I know, it hurts. It's one of my favourite JRPGs ever and the remake doesn't compare.

Anyway, the game works decently using Retroarch's AI translation tool, coupled with the FAQ on gamefaqs for item names.

I like when the gameplay is well balanced to the point that you have to watch for your every move in combat, and that random encounters wear you down little by little, forcing the player to manage his ressources properly, to remember enemies, their behaviour and HP to prioritize targets and use the right move at the right time. If you've never had to backtrack to town in the middle of a dungeon to heal, then the gameplay is probably not interesting.
Build customization is a plus but not mandatory.

Of course you also have to add soulful graphics and musics on top of that and an interesting, engaging world.

People who complain JRPGs have no challenge by definition probably only played Final Fantasy. Even just the Dragon Quest series is infinitely more interesting gameplay wise than the FF because at least it managed to keep that gameplay spirit going up to DQ8 on PS2; while in the case of FF, only 1/2/3 have that interesting gameplay.

I liked Metal Max 2 Reloaded but it's so inferior to the original. And Ted Broiler is a great example of that. They added all those silly animations with exaggerated movements which make all the enemies look dumb and make it look like this is a game for 8 years olds. I consider the intro of this game one of the best villain intro I've seen in a JRPG or video game ever, but in Reloaded it just looks dumb.

You can always tell when someone doesn't have Metal Max on his list, it's because he hasn't played them.

Ted Broiler has the best villain intro ever in an RPG. Perhaps only second to Sephiroth in FF7.

BIG SPOILERS ahead (it's only the start of the game but it's better experienced yourself)

>game starts
>a party of five is introduced
>there is you, your adpotive mom, and 3 other guys
>their job: defend this little village from bad guys
>mom teaches you that if things get rough, there is no shame in running away to live another day
>bad guys come in
>the party gets rid of them easily one fight after the other, you don't have control yet in battle
>suddenly Ted Broiler arrives
>nobody even makes a scratch at him in battle, 1 dmg values at best
>he kills (not just KOs) everyone but you and your mom
>new fight, you and your mom are all that's left against this giant
>First time you have control in battle
>nothing you do even damages him
>Ted Broilers kills your mom
>attempt to run away like mom taught you
>Ted Broilers catches up with you
>leaves you for dead
>proceeds to burn the village down and kidnap all the people he can find

At that point some villagers come out of hiding, realize you're still clinging to life despite having been burnt. They take care of you and after many days you're back on your feet, the game starts for real. You're the only left from the original 5. The goal of the game? Get revenge on this literal motherfucker. First stop: your mother's grave.
