if you're serious about homebrewing it's always Assembler and C. you really need that optimization for older hardware. in general optimization as concept is lost art as modern pajeet web shitters dont understand it. try asking jeets what LoD or tessellation is and you'll know what i mean

and in fact. pokemon gold was supposed to be last pokemon, which is why it had everything in it, including first game. that's where series were supposed to end according to creator, and series went to shit after it. it's really not worth playing anything besides gold/silver and if that's not enough, there are many romhacks that improve original game too
