Didn’t Shigeru Miyamoto steal this game’s ideas, artworks, level physics and gameplay mechanics in order to make Mario 64? If I remember well, before Croc was a thing the developers first pitched an idea to Nintendo about making the first 3D Yoshi game and they had rendered Yoshi in 3D, made a few levels. Miyamoto looked at everything and liked the “upbeat and creative atmosphere” they had elaborated, as well as potential gameplay mechanics and 3D worlds… but he told them he had to renounce the offer. Then he took all the beta details of the “scrapped game” in secret, dismissed Yoshi and replaced him by Mario, and used it to create the Mario 64 we all know today. Croc devs got wind of it and there was a legal dispute, but in the end what can you do against Miyamoto or Nintendo… the latter eventually apologized, maintained his idea for the game with Mario in it, and the indie devs got back to developing their game… only they changed the name for “Croc”, went to Sony and changed the majority of elements of the game.

The thing is… in Mario 64, if you talk to the Yoshi at the top of the Castle after collecting 120 stars, the Yoshi is strange. It is deformed, elongated and lacks a white stripe around the red bump on its back, unlike Yoshi’s design in all other iterations of Mario. It is similar to the pitch the Croc developers first made. He talks to you, unlike in all other iterations of the game, then says some weird stuff and just… jumps down below to his “suicide”, never to be seen again. At least that’s what kids in my block said back then lol, you know with kid theories that circulated around cult games.

I now notice it must be some kind of in-joke from the M64 dev’s team. They must have been satisfied with their end result for the first 3D Mario game, and sensing potential success, they make that Yoshi/Croc just kill himself as some sort of dark humour surrounding the beef between Croc’s creators and Miyamoto.
