The fucking wii one actually had some potential but of course they had to use the motion controls and couldn't figure out how so they made all the swordfights turn based.

I never thought the combat in those games could somehow get worse, but boy, was I wrong. I still can't believe Nintendo pissed away an entire console generation by forcing meme controls onto everyone and somehow got richer by doing it.

Nothing wrong with that if the game is properly designed to account for that mechanic. On the other hand, if the game has a habit of cheap-shotting you out of nowhere in midair when it's too late to change direction, that's kind of bullshit.

This one drives me nuts, because when the fuck are status ailments even useful outside of boss fights?

>poison only works on low-level enemies
>kill them with melee before poison does anything
>confuse only works on low-level enemies
>kill them with melee before they do anything anyway
>insta-kill only works on low-level enemies
>could kill them in one or two hits anyway so who cares

Also, frequent random battles are and always have been a shit mechanic that makes most JRPG's a slog to replay. I'm fine with making no-encounter items or abilities hard to come by but there needs to be some way to dial that shit back or it's a no for me

It was actually pretty cheesy that they got to use names and art from console games that they bore absolutely no resemblance to. It would be like me putting a piece of jerky and a cracker in a bag and then calling it a Big Mac.
