Yes of course there are. It should be no surprise to anyone that the most popular games in any genre are going to be the most accessible ones. Invest 40 hours into the most popular games of any genre and you will enjoy success at them unless your skills are truly sub-par and yes if you're an idiot you can dump tons of time into even dragon quest and make no progress.

It's not like the skills one develops from shmups have any more practical application than the ones developed from jrpgs. Some people just enjoy one kind of experience while others enjoy different ones.

It's actually preposterous to think that people actually beat this series on hardware back in the day. I know it was made for hardcore jrpg fans, but Jesus. I tried, but sucuumbed to save states scumming at the very end.
