The way it worked was the stock LaserActive would play regular Laserdiscs just fine because that's what it was for. If you inserted one of the PACs into the expansion bay it would turn the machine into a Genesis/Sega CD or Turbo Duo, fully compatible with existing software. The Mega LD and LD-ROM2 were basically Laserdisc games for each respective console, so yeah, if you wanted to play a Mega LD game you needed the Sega PAC. It wouldn't work with the NEC PAC and vice versa.

This is why I suspect that the Flashcarts could probably play the LaserActive games on a base Genesis/PC-Engine. A Mega LD game is really just a Sega CD game except the video is on a Laserdisc. A Mega Everdrive can already play Sega CD games on a Genesis without a Sega CD attached.

I know modding this heap for RGB Scart won't have any affect on the LaserDisc parts but what about the Mega Drive and PC Engine games?

My favorite console variation in my opinion is the Laseractive with the console PACs.

Nah I think it's rather interesting. Kudos to Sega for trying new things. They were kind of ahead of the curve with the idea of a unified entertainment system.

I'm about to take the plunge into laserdisc collecting, and was wondering if this is actually worth picking up. I know I've seen people on here talk about it before, and that some of you have them and/or other laserdisc players to compare it to. And I seem to remember reading on here that they're actually kinda shit as far as players go. Is that true?

The LaserActive (レーザーアクティブ RēzāAkutibu?) is a converged device and fourth-generation game console capable of playing Laserdiscs, Compact Discs, console games, and LD-G karaoke discs. It was released by Pioneer Corporation in 1993. In addition to LaserActive games, separately sold add-on modules (called "PACs" by Pioneer) accepts Mega Drive/Sega Genesis and PC Engine/TurboGrafx 16 ROM cartridges and CD-ROMs.

Pioneer released the LaserActive model CLD-A100 in Japan on August 20, 1993 at a cost of ¥89,800, and in the United States on September 13, 1993 at a cost of $970. NEC later released a cloned version of the system, the NEC PDE-LD1, which also accepted Pioneer's PAC modules. Due to its low value for money, the LaserActive was a commercial failure

Laseractive game dumping is happening. Guy's already dumped one game (Space Berserker) and is asking people to send him others to dump. Can't believe we're actually on track to LaserActive emulation.
