I hate to say it, but you could make a case for the Double Dragon series.
>The first one was one of the top grossing arcade game of the year and the home conversions are heavily anticipated, with the NES version selling out during its release month.
>The second game is just as well-received as the first, resulting in a rights dispute between Acclaim and Tradewest over the publishing of the NES port.
>The third game gets overshadowed by Final Fight and is mostly known for inventing microtransactions by having in-game item shops that require real money. The NES version is a broken mess mostly remembered from the Bimmy memes popularized by the AVGN.
>The fourth game goes straight to SNES and ships unfinished despite some promising ideas.
>The cartoon and movie adaptations are rubbish and their vs.fighting game tie-ins are nothing to write home about.
At least Battletoads & Double Dragon was fun, even if they got Machine Gun Willy's name wrong.
