>It's too hard.

I'd tell you to git gud, but 4? Hard? Are we thinking about the same game? Its not any more challenging than anything out of 1 or 3. I just don't understand how you could consider 4 too hard when its difficulty is basically run of the mill as far the series goes.

>The robot masters suck.

What is it you don't like about them? Design is a very subjective topic. Personally I think its a solid ensemble with some cool standouts like Skull Man and Pharaoh man, some kind of lame ones like Bright man and Toad man, and some hysterical ones like fucking Dust man.

>The music sucks.

Okay nigger you just crossed a line

4 has some fucking outstanding tracks in a series absolutely riddled with great OSTs to the point the worst mainline entries can be described as "still pretty fucking great". Anything speciifc you dislike about 4?

>The Wiley gauntlet drags on for way too long.

Do you mean the boss fight or the castle itself? The boss fight is pretty standard length, and having extra levels in the castle is pretty dope - just take a break if you feel a bit worn out.

>The introduction of the charge shot sucks. It effectively means you constantly need to have a charged up shot ready since there is no reason not to, though that criticism also applies to all the games after.

This point is actually fair, but frankly its never bothered me in 4 - the game is designed around the new flow the buster brings to the table with more timing based challenges as you are now trying to unload burst damage during small windows rather than constantly spamming shots. it isn't an objective improvement to the formula as much as it is its own unique thing - some people like it, others don't.

Been on a classic binge lately and realizing I've played these games to absolute death

What are some decent rom hacks? The NES remakes of 7 and 8 look fun, but I actually know very little of MM Rom hacks. Any must plays?

Charge shots and slide unironically dilute the level design in Classic MM. Removing them makes the level design more methodical and "pure" for the lack of a better word. There's very little frills to the challenges in 9 or 10, but it doesn't really need it since the level design does a lot with very little. It helps make the games effortless to pick up and play yet not lacking in depth or nuance.

On top of this, both have god-tier OSTs that are arguably some of the best in the series as well as great bosses and plenty of challenge. Extra points to 9 for making essentially every power up useful in levels outside of boss deleters. Both are peak MM imo.
