>PS2 remake is way better. It also includes the original Saturn game.
I wish. I bought the PS2 version, the "nightopia dreampack". Sadly, it's not as good as the Saturn version, not even the original version included with it. It was coded by some chinese people, not Sonic Team, and it shows. The controls, speed, etc is way different from the Saturn original, for the worse.
At least I got a cool book with it.

Well, there is...
NiGHTS, the mystical and exotic creation of the Sonic Team. Yeah, it's no Sonic, but it has a similar magic. I loved it when I first got it with my Saturn in '96
Die Hard Arcade/Dynamite Deka was a great 3D beat em up and could work as a spiritual successor to SoR.
It's no Shinobi, but Mega Man X4 has the best version on Sega Saturn.
Also: Panzer Dragoon series, Virtua Fighter series, Dead or Alive, all the Capcom and SNK fighters.

Playing Nights when it came out felt like a dream come true.

I bought Panzer Dragoon and unfortunately I don't think it controls very well. It could be the PS2's controller, I dunno.
Same with Nights, and I know that one has actual issues with the controls.
At least Nights came with a nice hardcover book.

>but it also shifted Nintendo to a more family friendly style

Enough with the whole "Nintendo family friendly" shit.
Nintendo 64 was, if anything, the moment Nintendo decided to cater to the, lets say "dudebro" audience, with flagship games like Goldeneye (where you can shoot enemies on their limbs, head, etc), wrestling games and racing games.

>but Mario is kiddy!

So is Crash, Sonic, Alex Kidd and every other mascot character.

The real "family oriented" or "kiddy" games are the edutainment games. And what you know, Sega actually released more of those than Nintendo (look up Sega Pico).

The whole "Nintendo is for kids" is a kind of stigma that comes from way before the Nintendo 64, it's from when Mortal Kombat 1 didn't have blood on SNES, probably more due to Nintendo trying to avoid lawsuits rather than caring about being family friendly, but whatever.
