I eventually got my own copy later on, but I rented this one more than any other game.

Super Butoden 2 (or La legende Saien, as it was known in Europe) is my absolute favorite. Perfected the split-screen system from the first Butoden game, added a meaty single-player story mode, and has a very interesting cast of characters. Also as another anon said in another thread, it's the only DBZ game that had the balls to not have Goku as a default character, instead it's a secret unlockable character (and only in VS mode, not story mode).
Super Butoden 3 is also recommended and worth playing if you enjoyed Butoden 2, but it's only a VS game for multiplayer and nothing else, it actually lacks a single player mode. Despite this, the game still controls nice and in some ways surpasses Butoden 2.
Buyu Retsuden on Mega Drive is also worth playing if you liked Butoden 2 and 3. Not as polished, but has a great roster.
All 3 of these games allow you to unlock a turbo mode for faster gameplay which I do recommend, as the default speed is quite slow.
Don't try to play it like a traditional fighting game, a lot of the gameplay dynamics of these games is about taking proper distance with your opponent and using the dash function. Be smart while managing your energy-ha attacks, and mix them with close combat attacks when there's an opening. There's a lot of strategy involved in these games that can't be found in any other fighting game, simply because of the unique split screen mechanic, the dash function, and the way the projectiles are limited to your Ki bar.
They're games that actually are more enjoyable when you play against other humans though, as all fighting games. If you don't have IRL friends who are interested in playing old DBZ games, then your only chance is trying to play online, but be aware japanese and latin american players will likely mop the floor with you.
As for which ones to avoid, avoid Ultimate Battle 22 and Shin Butoden. They are incredibly bad games. Play DBZ Legends on Saturn/PS1 instead.

What country are you from? Dragon Ball is way too famous to be considered just an otaku thing.
