>want to play some sega saturn in 2023
>figure emulation for it must be fine by now
>go through 3 emulators all with various problems
>finally settle on yabause because it works fine except for some messed up music and missing SFX
>start enjoying dragon force 2 until the emulator can no longer handle all the troops on screen

Oh well. Maybe in another decade I'll actually be able to play this busted ass piece of shit from 30 years ago.

No point in waiting for the emulation scene to catch up. There's literally no worthwhile games to play on that turd that don't already have PS1 ports. Those arcade titles that everyone harps are inferior ports, just play the actual arcade roms on FBNeo

Yaba Sanshiro 2 was working perfectly for years until the most recent update messed it up for me. If you can get an older version of it, it should probably run fine. Sometimes it's the game itself, though.

>>10099631
I wouldn't say there's no worthwhile games but it's true most of the games have modern or better ports elsewhere, including NiGHTS, Guardian Heroes, Radiant Silvergun, Virtua Fighter 2, Daytona, etc. Used to play OutRun and Street Fighter on Saturn all the time until I learned about Cannonball and Super Turbo on 3DO.

Also most of the good shmups are on PS1, namely the Konami shooters, Wolf Fang, and Thunder Force V for the five people who prefer it over IV

Not him, personally had more fun with Burning Soldier, Starblade, and Total Eclipse on 3DO. Have yet to play Gamera 2000 or Star Fox 64 to compare it to them. In terms of Panzer Dragoon, Saga is the one that seems to be heavily sought after, though I haven't played that one yet either (I know it's an RPG and not a rail shooter like the others)

I also had a 3DO (my first CD console, although I already had a PC with CD drive), and I had Total Eclipse, still have it actually. I have fond memories of it, nostalgia, but... it was just an OK game. Can't compare to the kind of stuff japanese developers did.

>> No.10099781

man saturn gets such a bad rap on this site. to me it was one console that was just a mystery - I don't know anyone who ever had one in my country. Dreamcast was more prevalent (just), which I had, and an N64, from the same console generation. But, Ryo in Shenmue had a saturn, and so did Asuka in Evangelion. So, basically they became cool to me.

I bought one a year ago. It's like Dreamcast to me, where there's actually a lot of the library I don't super care for, but a handful of titles that justify it. Plus I mean who doesn't have a boner for old game tech on vr. Opening the disc tray is fun.

I don't blame people for thinking negatively about the saturn, if it's not your thing that's totally fine.
However, I don't think you can really say that it has nothing.

It has a fair amount of exclusives, as well as games that were only released on PC in addition to the saturn:
https://www.retroreversing.com/sega-saturn-exclusives/

As you found, emulators aren't perfect, even for systems like N64 they can have issues with certain games.
So really there is still value in the saturn since it can play those games as they were meant to be played.

Even if you get a saturn game to work well in emulation, which some can, i doubt you would ever be able to set up reliable and issue free multiplayer through the simulator, and forget trying to use any of the accessories like light guns/racing wheels, etc.

If I only played "great" games, AKA as games that the press loves, a lot of them would bore me to tears because I'm not necessarily part of their intended audience. I would also be missing games that I would actually enjoy, even if they don't belong popular series or have huge budgets.

Forgot about Mednafen, that's a good alternative to BizHawk.

For those don't want to mess with a commandline every time you load a game there is a frontend for it called MedGui Reborn. It's a little jank but it works for the most part as long as your ISO collection isn't a mish-mashed mess.

>>10100234
While I am an advocate for real hardware, the "best method for playing pirated games" would be either burning many disks for that 30+ year old cd-rom drive, or buying an ODE which are expensive as I don't believe there are much if any chink clones of them. So that's only really an option for those very into the Saturn/retro gaming. And this is coming from someone who has two Saturns and loves the system.

Panzer Dragoon 1 and 2 could've worked very well as FMV shooters, especially if they could manage to integrate the camera mechanics somehow. I think I just prefer the older style with some games, the same goes for a lot of shmups on Saturn. They are fun but I really like the look and feel of the ones on SEGA CD and Genesis. There was also no real reason for Saturn not to get Starblade, it's on both SEGA CD and PS1.

If you want to buy and play text heavy games like RPGs then, you'll need an NTSC console.

But JP games are cheaper. The Saturn is really good for fighting games and shoot em ups, obviously, and there's a small bunch of other cool action games where English isn't a major requirement. I like the Saturn for its good pick up and play games.

You can always get an optical disk emulator installed, or look into a satiator, but those are stupid expensive. it's a little insertable custom piece of hardware that goes in the back slot which was for like, some video upgrade add on. it'll run isos. fan translated games etc

It's mostly the typical backlash that something that was once unpopular/obscure and then becomes cult/acclaimed and gets a hardcore fanbase gets. Similar to Earthbound.
I get that fanboys and overly excited people can be annoying, so I get why the backlash happens, but then we get to a point where the backlashers end up being more annoying and vocal than the fanboys they complain about.
The internet also amplifies this phenomena.

If it's anything like the later Xbox360 release, they just most likely just mapped it to 8-way digital movement. The 360 version at least got patched, but from what I understand it was still not true analog like the Saturn version but they just simply largely increased how many angels NiGHTS can digitally snap to. Not sure if any re-release/remake ever got the analog right.

Honestly, I would love to know this. Did any version after the Saturn ever correct the controls and get true analog again? Like maybe the Steam version? (Or mods for it at least?)

So, what about games on that Saturn that actually are better than the PS1 versions?

I don't mean crap examples such as Symphony of the Night that has two ill-fitting rushed areas added but has worse everything else and is still overall a much better game on the PS1.

Grandia tends to be a decent examlke I have seen people talk about, but there are still both pros and cons to both. Another that is more obscure is Street Racer, of which the visuals on the PS1 version seem considerably lacking compared to Saturn.

I guess many arcade ports of 2D fighters or other 2D games would count too, but unless there is a lot of content added to the console version many of those you can just play the arcade version for a better experience.
