like Poes to linger, but that instead of being the ghost of one person it’s an amalgamation of most/all of the tortured victims who died in the well/temple.
Which, if that’s the case, is frankly kind of depressing since it implies that the royal family’s crimes are effectively unpunished and the spirits of those they interrogated continued to suffer for no reason. At least Link finally enables them to lay to rest in that interpretation.

It isn't some specific algorithm, but a general strategy to solve constraint problems, which can absolutely be made deterministic, even if general IK strategies can be chaotic, especially when you're only really dealing with two joint rotations with 1 and 3 degrees of natural freedom + the ankle joint and.

The funny thing is there's a legitimate 32-bit sprite of Trevor in the game for the inverted Colosseum, but Alucard remembers him in 8-bit. It's like how little kids used to ask adults if "it was black and white back then," because they watched old tv and their parents teased them.

Maybe it was intended as another shortcut but then they realized it's too deep for young Link and the Domain will stay frozen in the future. Or it's just part of Hyrule's underground water cycle. Or we are supposed to imagine that the real Zora village is hidden under the surface and behind the walls where they have their rooms

TP's Death Sword's Japanese name is also Sword of Gobera. Considering Death Sword also moves and shoots projectiles like Phantom Ganon and the sword looks like something Ganondorf would use (down to an upside down Triforce like on Demise's sword), it's most definitely Phantom Ganon

Anon, King Dodongo and Volvagia share battle music, and Phantom Ganon, Morpha, Bongo Bongo, and Twinrova are all evil as well. Additionally, while this might be my personal speculation, the Stalchildren are likely not children, but the soldiers who died in the civil war. They might be "children" because they look like smaller, weaker Stalfos. Only Skull Kids are confirmed to be actual children.

The Royal Family had Triforce symbols that responded to their song (Zelda's Lullaby) in the Bottom of the Well complex and the Shadow Temple, so everything there was government approved, not the work of a rogue agent. This means that Bongo Bongo was either an accumulated Poe of sorts or an engineered weapon created by the Sheikah, and it wasn't imprisoned so much as the Sheikah just put it in storage under their likely chieftain's house. Also, considering the area Dampe uses as his grave, along with the Redead grotto, All of the caverns and tunnels in Kakariko Village were likely used by the Sheikah for nefarious purposes, and the Sheikah's infamy may have resulted in them being especially targeted in the wars, resulting in them nearly going extinct.

Deku Nuts work on Gohma, Bomb Flowers exist in King Dodongo's arena, the Hookshot works on Phantom Ganon, Din's Fire works to get Morpha out of its water tentacles, and neither the Hover Boots nor the Lens of Truth are required against Bongo Bongo.

>> No.10454204

>>10453918
The made-up part was Volvagia being a god like the Great Deku Tree or Lord Jabu-Jabu.

>>10454029
It was a total asspull with no founding in the game though, and it's baffling why the Golden Goddesses would allow one of their divine servants to try genociding the Gorons. The Megaton Hammer wasn't even a weapon created by the gods, nor was its first wielder chosen by them. Additionally, if Valoo is somehow a new version of Volvagia a la Jabun being Jabu-Jabu, there's no reason for Valoo to arbitrarily cease being evil.

>> No.10454214

>>10454073
Valoo is a different type of dragon entirely who shows no animosity to any race in particular, is highly respected and trusted by King Daphnes, and Ganon antagonizes him with Gohma instead of recruiting him like he did with Volvagia. Where Volvagia is clearly a monster a la Aquamentuses and Gleeoks, Valoo is a servant of the gods who has never been suspect.
