Seems like a matter of both internal and external security. The audio logs in DOOM 3 (as well as the start of the game itself) seems to indicate that a lot of the marines' duty is finding employees who get lost (or get lost'd by betruger and co..) or go berserk and need to be restrained. There's also always a possibility of sabotage / espionage / terrorism.

I mean the UAC does develop weapons for some reason, so whatever conflicts / geopolitical rivals there are, could end up targeting the facility.

Also, just wanna say that DOOM 3's Mars facility feels really cozy. Very lived-in feel. Shame how the intro is over too quick, I honestly wish you could explore more of the facility before it all goes to shit kind of like Half Life's and Blue Shift's beginning sections.

DOOM 3 is comfy, it looks great even today. For the past... I don't know how many years before falling asleep I have been developing an extended Doom universe in my head, imagining UAC marines in adventures and typical soldier life and talking to their platoon mates, combining UAC Marine stuff with Aliens Colonial Marines and my own experience/spoiler] and DOOM 3's base is fodder for my fantasies. I love how the DOOM 3 base is full of those video disks and emails detailing life on the base, from the mundane to the strange things that have been going on and I can just imagine working in the base when things are going well, being like a Security Marine doing patrols or a forklift operator in the UAC warehouse etc..

That said, keeping to the actual game, I think Doom 3 fails in the gunplay. It looks gorgeous but the feedback in gunplay is dog shit. The weapons look weird, oddly rounded-out toys and the enemies outside of the standard zombies don't even flinch when shot. When you shoot a Z-Sec guy with a shotgun almost point blank and he does not even flinch, that is just.. Bad.

A game like FEAR, you feel an insane power from the weapons even when you don't kill something, they react and have proper pain animations.

So, DOOM3, great atmosphere and it's good like a weird faux-horror fps, but the gunplay just lacks proper feedback and the guns are really ugly.
