hey anons, what's the best way to experience this nowadays on PC? I tried looking around recently but apparently the best port was phased out in favour of a shitty one?
only time I've ever played one of the duke's games was on my brother's GBC copy and I was hoping to rectify that

Was there a contemporary HD patch for the win98 version of Duke 3D? I had this version as a kid, and Jesus fuck, all my memories of the game are of everything being polygonal, not sprites.

How do I into Duke 3D? Everyone praises it like it's some master class in classic FPS games, but I just cannot get myself to enjoy it. I thought I'd love it because I really like Doom 1+2. Every other level makes me feel like an idiot because I'll be wandering around in circles for twenty minutes completely lost, only to discover by complete accident that there was an inconspicuous tile on the wall I was supposed to hit to open a hole in the wall. You never know what switches do, you hit one and it opens a door on the opposite side of the level, and while you're wandering around trying to figure out where to go you forget if you've pressed the button already or not. Enemies take a fucking million shots to kill, and you can never use the fun weapons because you have to conserve your ammo since there is so little and enemies are such sponges. Whenever you get a helpful item, like ammo or health, a hoard of enemies spawns directly behind you and you waste all the ammo or health you just picked up. There's one particular enemy that just makes me so fucking mad every time I see it. The flying suicide drone that hides from you until you least expect it, then it comes barreling towards you and explodes, dealing like 70 fucking damage. There's no point in even trying to kill it, because as soon as you shoot it, it comes right for you and it takes a million shots to kill, and if you do manage to kill it before it suicide bombs your ass, it explodes and does a shit ton of damage to you anyway! It rarely appears in wide open areas so you can't even run from it. I've given this game so many chances and every time I play it I just want to turn it off and play Doom. What am I doing wrong? There must be something I'm missing.
