I, for one, have certain criteria for what counts as "retro".
The sixth generation of consoles was probably the last era of conceptual evolution of video games.
The successive generations simply improved/build-upon the assets left by the old ones without inventing new methods of expression.
While there are games that push the boundaries of their mechanics, few have really turned any of these innovations into a trend.
Mario Odyssey is an expansion of the Space Station Silicon Valley concepts.
Dark Souls is simply a more complex version of Ocarina of Time.
And while the new so-called "editions" more often than not, improve on the ideas of their predecessors, they haven't really invented anything new.
To me, "retro" is something that defines a period, and I believe we're still not out of the "7th generation era," even though technically the hardware has changed more than once.
