Thanks to everyone for sharing about your gaming Dads. Sorry to all the anons who had shit dads (lower case d). Not to sound cold but it makes me more grateful for mine. Be good Dads, anons. And always be better than your kid at the game you play so as to not break illusions.

I loved this game because I played it when I was young and had fun, and also because I played it again as an adult and had fun. If that means I have shit taste, that's a blessing from God bc I can just enjoy things without filtering my personality through other peoples opinions to make sure I am "right".

Checking consensus to make sure you are being right and safe is peak beta behavior. Trained so thoroughly to comply with consensus as a mode of social survival that you do it for comfort recreationally in private... it actually makes me very sad.

So what's the /vr/dict? Is talking about one's feels gay or not? I need to know now that I spent $1000 on a good CRT what's the next big thing in retro gaming.

I feel like if Duke would pass the torch to anyone, it'd be Shelly "Bombshell" Harrison while Duke assumes a role similar to General Graves does to Duke. But again, that's not Duke's character.

With the "boomer shooter" trend on the rise, is there any chance The Dukester could come back in an actual official game?
I know Ion Fury's already kinda usurping Duke's throne in some ways, but in some ways Duke's the Duke and the only Duke that can really *be' the Duke.
So short of DNF 2001 Restoration Project, does anyone still believe in The King coming back?

Not really, I haven't really engaged with the actual DOOM community on the internet that much.
This is despite playing DOOM literally since the 1990s and early 2000s, /vr/ is pretty much the first place where I really get to the nitty gritty of DOOM level design discussion etc (aside from chats with a friend of mine etc) .

I know it's not an "original take" since I've seen some discussion on the threads that hints at it but it just really sinks in now that I am revisiting DOOM 2 and the classic shooters in general like Duke 3d, Shadow Warrior, Blood etc and some competent throwback shooters like Ion Fury etc.

It's got alright shooting but if it's shooting you want then Ion Fury kinda does it better than Duke / SW / Blood did combined on top of having stellar level design. Which is cool and I'm really stoked for Ion Fury expansion.

Which brings me to my next point honestly : if Duke's character / style isn't important then what'd be the reason to have to hassle with the Duke i.p when you can have similar or better gameplay and make a new i.p that doesn't have the bad duke games' stink on them?

If we're being realistic, having sexiness in games isn't really an issue, it's probably more the brand damage caused by DNF that really tarnished the i.p.
