I like the original. A well-lit environment is a lot more unnatural. Gives a false sense of security, like you wouldn't expect zombies to be in the light, yet there they are.

I prefer the remake because it tries much harder to be a horror game and succeeds in every possible way. Though I do see how the original resembles cheesy 60s mansions with the tacky wallpaper and interiors.

Being one of the odd people that actually prefers RE1 out of the classic trilogy I’ve always had an issue with REmake 1’s design choices, particularly in the environment. Its way too dilapidated, and doesn’t feel particularly lived in. RE1’s mansion has the perfect feel of a functional house with a couple labs underneath. And it wasn’t afraid to have color. I liked REmake but I’ve always disliked the drab, generic haunted house look of everything. Kinda tickles the austism when the mansion implies its been running since the sixties, looks like its been abandoned since the sixties, but the outbreak happened a couple months ago.

Many do anon. I'd say its liked more than Nemesis. RE2 is probably the favorite of the PS1 era games and its my favorite to but RE1 is by no means this dated or shitty game just because REmake exists. I think its better than REmake. fucking geriatrics. Zombies are evil creatures. They are creatures of the night. How is it more atmospheric for them to live in a blown out gamma ray mansion where their eyes would explode when it's way more realistic and scary for them to live in a dark mansion?

Because they're not goddamn ninjas, you dumb fucking nigger. They're just people infected with a virus that makes them rotting cannibals who don't care if it's light or dark.
Nobody in the mansion thought to turn off the lights when athe virus outbreak happened. The mansion being left intact shows that its inhabitants fell victim to it quickly that there was no time to do anything except fucking die. That's great horror.

Those virgin de guadelupe candles they sell in tall glass containers at the grocery store for $0.99 will burn for a couple of days. I have a bunch of them in my house as emergency candles in case of a power outage or whatever.

It's still retarded, but maybe the wiring in the old mansion was not super great (or the wiring out to the mansion, considering its in the middle of the forest) and the power went out on a fairly regular basis, leading Umbrella to rely on backup generators for the lab equipment and candles for some areas of the mansion itself.

The thing I hated the most in the remake was how they literally removed all of the color and just made everything dark/grungy. The original game was bright and colorful, yet was still scary.

You should try Martian Gothic, you can't even kill normal enemies in that, only knock them down for a short time.
And most important rooms have tight spaces and reviving enemies in them.
And you switch between three characters who can't get close to each other, and two of them don't even start with a weapon (the one who does is trapped in a place with no enemies).
On top of that the game specifically goes out of its way to troll you.

It's strange. I get the feeling that a more modern hatred of remakes being soulless cash grabs and a desire to praise "the original" have driven some posters (read: zoomzooms) to shit on the GC remake. I played the original REs when they were the only REs, and excitedly got REmake when it too was new. I think both (or all, rather, if you count OG/DC/DSDC as separate versions) stand on their own and are worth playing.

The Gamecube remake wasn't some totally soulless corporate cash grab, a lot of people who worked on previous RE games worked on it and put in a fuckton of effort to polish an already great game.

I hated it the first time I played it. It's very flawed, and the controls and inventory management are awful. This time however I started enjoying it when I got further in. The 'puzzles' are somewhat adventure-game-like and it's satisfying to make progress. But that's probably less an indication of quality, and more a case of me liking it in spite of it being awful.

I never cared about the candles personally, but changes made in remakes and sequels always stand out more than something existing in a vacuum. People wouldn't complain about the art design in the Demon's Souls remake if it didn't ruin the intent and subtlety by changing things.
The developers went out of their way to make candles the primary light source in their updated vision for the Spencer Mansion, they were clearly making an artistic decision and that's a valid thing to criticize. Admittedly it's minor but everyone has a different threshold for suspension of disbelief.

Not all of the music from that version is great but I still think its pretty good or at least good enough for setting the atmosphere of RE1. Yes the original soundtrack is better overall though. Mansion basement is a legendarily bad song at this point.

This is what I think too. Right around the time the patch that makes the old PC port playable on modern systems started getting popular is when I first noticed quite a few people talking about how the pacing in the remake is completely fucked compared to the original game. I guess it just kinda snowballed from there.

