Sure did. Got it bootlegged in Chinatown, but was only partially able to read some of it, but mostly relied on the Japanese voiceovers. It was marketed all over Gainax's website in the mid-90s while it was still on-air, and I wanted it but I couldn't afford it so in the same place where I got my HK silvers for Playstation and eventually Dreamcast games, the shoppe had it for $1USD in the corner. The game is one of my most favorite visual novel games, with one of the best characters of the series.

I did play this back then, sadly not the PC version with the nipples, but the safe PSX version.
Having a modded psx and a shitton of japanese games was very common back then, I had a cilynder full of CDs specifically dedicated to anime games.
Evangelion games were specially attractive because the hype was crazy back then, everyone I knew wished they could play the N64 game that came out too, but pirating the N64 was just a pipedream.

It didn't matter much if you didn't know japanese, you could just try stuff until it worked. In Visual Novels you could even write down the choices (1-1-2-3-2-2) and see if the scenes/ending changed and replay accordingly, the voice acting helped a lot to know what was happening too, like if the voices were sad or happy, scared, etc.
Really japanese games were really fine to play even if you knew nearly zero japanese, unless it was an extremely complex strategy game (like those nobunag warring state games) with screens full of kanji or something like that.

getting a modchip was really easy in most large cities then you learned of warez sites some vidya rental places would also let you rent games for 1 hour/day and have an "internet cafe" in the place too and sold blank cd's some even already had "import" already burned another cool thing some rental places did is you can rent the game by the hour and play it in store like a custom arcade. They'd run lan parties and tournaments on the weekend too. It was cheap as fuck and fun legit 1-2$ an hour in like 98. And yes these places no shit were owned by organized crime one place got there hands on like 500 PSX's(truck went missing) modded them and sold them with 5-10 burned games for a tad more then a new PSX

90's hacker culture was cool as fuck man. Buying stolen shit off a truck was great. Poor zoomers got to miss out on the last great generation. 9/11 ruined everything.

My experience was warped because I was lucky to be a part of a big ultra extreme weeb circle, everyone I knew did have tons of psx jp games on burned CDs, a lot of imported SNES and Saturn stuff too. We had a friend that had an older brother that traveled to japan often and another guy who's father was one of those merchant marines that brought us back goods and taped anime from tv in VHS.

There's just a lot of misconceptions here, so I do kind of mind. Most of what I have cater to my tastes which is not what the majority like. Most here don't enjoy visual novels nor Saturn games, which made them the only games I could afford at the time that I grew to enjoy, so they are not shit to me unlike what you may think. Having a few games physically does not imply disposable income, as mentioned it was all I could afford was the bootleg of the game. My official position is associate where I work and my employer is very anti-union so my wage is barely above the national minimum.

Thanks for the thorough answer. I'd like to clarify:

I used "a ton of shit" in the general, "stuff" sense of the word. I didn't mean any disrespect. Saturn games are actually among my favorites as well. Visual novels aren't my cup of tea, but I understand the appeal. As far as the rest of my post goes, it is true that having "a few" games does not imply disposable income, but having "a ton" like you do probably does. You post frequently and consistently, with original pictures of many different games and hardware related to the threads here, so I'm confident you understand where my misconceptions come from.

What I'm saying is, I can easily appreciate someone with the dedication you display, and that's what led me to write my previous post. Considering the overall quality of the board as of late, I hope you'll stick around. Thanks for sharing.

So anyway, how is Evangelion not mecha?
>the robots aren't actually robots!
They're kind of cyborgs with a fuck ton of mechanic parts. Also, mixing biological materials with mechs didn't impede many, many mecha shows from being catalogued mecha, this isn't a proper argument.
>it has too much focus on the human characters!
So like virtually every other mecha show, especially ones like Gundam, that try to show pilots are real humans (Newtype magic aside)
>it has too much focus on psychology!
This doesn't exclude it from being mecha
>It doesn't have enough mecha tropes!
But it "rips off" mecha shows, right?
I know I sound cynic and pedantic, but that's only because I have no sympathy for people who pretend to like mecha, you guys just want to be part of a special club, and since Evangelion is too normie, you hate it because it disrupts your sense of pertencence. If any of you guys are sentimental about the past, whether you experienced it or not (or heck makes you long for it even more, like a mystery), try to take heart that time is kinda big. Like 1700s ancestors, even tho they're 300 years from us, them messing with Greek archaeology etc are still like us in that it's a few thousand years apart from those Greeks. So 300 years, let alone almost 30 years since og Eva broadcast, suddenly doesn't feel like so long ago when a guy 300 years ago would feel like us in regards to how long ago an even older thing was. I think that's comforting -- look past human lifespan and soak up the years, lads

People hate Eva cause it's the Naruto of seinen. An entry level anime of the worst kind with the most insufferable fan base this side of... you guessed it... Naruto. A pretentious slop with the most overused thinly veiled themes in seinen (anti-westernism, anti-judeochristianity) and the most basic waifu-bait no-personality template characters. None of the characters are original, theyve all been done before.

I remember disctinctly this shit(original version) was fan translated on PC with dubious quality decades ago, thats the reason why this thing is kind of popular with fans in the first place, for the longest time it was literally the only eva game most people would acknowledge aside from the 64 one, even when evangelion 2 would be mentioned on this same board not that long ago, people kept believing its "that VN game with the important lore", somehow confusing both games altogether.

Exactly, then people knew what Evangelion was by the late 90s. Granted, it was a different time: no massive internet, the word "fandom" was unknown (I honestly started reading it in the late 2000s, I think), and in order to watch series like Evangelion you had to invest on buying the expensive VHSs (or be lucky enough to have IRL friends who had them and would lent you their copies so you could copy them on your VCR)
