I played Dynamite Headdy and Mischief Makers without even suspecting they were from the same devs. I also thought they were really popular, as I had several other friends with Dynamite Headdy, Mischief Makers, and even Earthbound and Super Mario RPG.

Color me surprised when I found out everyone and their grandma DIDN'T play them, copies of Earthbound go for over $100, and I was one of the few people (along with most of my friends) who instantly recognized Ness in the original Super Smash Bros. It's just kind of surreal.

Anyway, I was also a dumb kid in that I had no respect for shmups and thought they were mindless clones where you keep feeding quarters and mashing a button. I got a Dreamcast after playing at a friends. His older brother's friend brought the Dreamcast over along with a binder full of CD-Rs. The exact time frame, I don't remember, but I don't think Crazy Taxi 2 was a thing yet, the Japanese preview of Sonic Adventure 2 hadn't been revealed yet, Dreamcast was alive and in stores with VMUs and controllers stocking the shelves, and Ikaruga definitely wasn't on Gamecube yet.

So, we played a lot of Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, Chu Chu Rocket. I got a Dreamcast for Christmas along with accessories, Sonic Adventure, and it came with a web browser and Sega Swirl. I looked into downloading games, discovered Ikaruga, and fell in love. And in love with arcade games, score attack, 1CC, and Treasure. Ikaruga isn't my favorite shmup these days, but it was a catalyst that got me into Radiant Silvergun, Guardian Heroes, and 1CCing most of Capcom Classics Collection and Taito Legends 1 and 2 on PS2. I now get to laugh at people when they call the GnG series impossible. Especially since I also played Arcade Bionic Commando and never was able to 1CC that one.

Eventually, I built an arcade stick, used it for years, but I was never able to make anything better than my "prototype" case so I replaced it with a Street Fighter IV stick.
