PS2 version -
Solid 60fps, minor drops into 50s
Well balanced look, visuals are discernible and clean, brightness seems appropriately tuned
some distant pop in (blends with distance fog well)
X button to accelerate is typical, holding it and double tapping for boost feels more comfortable
Very nice water reflections, fully detailed and proper
Cleanest particle effects
FMV has better color but some blocking

Xbox version -
Tries to run at 60fps, often hovering in low 50s except in the boat where it's inconsistent 30s
Very dark visually, needed to turn up brightness on CRT. 480p is nice and the visuals do look more "realistic" as opposed to having better clarity. Appears to be anti-aliased (!) but seems to be at a big cost.
A button to accelerate is atypical, usually it's R trigger. The roundness of the button makes it a little uncomfortable to hold for long periods.
Ugly water reflections, while present have an overbright, dull look - doesn't help the game runs so poorly in water
Particles and sprites don't blend well into the environment, can look like they're not integrated into the environment
FMV appears smoother but has harsh color banding that makes it look unpleasant in motion.

PS2 wins.

The xBox and PS2 were certainly closer in power than many realise. Certainly both are quite a leap ahead of the GameCube.

>> No.10057071

If the game was originally made to take advantage of PS2's wacky architecture, porting it to Xbox or Gamecube would be quite a challenge. Same happens in reverse cases.

The Xbox was a generational leap ahead of the PS2 and Gamecube. PS2 was definitely the weakest though.

Spyhunter is a fun game, I recommend giving it a try. I can't vouch for the Cube version but seeing how the Xbox version performs I don't have high expectations. Seems to be a great fit for PS2.

Congrats, you found another early Xbox game thats better on ps2, that clearly means the ps2 was actually more powerful

So it's not a "Solid 60fps".

There are two different console games called Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2. That is not a proper comparison between PS2 and Xbox.

To make a silly analogy, Gamecube and Xbox were a buff and an extremely buff dudes who could easily beat you up. PS2 was, on the other hand, a regular dude with a medical degree who knew where exactly to bite you to rip your artery and cause a blood fountain.

>> No.10057543

Or to avoid stupid analogies, the PS2 had a bunch of bandwidth compared to the others and not much else. So it could do fancy effects but couldn't churn out polygons as well.

Is this meant to be impressive? PS2 games run circles around this.

NFS hot pursuit 2 - I don't know about consoles. But it's all kinds of bland on pc. Looked impressive back in a day though. Steering feels kinda weird on keyboard, I guess with a controller it could be better on longer curves. I prefer digital steering on retro racing games, it's generally easier to be consistent.
