Yes and no. SEGA CD had Mode 7-style sprite scaling but could also do some things SNES couldn't do, like FMV cutscenes with voice acting. 32X could do full-on 3D, perhaps more than the Super FX/2 chip, plus it was technically 32-bit, but ultimately kind of unnecessary in the long run

General consensus is they didn't really need the 32X since it only ever got forty games and was only supported for about a year. SEGA CD gets a lot of hate but unlike the 32X it had a lot more games and was supported for several years.

This is very satisfying to read. Both CD add-ons are very underrated imo, they have become my two favorite systems ever since a few years ago when I started delving into their libraries. The hardware was just mindblowing for its time, offering stuff like digital audio, fully voice acted cutscenes, and full motion video long before the Saturn or PS1 hit the market. SEGA CD in particular feels like an actual continuation of what the Genesis started, and it even had a few very convincing pseudo-3D games like AH-3 Thunderstrike and Starblade. Even if you don't like the games, you can see why they were so impressive for the time period.

Sonic CD
The Terminator
Starblade
Road Rash
Keio Flying Squadron
Lords of Thunder
Android Assault: Revenge of Bari-Arm
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure
After Burner III
Silpheed

I still have yet to play some of the great ones like Popful Mail, the Lunar games, and Snatcher, but it's great for platformers, shmups, and RPG's.

Pretty sure 64-bit is more powerful than 32-bit

>>10384692
This one is debatable. The base console is stronger but the SEGA CD and 32X turn the Genesis into a powerhouse.

MiSTer will probably be the cheaper alternative for a while. I would get one but it's still too pricey for me. If anything this will hopefully make MiSTers cheaper to come by.

Even the CD could've handled a 3D Sonic game, it had the tech for it. Just look at Sonic CD's Special Stages for an example

The shmups are pretty good imo. Snatcher and the Lunar games are also generally well-liked, as well as Cobra: The Space Adventure (adventure game similar to Snatcher), Mickey Mania and Earthworm Jim. I personally also really like The Terminator, Starblade, and Road Rash. There's plenty more than just FMV games. Genesis ports are also not a bad thing, that's the entire point, it's like regular Genesis but better.

Just play it like a regular Sonic game and you'll be fine. Start with basic any% runs and eventually you can go for all of the Time Stones when you want to give it a shot. You don't need to time travel at all in order to get the good ending. SEGA CD is really a fantastic system, if you like Sonic CD then check out Popful Mail or The Terminator as well. Also you are doing the right thing playing the NTSC-U version, don't let anyone tell you otherwise

I still can't get over how great SEGA CD is. I switched back to it after playing Saturn for a while and the experience is just so much better. Tons of solid 2D platformers, shmups, and RPG's to choose from. Less boring arcade ports and weird tech demos, more solid 16-bit games. I could play this thing for hours, Saturn not so much

32X is cool. If only it had supported for a bit longer I'm sure it would've been almost as good as SEGA CD. I still really enjoy Knuckles Chaotix, Virtua Racing Deluxe, Shadow Squadron, Darxide, and After Burner on it.
