I'm not saying it's not understandable, just that the guy is also not wrong in what he says.

I don't generally care for this genre but had loads of fun with Gaiares.

I don't love a lot of shmups but Gaiares was good fun.

He means once you know what to do it's relatively easy because what the player has to do is simple. Compared to some shmups for example where even when you know what you're supposed to do, pulling it off can still be a challenge.

I kinda feel this way about Gaiares. It has some tough bosses and bits you have to memorize but mostly it's getting the right weapons for the right sections and figuring that out is the fun part.

Is Gaiares considered to be any good?

>Was Gaiares more fun due to being able to experiment with different weapons each time?

Yeah. Different runs I'd try going for different weapon types and that made it interesting. Also I was working a night security job so had a lot of free time and the novelty of a portable genesis. Also a good friend who had always been into shooters was away on a Mormon mission. So I made it part of mine to try and get into some of these kinds of games and have something for us to write back and forth about.

I tried a few on Genesis, Gaiares stuck partly cause of the upgrades but also the wackiness was cool

How so though? A quite small percentage of games really interest me, so when I find one I really do like I tend to play it a lot and end up getting good at it. That's autism?

Good to know my memory is working at least. It's not a genre I play a lot and haven't touched an R-Type in many years I just remember them looking neat at first and then being so boring I never end up going back after the first couple plays.

Me and Gaiares found each other though so it's all good.

Only played 1, 2, 3 (SNES) and 5. Gradius 5 is the only one I didn't find boring. Maybe it's just that it was visually impressive but the asteroid field was quite cool and fighting a giant space prostate was neat.

Why only top down? Musha and Truxton won't cost you an arm and a leg but they're both a little dull in my opinion. In my opinion Gaiares blows them both out of the water and is also still not super popular so it shouldn't be mega expensive. It's horizontal though and I don't know why you're specifically asking for verts.

Probably close to a quarter of every retro game takes place in space dude, that's a pretty huge list you're going to end up with.

Thunder Force 4 is super popular around here for some reason. What do you like so much about it? It was a fun game, but no contender to Gaiares in my opinion.

It sounds like you're almost ready to tackle Gaiares. It's one of the hardest shmups you're ever going to encounter, but once you can beat it you will feel absolutely fantastic. It's also got a balls to the wall kick ass soundtrack.

My favorite of the retro era is Gaiares. It's got it all. A really cool upgrade system, amazing music and really fun cool looking bosses.

Yeah, Truxton is quite good. I think Gaiares is by far the best shmup on the Genesis though. Really cool stages with great bosses that get hard as fuck, incredible music and most importantly a fuck off awesome weapon upgrade system.
