I like Final Fantasy 1-5, but I don't like the mainline games after that point.

I haven't played 6 (I have played 7 and later) but that seems to be when they started introducing futuristic tech into the series. I don't like that. I miss when Final Fantasy was about a mythical midde-ages European fantasy world.

There's a robot in the first game and fucking spaceships in 4.

Sure but there's a difference between the world's of 1 and 4 vs the world's of 7 or 15

That's the dumbest shit I've ever heard. The games were set in a very specific type of world for 5-6 games plus multiple spin-offs and then they abandoned it.

You said you wanted medevial fantasy jRPG, I give you 9-10 games of that. You've just decided you wanted to be unhappy, that's all.

FFVI comes off like a fantasy World War I era to me. I guess that's kind of steampunk. That period was a real clash of societies. You had technology and relatively modern cities but there was still a shit ton of empires and old school monarchies.

>a fantasy World War I
Yeah that feels very accurate.
And in the beginning of the war they had the pointy brass helmets and fancy uniforms and a lot of things that felt more at home in the previous century, not yet adapted for modern warfare and its technological advances.

It's not really "futuristic". The whole point of FFVII is that it WAS a traditional Dragon Quest-style world until relatively recently when someone discovered they could crack Mana from the ground to use as fuel, leading to rapid industrialization, corporatism, and global imperialism.

You have these towns that look like something straight out of FFIV, but since a reactor was built nearby, the whole town becomes dependent on it as the center of their economy, just like what actually happened in the early 20th century with oil.

It's just Midgar that's a big dystopian city.

FFX and XIII are also "twists" on the medieval fantasy concept, not just futuristic for no reason. VIII is the only one that doesn't attempt to justify its setting, IMO.

You also still have IX, XII, XVI, and XI and XIV. Plus spinoffs like Tactics, Four Warriors of Light, and Crystal Chronicles. Plenty of stuff to enjoy outside of 6 "futuristic" games if you can even call them that.

That doesn't explain why so many characters wore modern looking clothes though. I blame Nomura for that.

It was just too good and came out at the perfect moment in Japan (RPG craze around DQ3's release), and its DND roots made it appealing to the US as well

I think you have good taste for enjoying 1-5, but that's such a weird thing to fixate on. Especially since 9 exists.

>> No.10328409

>>10327549

Yeah. The older games have advanced machines in them but those are built by ancient people or faraway people or some such. FF6 includes multiple societies that are CURRENTLY producing advanced machinery.

OP, you should still play that one though. It's got robots and a chainsaw in it but it still feels satisfyingly old-timey, not modern or futuristic. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of electricity or gunpowder or computing technology. Like somebody else said, it feels like steampunk, not like four guys driving around in a car while wearing black leather jackets or whatever.
