90s CG prerendered stills were more than just high res textures, they also had extremely high poly environments and models and lots of gloss. Until someone painstakingly recreates every level in the game by hand to have as much detail as possible, it will still fall short.

Honestly the Mario SGI model looks great (not sure why he's so duckfooted though) but it's probably the most impressive part of the whole project. Anytime they go off-model it starts to look bad. The bob-ombs look off. Wario's arms look like sausages. The owl, chomp and Princess look straight up horrible and the whole thing is missing environmental texture effects and a lighting system to mimic the original workstation renders. Unless they plan to keep working on this for literally years or port it to a modern engine I don't think it will amount to much more than a novelty for zoomers and YouTubers

I know I'm really late to this one. I never owned an N64 growing up. For some reason, I've never really gone back through its library, preferring the PSX and Saturn.

Well, I finally finished Super Mario 64. I'm probably reiterating decades of praise, but this is really one of the most remarkable games I've ever played. Mario still controls beautifully. The amount of care and thought put into each of the courses is astonishing. The game is a triumph of design and imagination.

It's probably easy to criticize parts of this game just because they were so new at the time, but I went into this game without any pretenses. The camera isn't perfect, and not every course is flawless (Dire Dire Docks is a bit of a stinker), but those things seem like such nitpicking considering that this game came out in 1996.

Since it's so easy to talk about how influential/innovative/etc. this game is, what is some weird shit that most people wouldn't know about the game?