Yeah it was terrifying as a kid walking up the stairs and around the upper deck area. That whole game scared me shitless as a 5 year old. My brother used to torture me with it to because he knew I was afraid of it(my brother beat me up a lot and made me do horrible things sometimes). My mom told me I used to wake up in the middle of the night crying for God to help me because of my brother (I obviously repressed those memories). So, yeah. The remake at least for me just doesn't do it. I still get nostalgia scared playing resident evil like an old fear I've conquered but I feel it on the back of my neck.

There's more nitpicky examples I can give but over all yeah it is just retarded and the actual gameplay and puzzles are not good enough to offset it.
I also should note the original Dreamcast release was really ugly, like the environments looked awful and the game was extremely dark for no reason in some areas. CVX mostly fixed these although it's still dark as balls just not as much as the original release.

I don't know what else to add.
To summarize, it's called Martian Gothic: Unification. It's a janky Resident Evil clone set on a Mars research station with needlessly winding corridors and terrible decor, you switch between three characters, send items back and forth like Day of the Tentacle, have constant inventory problems despite each character having 18 inventory slots, you can't kill most of the enemies, you get instakilled by certain enemies (and if the characters get close to each other), and the controls are godawful. It makes you fight for every small advantage you get and then finds new ways to fuck you over. It's great.
I haven't seen it yet but the video at >>10175240 will probably tell you anything you want to know.

2 is a better remake than 3 is, even with the lack of a proper zapping system or whatever the hell it's called.
They use the same engine and homogenized some stuff between the titles, but they differ a lot on design elements and faithfulness to the originals. Also Remake 2's Mr X makes a much better Nemesis than Remake 3's Nemesis does.

Oh and
>the map is useless and borderline inaccurate on purpose so you'll accidentally run characters into each other, like there's a one-way door where you don't know where it goes and there's a good chance it will just put you in with another character and kill you both
>There are very few rooms without enemies where it's safe to leave a character unattended, and even fewer with save points and item transfer stations
>Notes take up space in your inventory, and you have to find lockers to store them
>More than one instance of having to down one of the dozens of identical-looking enemies to get an item from their body
>Unless you know exactly where to go, you will spend a good hour of the game without any weapons and get bitten repeatedly by unavoidable zombies until they just decide to lie down and leave you alone for a while
>Because the janky grabs teleport your character into them, sometimes you get inexplicably spun around and you're pretty much screwed
>When you finally find an enemy you CAN kill, it immediately respawns in the same room
>The music often drowns out the voices (there are subtitles)
>I'm pretty sure there are computer passwords that just have nowhere to use them
>There's a TERRIBLE puzzle late in the game where you have to carefully position a character in the same room as another character (without getting close) and shoot a switch with a toy gun
>Rooms and enemies can be hidden behind camera angle changes
>Sometimes your bullets just go right through enemies
>Instadeath action sequences with tight timing despite awful controls
>There's a zombie that shoots at you which can stunlock you to death
>Did you think you finally opened a shortcut? Sorry, no you didn't.
>No, that's not the RIGHT screwdriver, go get another one

Anon, you can kill Lisa too.
Saying you can kill MR X and Nemesis really doesn't count because they were damage sponges that would returm and Mr X flat out dropped nothing for killing him. There is no risk or reward if we are talking the original trilogy regarding MR X (though he appeared briefly in RE2 so he wasn't as troublesome). Nemesis appeared frequently meaning killing him had little impact on the plot and his rewards were more demanding as you played. But he doesn't "die". You basically knocked him out. I do agree Lisa should have been able to be stunned or knocked out but why waste the ammo anyways? She isn't mean to die in the mines. Only in the crypt.

Killing Mr. X stopped him from chasing/blocking you in the room you are in, Nemesis was even more important to drop because he would follow you into other rooms. When I say kill I don't mean dead for good I mean they are gone until their next scripted encounter. Lisa the most you can do is have her do a little stun animation before getting right back up, it makes the areas she is in just annoying to deal with.

Low info, low IQ Sweet Home in the Dark secondaries just make me laugh.

They rationalize and lionize the aesthetic abortion of '96; its clashing colors, its boorish anime inspired character design and tropes, the lazy modernist architecture with day glow lighting, the non-sensical mansion layout, its complete tonal dissonance with what a man like Spencer would have built
