how do I have fun playing heroes games

>make two heroes, one main army and one errand boy to pickup stray items and resources
>nuke enemy heroes unless I get defeated then reload last save

I feel like I am playing a difficult FPS game saving at every corner. If I play without saving more defensively I just hoard more and more units and enemy does the same and it changes nothing.
